The standout feature on the U.S. physical release of Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is “Inside the Lens: The Raw Cut.” It is a full-length, split-screen comparison between the finished film and footage before its visual effects were completed, with optional commentary from director Wes Ball, editor Dan Zimmerman, and visual-effects supervisor Erik Winquist.
Despite the 4K UHD branding, the Raw Cut is presented on the included Blu-ray rather than as a second fully finished 4K version of the movie. That makes the physical 4K package especially appealing to visual-effects fans—but digital buyers should not assume they receive the same bonus presentation.

What “Inside the Lens: The Raw Cut” actually is
The Raw Cut is best understood as a production-effects comparison presentation, not a conventional alternate cut with a different story or radically revised edit.

It runs through the film while showing the completed theatrical imagery alongside unfinished-effects material. Depending on the sequence, viewers can see production footage, incomplete digital work, storyboards, or imagery before environments, creatures, and digital ape performances have received their final visual polish. The optional commentary adds context from Ball, Zimmerman, and Winquist.

That distinction matters. This is not simply another polished version of Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. It is a behind-the-scenes look at how the finished movie was assembled from performances, editorial decisions, sound, practical production work, and visual effects.
Why the feature is unusually valuable
Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes depends heavily on digital characters and environments. The Raw Cut makes that process easier to appreciate by exposing the stages normally hidden behind the finished image.
- Motion-capture performances: Viewers can compare the underlying actor work with the completed digital ape faces and bodies.
- Unfinished environments: Digital set extensions and locations may appear incomplete or absent, revealing how much of the world was built after principal photography.
- Temporary visual effects: Creatures, action elements, and other effects can appear rough, missing, or represented by temporary material.
- Performance and staging: The comparison shows how emotional scenes work before final compositing and visual polish are added.
- Editorial construction: The relationship between timing, sound design, performances, and the final effects becomes more apparent.
Not every shot should be expected to appear in exactly the same unfinished state. The appeal is the contrast across the presentation: it shows how a scene develops rather than offering a uniformly rough version of the entire film.

The trade-off is that the unfinished imagery can be visually distracting. It may also spoil some of the mechanics behind major sequences for viewers who prefer to preserve the illusion of the finished effects.

The announced U.S. physical package includes these principal extras:
- “Inside the Forbidden Zone: Making Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” — a making-of documentary featuring Wes Ball, cast members, and crew.
- 14 deleted and extended scenes — with optional commentary by Ball.
- “Inside the Lens: The Raw Cut” — the full-length finished-versus-unfinished-effects comparison.
Bonus availability can vary by country, retailer, and special edition, so buyers should check the specific product listing rather than assume every release has identical contents.

Retail listings sometimes use “4K Blu-ray” as shorthand for a 4K UHD disc bundled with a Blu-ray. Read the disc breakdown carefully. The phrase “4K UHD release” does not mean that every extra—including the Raw Cut—is presented in 4K.
Release dates and film context
In the U.S., the film became available to buy or rent digitally on July 9, 2024, followed by the physical release on August 27, 2024. The film is directed by Wes Ball and stars Owen Teague, Freya Allan, Kevin Durand, Peter Macon, and William H. Macy.
Set generations after Caesar’s reign, the story follows Noa and Mae in a post-human world dominated by apes. The runtime is approximately 146 minutes, and U.S. retailer listings identify it as PG-13.

Choose the physical 4K UHD/Blu-ray package if you want:
- The Raw Cut and the other major bonus features.
- A permanent disc copy rather than access tied to a digital platform.
- 4K playback on a compatible player and HDR-capable display.
- The included Blu-ray for use with a second or non-4K player.
- Collectible packaging or a physical addition to your Planet of the Apes library.
Choose digital if you mainly want:
- The finished film without physical media.
- Immediate access on a supported device.
- A low-cost rental for a one-time viewing.
Digital prices and availability change by platform, account, and territory. Prime Video’s listing has shown a UHD rental at $3.99 and a UHD purchase at $19.99, but those prices are not permanent. More importantly, a digital UHD purchase should not be treated as equivalent to the physical package unless the listing specifically confirms the bonus content.

Standard 4K or SteelBook?
The standard 4K edition is generally the sensible choice when the priority is the film and its bonus disc. A SteelBook makes more sense for franchise collectors who value limited packaging and have confirmed that the edition contains the same discs and extras.
Do not assume a SteelBook automatically adds content. Its premium may primarily pay for the packaging, scarcity, or presentation rather than additional features.
Buying checks that can prevent disappointment
- Confirm the disc contents: Make sure the listing includes both 4K UHD and Blu-ray discs if you want the Raw Cut.
- Check the edition and region: Imported releases can differ in region compatibility, audio, subtitles, packaging, and bonus features.
- Be cautious with used copies: The discs may remain intact, but an included digital code could be missing, expired, or already redeemed.
- Check digital parity: Look for an explicit extras list instead of assuming a digital purchase mirrors the physical release.
- Verify marketplace sellers: Stock, condition, and fulfillment can change on retailer marketplace listings.
The release was announced in 4K UHD, Blu-ray, DVD, and a limited SteelBook edition. A 10-film Planet of the Apes digital bundle was also announced for participating digital retailers, but that bundle is aimed at franchise viewing and does not replace the physical bonus-disc experience.
Current retailer pages include Best Buy, Walmart, and Target. Prices and availability are dynamic.
Who should buy it?
The physical 4K release is the strongest choice for home-theater owners, physical-media collectors, Planet of the Apes fans, and anyone interested in how modern visual-effects films are made. The Raw Cut offers something a standard commentary track or short promotional feature usually cannot: a direct, scene-by-scene contrast between production material and the finished image.
If you only want to watch the completed movie once, a digital rental is the simpler and cheaper option. If you want the movie plus the release’s most distinctive extra, choose a physical edition whose included Blu-ray explicitly lists “Inside the Lens: The Raw Cut.”
