Start with the official finding service for your earbuds. Use Find My for AirPods, Google Find Hub for Pixel Buds and compatible Android headphones, and Galaxy Wearable → Find My Earbuds for Galaxy Buds. If the app cannot connect or ring them, treat the map as a clue rather than proof and switch to a structured physical search.
Most earbuds do not have GPS. A displayed location may be the last place they connected to your phone or a location relayed by nearby devices through a crowdsourced Bluetooth network.
Identify your earbuds first

Features vary by exact model, case, phone, account, operating system, and settings. Do not assume that every case can be located or that every earbud can play a sound.

- Open Find My on an iPhone, iPad, Mac, or Apple Watch.
- Choose Devices.
- Select your AirPods.
- Read the status: current location, last known location, Offline, or No location found.
- If they are nearby and reachable, choose Play Sound or Find, depending on the model and device.
- Follow nearby-finding directions when your AirPods support that feature.
Apple says the AirPods must have been paired with an iPhone or iPad signed in to your Apple Account, and Find My must have been enabled before the loss for the relevant features to work. See Apple’s AirPods finding guide for model-specific capabilities.

AirPods limitations
- A sound may not play if the battery is depleted, the earbuds are too far away, or they cannot connect.
- When the earbuds are separated, Find My may show one at a time. Find that earbud, put it in the case, and refresh to expose the other when applicable.
- Case locating and case sounds are model-dependent. Do not assume the charging case communicates independently.
- Nearby directional finding is not available on every AirPods generation.
- If Find My network support was unavailable or disabled, the map may show only the last connection location.
Apple identifies additional nearby-finding capabilities for models including AirPods 3, AirPods 4 with ANC, AirPods Pro, and AirPods Max; supported features differ by model and generation. A map pin is not necessarily a live position.
Find Pixel Buds and compatible Android headphones
- Open Google Find Hub or the relevant Pixel Buds finding control.
- Select the Pixel Buds or headphones.
- Review the current, last-connected, or offline-network location.
- If they are nearby and connected, use the ring function.
- If the app distinguishes left and right earbuds, search them separately.
Google says Pixel Buds must be nearby and connected to the phone in order to ring. With compatible setup, Find Hub can remember where the earbuds were last connected and may use an encrypted crowdsourced network of Android devices. Ringing normally fails when the earbuds are dead, outside Bluetooth range, disconnected, or sealed inside a case that prevents them from communicating. Case finding also depends on the particular Pixel Buds case and its supported hardware.

Find Samsung Galaxy Buds
- Open Galaxy Wearable.
- Tap Find My Earbuds.
- Samsung Find or SmartThings Find will open.
- Select the Buds and inspect the reported location.
- Use Navigate to travel to the reported location and Ring when available.
- Use offline finding or lost-device features if Samsung offers them for your model.
Samsung says SmartThings Find can use nearby Samsung devices to detect supported missing devices through Bluetooth and relay an anonymous location. Availability varies with the Buds model, phone, Samsung account, permissions, app version, and prior configuration. Samsung’s March 3, 2026 compatibility document shows why Galaxy Buds should not be treated as one identical product family.
Galaxy-specific finding features may be limited when the Buds were primarily paired with an iPhone, PC, or non-Samsung device. Navigation takes you toward a reported location; it does not guarantee room-level accuracy. A case may not be independently locatable or ringable on every model.
What “offline,” “last known location,” and “no location found” mean

| Nearby but not ringing | They may be inside the case, out of battery, disconnected, or blocked by walls, furniture, or other objects. |
| Location updated elsewhere | A nearby compatible device may have relayed a Bluetooth detection. |
A last-known or crowdsourced location is a search lead, not proof that the earbuds are still there or that somebody stole them. Earbuds can disconnect before you leave a location, and a relay may be delayed or coarse.
If the app cannot find them: use a systematic physical search
Do not search randomly. People repeatedly inspect visible surfaces while missing pockets, seams, gaps, and places where they changed rooms. Use this sequence:

- Return to the last confirmed location. Reconstruct the previous 15 to 30 minutes, including where you sat down, changed clothes, removed a bag, or charged the earbuds.
- Check transition points. Search the bedside table, couch arms and gaps, desk, charging area, bathroom counter, kitchen counter, coat pockets, pants pockets, backpack compartments, and car center console.
- Search at floor level. Shine a flashlight close to the floor. A low angle makes small earbuds and their shadows easier to see under furniture.
- Inspect fabric. Shake blankets, towels, laundry, cushions, bags, and bedding over a clear surface. Feel along seams and inside folds.
- Search under furniture. Use your phone camera, a mirror, or a ruler to inspect beneath beds, sofas, cabinets, and car seats.
- Try ringing again. Pause music, fans, and household noise. Listen under cushions, in bedding, and inside the vehicle.
- Check unusual transfer points. Inspect the laundry basket, trash, pet bedding, children’s play areas, gym bag, hotel room, airplane seat area, rideshare, and venue lost-and-found.
- Record searched areas. Mark rooms and containers as you check them so you do not repeat the same search while overlooking the next location.
If the map says “home,” begin with the last-use route rather than every room. If the map points to a workplace, gym, hotel, vehicle, or public venue, contact its lost-and-found team and ask where items are logged.
Lost one earbud, the case, or everything?
One earbud
- Check whether the official app lists the left and right earbuds separately.
- Search the place where both were last used, then check pockets and clothing seams.
- Put the recovered earbud into its case before refreshing the app if the service reports only one at a time.
- Use a flashlight from floor level and inspect under furniture, car seats, bedding, and laundry.
Manufacturers may sell a single replacement earbud, but compatibility, generation, region, pairing, and service requirements vary. A replacement is not necessarily interchangeable with any case from the same brand.
The charging case
Case locating is separate from earbud locating. Some cases have their own speaker or finding-network support; others are simply containers. A closed, dead, or non-transmitting case may leave only an old earbud connection on the map. A tracker attached to the case can help in the future, but one purchased after this loss cannot recover the missing item.
Earbuds inside the case
The case may report a location even when the earbuds cannot ring. Conversely, the earbuds may appear at their last connection point while the case is elsewhere. Search the case as a separate object: bags, coat pockets, charging areas, vehicle compartments, bedside tables, and places where you normally put down keys.
Can a Bluetooth scanner app find them?
Sometimes. A generic Bluetooth scanner may show that a powered-on earbud is nearby, and changing signal strength can provide a rough “warmer or colder” clue. It cannot normally produce a reliable address or room-level map.
Signal strength is affected by walls, furniture, your body, device orientation, interference, and other Bluetooth devices. A scanner cannot help when the earbud is dead, powered off, disconnected, or enclosed in a case that is not transmitting. It may also show several similar generic devices, making identification difficult. Use the manufacturer’s finder first and treat a scanner as an optional fallback.

Do not confront a stranger based only on a map pin. The location may be stale, approximate, or relayed by another device.

- Use lost-mode or contact features where your platform provides them.
- Contact the venue, hotel, airline, gym, rideshare company, or transit operator’s lost-and-found department.
- Record the model, serial number, purchase information, and last confirmed location.
- Secure the associated Apple, Google, or Samsung account if you suspect account access or unauthorized pairing.
- File a police report when appropriate, with realistic expectations and the available identifying information.
- Do not publish your home address or personal contact details in a public lost-item listing.
Apple supports marking compatible AirPods as lost through Find My. The relevant options depend on the model and software version.

- Enable Find My, Find Hub, Samsung Find, or the manufacturer’s finding network before the earbuds disappear.
- Turn on separation alerts where your phone and model support them.
- Keep the case charged so it can communicate when applicable.
- Store the case in one consistent location.
- Use a brightly colored case, silicone holder, lanyard, or pouch.
- Attach a tracker to the charging case, not directly to a loose earbud.
- Record the exact model, generation, serial number, and purchase details.
Apple and Google support an industry specification for unwanted Bluetooth-tracker alerts on supported iOS and Android devices. Tracker tags should be used for your own property, not to monitor people without their knowledge; see Apple and Google’s unwanted-tracking announcement.
Should you buy a tracker for the case?
A tracker is mainly a prevention tool for the charging case. It does not replace the earbuds’ built-in finding system and will not recover earbuds that were already lost without a tag attached.
- AirPods and iPhone: An AirTag or slim AirTag holder is the most natural fit for the Apple ecosystem. Apple’s U.S. store listed an AirTag at $29 for one and $99 for four when observed on August 18, 2026; prices can change. See Apple’s AirTag store page.
- Galaxy Buds and Samsung Galaxy: A Galaxy SmartTag2 integrates with Samsung’s finding network. Samsung listed one at $29.99 in the U.S. when observed August 18, 2026. It adds size and needs a replaceable CR2032 battery. See Samsung’s product page.
- Pixel Buds and Android: Use built-in Find Hub support first. A compatible Google-network tracker can provide separate case tracking, but confirm phone and network compatibility.
- Generic earbuds: A loud third-party Bluetooth tracker may be more useful than relying only on the earbud manufacturer’s app. Chipolo distinguishes its app-based ONE from Point products that work exclusively with Google’s Find My Device app and Android phones; check the exact model before buying.
For very small cases, a bulky tag may be inconvenient. A holder, lanyard, or pouch is often more practical than trying to fit a tag inside the case.
When replacement makes more sense
Stop searching when the expected time and cost exceed the value of the remaining set, especially if the earbuds are old, water-damaged, or already suffering from weak batteries. Before buying a complete replacement:

- Confirm the exact generation and regional model number.
- Ask whether pairing or service is required.
- Be cautious with used marketplace parts: counterfeit components, worn batteries, mismatched generations, and pairing problems are common risks.
- Compare the cost of one official replacement with a new set that includes stronger finding support.
The practical order is simple: official finder first, nearby ringing or directions second, last-known-location reconstruction third, disciplined physical search fourth, and a Bluetooth scanner only as a limited fallback.
