The “iPhone 17 Air” leak was broadly right about the phone’s most striking change: Apple’s ultra-thin model arrived with a wide horizontal camera plateau across its upper back. But “central camera placement” is misleading if it means the rear lens moved to the middle. On the shipping iPhone Air, the rear camera remains at the upper left of that plateau; it is the front camera that sits centered at the top of the display.
How the camera-bar leak developed
The first widely reported clue appeared on January 21, 2025, when Weibo leaker Majin Bu shared an alleged shell or component image showing a broad horizontal rear-camera housing. At the time, it was an unverified leak—not proof of a production design or of the hardware inside it. MacRumors’ report on the alleged shell captured the early suggestion that Apple might be moving away from its familiar square camera bump.
Later evidence repeated the same basic shape. CAD images reported on February 28 showed an elongated module with a single lens toward the left and room for other components. On March 19, a third-party case appeared with a large cutout for a camera bar. That repetition made the broad design more plausible, but CAD renders and accessory molds are not official confirmation: they can reflect early specifications that change before launch. Apple settled the question on September 9, 2025, announcing the device as iPhone Air, not iPhone 17 Air. The rear plateau in the finished phone confirms the leak’s defining silhouette. That does not mean every leaked image or every detail was authentic; the accurate conclusion is that the reports anticipated the design’s broad direction. Apple’s announcement shows the final product and name.

What “central camera placement” gets wrong
There are three different things a headline can mean by camera placement:
- The rear lens: Apple’s iPhone Air support guide identifies it at the upper left of the back, not in the center of the rear panel.
- The rear housing: The plateau stretches horizontally across much of the upper back, so the camera assembly occupies a more visually central band than a small corner bump would.
- The front camera: This is centered at the top of the display. Apple pairs it with an 18MP Center Stage front-camera system, which can adjust framing for selfies and video calls. Apple’s product announcement describes the system.
So the leak correctly pointed toward an unusually wide rear camera area, and the final phone really does have a centered front camera. But the rear lens itself was not moved to the middle of the back.

What Apple shipped
Apple’s final product is a 5.64 mm-thick, 165-gram titanium phone with a 6.5-inch display. It has a single 48MP Fusion Main rear camera, which offers an optical-quality 2x Telephoto option, and an 18MP Center Stage front camera. It supports 4K Dolby Vision video and Dual Capture, which records with the front and rear cameras at the same time. Apple lists 256GB, 512GB and 1TB storage options. The 5.64 mm figure describes the phone’s body depth, not a uniform thickness that includes every raised surface. The plateau protrudes, as camera housings do. Early reporting discussed a roughly 5.5 mm body alongside estimates for a thicker camera area; those estimates were not the final official specification. The clearest comparison is to use Apple’s body-depth figure while recognizing that the raised plateau remains part of the physical design. Early thickness reporting illustrates why body and camera-area measurements should not be conflated.

Why use a wide plateau?
Apple says it reworked the internal design to make room for the battery and put multiple technologies in the raised plateau, including the Fusion camera, flash, chip and other components. The plateau is therefore more than a decorative camera strip: it is part of how the company packaged the phone’s internal hardware around an exceptionally thin body. Apple’s iPhone Air page sets out that design rationale.
A further packaging explanation is reasonable, but should be treated as analysis rather than a separately confirmed engineering specification: a large camera sensor needs depth, and a 5.64 mm body leaves little room to place deep components beneath the full rear surface. A raised, wider area gives Apple a place to accommodate hardware without making the whole chassis as thick as that local bump. The shape also spreads the visual and physical footprint across the top instead of concentrating it in a compact square.

The design was often compared with Google Pixel phones because both use a horizontal rear bar. That is a useful visual comparison, not evidence that Apple copied a particular Pixel implementation. Apple calls its structure a plateau and describes its own component layout.

The camera trade-off matters more than the bar’s shape
The Air’s single rear camera can cover ordinary main-camera shooting and provide 2x optical-quality framing, but it does not add another physical rear lens. In particular, it lacks the dedicated 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide camera found on iPhone 17. That distinction matters for genuinely wide landscape, room and group shots, and for macro photography supported by the iPhone 17’s ultra-wide system. Apple identifies the extra ultra-wide camera as a feature of iPhone 17 on its comparison and product information.

For someone who mostly uses the main camera and occasionally wants a tighter 2x view, the Air’s setup may be sufficient. Someone who often needs to fit a whole room into a photo, shoot a broad landscape from a fixed position, or take close-up macro images will have a practical reason to choose iPhone 17 or a Pro model instead. The wide plateau itself should not be mistaken for a multi-camera system: the Air has one rear camera.

Does the design make sense for buyers?
Choose iPhone Air if low weight and a very thin body are the priorities, you want a large 6.5-inch display, and one capable main rear camera with 2x framing covers your photography. Its centered 18MP front camera and Center Stage features may also appeal to people who take frequent selfies or make video calls.
Choose iPhone 17 if you would rather have the dedicated ultra-wide rear camera and macro capability, or if price matters more than the Air’s titanium, ultra-thin construction. For buyers seeking the fullest rear-camera system and willing to pay more, iPhone 17 Pro is the more relevant comparison.

The real story behind the leak
The leak’s lasting significance is that it anticipated the iPhone Air’s defining silhouette and a substantial change to Apple’s camera-housing design. Its “central camera” framing needs correction: the rear lens stayed on the upper-left side, while the front camera is centered. More importantly, the plateau reflects the design challenge Apple chose to take on—fitting camera and other components around an unusually thin phone—alongside a clear camera compromise, the absence of a dedicated ultra-wide rear lens.
