The First Slam Dunk is currently listed on Netflix in the United States, but it did not newly arrive in 2026. Netflix announced its international streaming release for August 25, 2024. The film also has a 100% Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer score from 47 critic reviews, although that figure is not the same as a perfect average score and can change over time.

Yes—Netflix’s U.S. title page currently lists The First Slam Dunk, and JustWatch’s U.S. listing reported Netflix availability when checked on July 9, 2026. Netflix Standard with Ads was also listed as an option at that time.

Rotten Tomatoes currently lists The First Slam Dunk at 100% on the Tomatometer from 47 critic reviews. Its audience score is listed separately at 99% from more than 100 verified ratings. These figures were checked on August 18, 2026, and may change as Rotten Tomatoes adds or updates reviews.
The phrase “100% perfect rating” is attention-grabbing but technically imprecise. A 100% Tomatometer score means that all counted reviews were classified as positive. It does not mean every critic awarded the film a perfect 100, five stars, or an identical score.

The Tomatometer and audience score also measure different groups. The first reflects counted professional reviews; the second reflects verified audience ratings. Both are strong signals of reception, but neither proves that every viewer will consider the movie perfect.

What is The First Slam Dunk about?
The film follows Ryota Miyagi, the point guard for Shohoku High, as his team faces the reigning national champions, Sannoh Kogyo, in the Inter-High tournament.

The basketball game supplies the immediate suspense, but the movie is also a personal story about Ryota’s relationship with his older brother and his family’s history in Okinawa. His grief and determination give the game emotional weight beyond the scoreboard.
Directed and written by Takehiko Inoue, the creator of the original Slam Dunk manga, the film is not simply a conventional remake of the television anime. It focuses on the major Shohoku-versus-Sannoh match from the manga, while using Ryota’s memories and family story as its emotional framework.
The action is concentrated around one important game, so viewers should expect an intense sports drama rather than a broad, episodic introduction to every member of the team.

Do you need to watch the original anime first?
No, prior viewing is not strictly required—but it makes the film more meaningful.

- Manga reader: The feature-film treatment of the major match is likely to have the richest context.
The most accurate verdict is that the film is understandable without preparation, but not equally contextualized without it.

- U.S. rating: PG-13.
- Genres: Anime, drama, sports, and teen/high-school-oriented material.

Those choices can vary by country, profile language, and device. Do not assume every Netflix subscriber will see every audio or subtitle track.

Who should watch The First Slam Dunk?
It is a strong Netflix pick for anime viewers, sports-film fans, and anyone who enjoys emotionally grounded competition stories. Existing Slam Dunk fans have the most context, but newcomers do not need to complete the original anime before trying it.
The main caveat is expectation: this is not a fresh origin story and not a complete franchise recap. It is a focused feature about Ryota Miyagi, Shohoku’s defining game against Sannoh, and the personal history that makes that game matter.
