Released in September 2014, iOS 8 changed less about the iPhone’s appearance than about what apps could do inside it. Third-party keyboards, widgets and sharing extensions gave developers more ways to work with the system, while Apple expanded Messages, Photos and cross-device features. The trade-off was uneven feature support across older devices and, in Ars Technica’s 2014 testing, less fluid animation on A5 hardware.

What changed from iOS 7 to iOS 8?

iOS 7 had brought a conspicuous visual redesign; iOS 8 kept that recognizable interface and made a more consequential functional shift. Apple announced the software on September 9, 2014, and began offering it as a free update on September 17 for listed iPhone, iPad and iPod touch models.

Area iOS 7 emphasis iOS 8 change
Core experience Major visual overhaul Incremental visible changes, with more system capabilities opened to apps
Third-party apps More limited system integration Extensions, including widgets, custom keyboards, sharing options and actions in supported contexts
Apple services Earlier versions of Messages, Photos and device continuity Expanded messaging and photo tools, Family Sharing, Health, iCloud Drive and Mac/iOS continuity features
Launch readiness Not applicable to this release comparison Some announced capabilities, including SMS forwarding and iCloud Photo Library, were not complete in finished form at initial release

Ars Technica’s Andrew Cunningham summed up the distinction in his September 17, 2014 review: “iOS 7 was transformative on an aesthetic level; iOS 8 is transformative on a functional level.” The change was substantial for developers, but it did not mean every app could use every new capability: Apple provided the frameworks and controlled the system, while developers had to build support into their apps.

What did iOS 8 change for third-party apps?

Extensibility was the release’s defining platform change. Apple said iOS 8 included more than 4,000 new APIs. That was an Apple-reported 2014 figure, not a measure of how many new features every user would see immediately. The practical result was that supported third-party apps could participate in more places across iOS.

#1 Best Overall
Apple iPhone 14, 128GB, Midnight - Unlocked (Renewed)
  • This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
  • Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
  • The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
  • Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
  • Widgets: Apps could provide widgets in Notification Center.
  • Custom keyboards: Users could install keyboards from other developers, rather than being limited to Apple’s keyboard.
  • Sharing and actions: Developers could add options to the share sheet and actions in supported contexts.
  • Photo editing: PhotoKit let developers expose editing tools within the Photos workflow.
  • Health data exchange: HealthKit provided a permission-based framework for compatible apps and devices to exchange selected information.

These were openings in a controlled platform, not a wholesale removal of Apple’s boundaries. Availability depended on the app, the context and the device. Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice president of Software Engineering, described the developer focus in the company’s September 9 announcement: “iOS 8 also creates an extraordinary environment for developers, providing them the ability to create amazing new apps like never before.”

Which iPhones and iPads supported iOS 8?

Apple’s September 2014 announcement said the free update was for listed iPhone, iPad and iPod touch devices. The release-era device list is not reproduced in the evidence available for this review, so this article does not provide a model-by-model compatibility roster. More importantly, being eligible to install iOS 8 did not guarantee access to every feature: hardware and device age affected functions such as Health features, AirDrop, Handoff and graphics capabilities.

For owners of older supported hardware, installation eligibility and practical experience were separate questions. Ars Technica reported that newer A6- and A7-class devices generally ran well in its 2014 review, while A5 devices showed visibly less fluid animations. Its findings describe testing at the time, not a universal result for every device or a claim about present-day usability.

Did iOS 8 slow down the iPhone 4S?

The iPhone 4S uses A5-class hardware, and Ars Technica’s 2014 review reported visibly less fluid animations on A5 devices under iOS 8 than on newer A6/A7 devices. That supports a qualified answer: the 4S could feel less smooth, particularly in animation, but the finding should not be expanded into a claim that every task was slow or that all users experienced the same degree of slowdown. Ars also found same-device battery comparisons broadly similar to iOS 7 in its testing; that is a limited 2014 comparison, not a guarantee for an individual handset.

How did the built-in apps and Apple services improve?

Messages

Messages gained ways to send voice recordings, photos and videos from conversations. Users could manage group conversations and share their location for a chosen period. Apple also described SMS/MMS relay as part of the iOS-and-Mac experience, but Ars noted that SMS forwarding was not complete in finished form at the initial iOS 8 release.

Photos

The built-in editor added automatic straightening and controls for light and color, alongside the PhotoKit integration that let compatible developers offer editing tools within Photos. iCloud Photo Library was part of Apple’s broader Photos plan, but Ars reported it was not complete at initial release; Apple described later availability plans.

Continuity with Mac

Handoff and related Continuity features were designed to connect iOS devices with Macs running OS X Yosemite. Apple also announced Mac calling alongside SMS/MMS relay. These features depended on compatible hardware and software, and some capabilities were scheduled for later availability rather than being ready in finished form on iOS 8’s first release day.

Family Sharing

Family Sharing let up to six family members use separate Apple IDs while sharing eligible purchases, calendars and family photos. Parents could use Ask to Buy controls for children’s purchases. The shared-purchase feature applied to eligible content, not automatically to every item or service.

Health and Home

Health gathered selected data from apps and devices, while HealthKit provided a framework for permission-based exchange. HomeKit aimed to coordinate supported home accessories. These were ecosystem frameworks and ambitions, not evidence that every accessory, app or device already worked together at launch.

What were the main trade-offs?

  • More useful integration, but developer-dependent: Extensions made iOS more flexible, yet a feature appeared only when an app implemented it and supported the relevant context.
  • Feature variation by hardware: A device could support iOS 8 without supporting every hardware-dependent capability.
  • Older hardware could feel less fluid: Ars’s review found animation responsiveness weaker on A5 devices than on A6/A7-class hardware.
  • Storage pressure: Ars criticized the larger installation footprint, particularly for 8GB and 16GB devices, where limited free space made a major update more burdensome.
  • Not every announced feature was ready on day one: SMS forwarding and iCloud Photo Library were examples of capabilities whose finished availability lagged the initial release.

Apple’s release announcement also described the App Store as having more than 1.3 million apps in 155 countries and more than 300 million visitors each week. Those are company-reported figures from 2014 and provide launch-era context, not current catalog or traffic statistics.

Was iOS 8 a successful update?

As a platform release, iOS 8’s strongest achievement was changing how third-party software could fit into everyday iPhone and iPad use without abandoning Apple’s familiar interface. Its built-in improvements to Messages and Photos were useful, and Family Sharing and Continuity extended the system beyond a single device. Its shortcomings were also real: extension support was not universal, older hardware had uneven responsiveness, storage mattered more on low-capacity devices, and several announced features were not finished at launch.

That makes iOS 8 more significant as a functional turning point than as a visual makeover. This is a historical assessment of the 2014 release, not a recommendation to install it now or buy hardware that once supported it.
