There is no official iPhone SE 4. Apple introduced the expected SE successor as the iPhone 16e on February 19, 2025, and the iPhone 17e replaced it as Apple’s affordable iPhone in March 2026. The name change came with a larger, more modern phone—and a much higher starting price than the last iPhone SE.
From “iPhone SE 4” rumor to iPhone 16e
Before its release, “iPhone SE 4” was widely used as a shorthand for the next phone in Apple’s entry-level SE line. Apple did not use that name. It announced the iPhone 16e as a new member of the iPhone 16 family, positioning it as the more affordable option in that lineup. Apple’s announcement is the definitive source for the product’s official name and positioning.
So it is reasonable to call the 16e the successor to the third-generation iPhone SE, but not an iPhone SE 4: that was a rumor label, not the name of a released Apple product. Search results may still use “SE 4” in old headlines or URLs; that does not make it the official name.
Release timeline—and what is current now
- February 19, 2025: Apple announced iPhone 16e.
- February 21, 2025: Preorders opened.
- February 28, 2025: iPhone 16e became available.
- March 2, 2026: Apple announced iPhone 17e.
- March 11, 2026: iPhone 17e became available, replacing the 16e as Apple’s current affordable model.
Apple’s availability update for iPhone 16e and iPhone 17e announcement confirm those launch milestones. As of August 2026, the 17e—not an SE-branded phone—is the current model in this part of Apple’s range.

What changed from the iPhone SE 3?
The 16e changed the basic proposition, not just the label. The 2022 iPhone SE had a compact 4.7-inch LCD, a Home button with Touch ID, and a Lightning connector. The 16e moved to a 6.1-inch OLED screen, Face ID, USB-C, a newer chip and a higher-resolution main camera. The comparison below uses the original U.S. starting prices, not current used-market prices.

A more capable phone, but no longer an SE-priced one
The original U.S. starting price rose by $170, from $429 for the 64GB SE 3 to $599 for the 128GB 16e. That comparison is between launch prices; it does not say what either model costs today from another retailer or on the used market. The 16e was still Apple’s lowest-priced new iPhone at launch, but $599 is not a low-cost phone price in the broader smartphone market.

Apple did not publicly say that it changed the name to justify the price, improve resale value or abandon the SE brand for a particular business reason. What is verifiable is that the company put the 16e in the iPhone 16 family. One plausible interpretation is that the name better signaled its shared platform generation and separated it from the older SE design; that is analysis, not an announced Apple rationale.
What the change means for different buyers
- If you want a small phone: The 16e is not a compact SE replacement. Its 6.1-inch display and all-screen shape are a substantial change from the 4.7-inch SE 3. Look for a suitable older or refurbished model if size is the priority, and check the seller’s warranty and battery policy.
- If you need Touch ID or a Home button: Neither the 16e nor 17e restores those features. Both use Face ID and gesture navigation.
- If your top priority is spending as little as possible: The 16e’s $599 launch price was substantially higher than the SE 3’s. Used or refurbished older iPhones can cost less, but condition, battery health, support life and warranty vary.
- If you want a modern entry-level iPhone: The 16e brought current-generation design and Apple Intelligence compatibility to Apple’s least expensive new model at the time. Availability of Apple Intelligence features depends on supported software, languages and regions.
- If you want more camera flexibility or premium extras: Compare the current 17e with regular iPhone models at their live prices. A standard model may be a better fit if you value an ultrawide camera, additional camera options, or other features beyond the 17e’s single rear-camera system.
Where the iPhone 17e fits
The iPhone 17e keeps the $599 U.S. starting price but starts with 256GB, double the 16e’s 128GB base storage. It adds an A19 chip, Apple’s C1X modem, MagSafe, Ceramic Shield 2 and a 48MP Fusion camera; it is available in black, white and soft pink. Apple’s U.S. store lists 256GB at $599 and 512GB at $799. Prices, configurations and SIM support differ by country; for example, the U.S. model is eSIM-only, a detail that should not be generalized to every market. The 17e supports MagSafe, while the 16e was not positioned as a MagSafe phone. If buying accessories, check compatibility with the specific model: a generic wireless charger is not the same as magnetic MagSafe attachment.
A quick buying decision
- Want Apple’s least expensive new iPhone? Start with the 17e, then compare its live price against standard iPhones and carrier offers. Do not assume it is automatically the best value if a higher-tier model is discounted.
- Need to stay below $599 or want a compact phone? Consider a reputable used or refurbished iPhone, including older SE models, but verify battery condition, warranty, return terms and network compatibility.
- Need MagSafe, extra camera flexibility or premium display features? Compare the 17e with regular iPhone models before deciding; those extras can make the price difference worthwhile, depending on current offers.
- Considering a carrier promotion or trade-in? Check the full installment and plan terms, required time on the carrier, eligible trade-in condition and total cost. Apple Trade In values vary by model, condition, location and date; compare with a private sale if appropriate.
For U.S. buyers, the practical headline is simple: the expected SE 4 became a larger, more capable iPhone at a markedly higher price, and its successor now offers more base storage and MagSafe for the same starting price. The shift is a good fit for shoppers who want a modern entry iPhone, but not necessarily for those whose reason for buying an SE was its small size, Touch ID or low price.
