Verdict: The Fire TV Stick 4K Select is a legitimate low-cost 4K streamer, but its low price also buys you Amazon’s first Vega OS device—and that platform is less flexible and less mature than Android-based Fire TV. It makes sense for mainstream streaming in a second room when deeply discounted. At anything close to the price of an established Fire TV Stick 4K, the older model is usually the safer value.
What the Fire TV Stick 4K Select is
Released in 2025, the Fire TV Stick 4K Select (model AFTCA002) is Amazon’s budget 4K streaming stick and the first Fire TV Stick built on Vega OS 1.1 rather than Android-based Fire OS. Amazon says Vega is a Linux-based operating system designed specifically for its devices and will be used on future Fire TV Sticks. (Amazon’s Vega announcement)
The hardware includes a MediaTek MT8698 MCM processor with four ARM Cortex-A55 cores running at up to 1.7GHz, 1GB of LPDDR4 RAM, a G310v2 GPU, HDMI output with HDMI 2.1/2.0/1.4b compatibility, and HDCP 1.4/2.2/2.3. Amazon lists the model in the United States, United Kingdom, Japan, Canada, Mexico, India and several European markets; availability and app support vary by territory. (Amazon’s specification table)
The short version
- Pros: inexpensive 4K streaming, mainstream services, Alexa, HDR support, compact installation and a familiar Fire TV interface.
- Cons: only 1GB of RAM; a new app ecosystem; reported Wi-Fi 5 and micro-USB hardware; no Dolby Vision in independent testing; no sideloading; reduced specialist-app and Plex support; and reported 24p playback problems in tested apps.
Vega OS is the real story
Calling this merely a cheaper Fire TV Stick misses the important change. Existing Fire TV models run Android-based Fire OS, whose years of app support also make sideloading, Kodi, alternative media tools and specialist integrations possible. Vega is a new platform.

Amazon’s argument is reasonable: a purpose-built system could require fewer resources and allow tighter optimization on inexpensive hardware. Amazon describes Vega as enabling fast launches and smooth navigation, but that is a product claim, not independent comparative testing. The buyer’s risk is that a new platform starts with fewer native apps, fewer mature integrations and less support for unofficial uses.
That does not make Vega bad. It means the Select should be judged on what its software supports today, not on the assumption that future developer adoption is guaranteed.
What it does well for ordinary streaming
The Select can deliver up to 4K video on a compatible display and supports HDR10, HDR10+ and HLG where the content, app and television support them. Amazon also lists Dolby audio pass-through capabilities. Netflix, Disney+ and YouTube were usable in independent testing, and YouTube generally produced solid 4K HDR playback, although the reviewer observed occasional dropped frames and had to select 4K60 manually. Alexa voice control remains useful for launching programs, searching and controlling compatible smart-home devices. Setup is the usual stick routine: connect HDMI, provide USB power, join Wi-Fi and sign in to services. Paid services still require their own subscriptions; “more than 1.8 million movies and shows,” cited in Amazon marketing, is not an independently audited catalogue count.

Where the low price shows
Modest hardware
One gigabyte of RAM leaves less headroom than a higher-end streamer. A review also reports Wi-Fi 5 and micro-USB power, which are older choices than the wireless and connector standards found on premium models. These details should be checked against the current retail specification because product bundles and regional listings can differ.
The more consequential picture-quality limitation is Dolby Vision. The available review reports that the Select does not support it. It can still show excellent 4K HDR through supported formats, but owners of Dolby Vision televisions will not receive that format from this stick. Check Amazon’s current specification row before purchasing if Dolby Vision is important to you.
A smaller, younger app catalogue
Independent testing found no sideloading options, no games at the time of review, missing Tablo and HDHomeRun apps, and a Plex experience with fewer features than the Android-based version. Some applications were cloud-hosted rather than full native apps, with slower or less complete behavior; the review specifically noted differences affecting NFL Network and Plex.

Motion handling
The review also reported no proper 24p output in the tested applications, even with frame-rate matching enabled. That is a reviewer finding, not a universal laboratory conclusion, and firmware or app updates may change it. Nevertheless, film fans who are sensitive to judder should not assume that “4K” guarantees reference-quality playback.
Why 4K is not enough
Resolution is only one part of a streamer’s value. Before buying, consider:
- Which HDR formats your television and services use.
- Whether required apps are native, cloud-hosted or absent.
- Wi-Fi capability and network conditions.
- RAM, storage and interface responsiveness.
- Audio pass-through and remote-control features.
- Sideloading, Kodi and local-media requirements.
- Frame-rate behavior for films and international content.
- How close the price is to a more capable, established model.
Who should buy it?
Buy the Select if you have a 4K television, mainly watch services such as Prime Video, Netflix, Disney+ and YouTube, already use Alexa, and find the stick substantially cheaper than the established Fire TV alternatives. It is a reasonable second-bedroom, guest-room, dorm or holiday-home device when those needs are all you have.

Skip it if you rely on Kodi, Downloader, unofficial APKs, alternative launchers, advanced Plex, Tablo, HDHomeRun, local media, gaming or broad Android compatibility. It is also a poor match for a Dolby Vision-focused home theater or anyone who cares strongly about accurate 24p playback.

Existing Fire TV owners should not treat it as an automatic upgrade. Moving from Android-based Fire OS to Vega can remove capabilities you currently use, making the Select a sideways move—or a downgrade—despite its newer release date.
How it compares with the alternatives

The most important comparison is internal. If a discounted Fire TV Stick 4K is only slightly more expensive, its mature Fire OS ecosystem and broader feature set generally make it the better purchase. The 4K Max costs more but is the logical choice for demanding users who value performance, storage and newer wireless capability. Roku and Google TV are better fits when you want to avoid an Amazon-first interface. Apple TV 4K is a premium upgrade, not a budget substitute.
Use the price-gap test
Do not rely on an old sale headline or an unverified “regular” price. Check the live price of the Select, the current Fire TV Stick 4K and the 4K Max on the day you buy. If the Select is deeply discounted and your needs are basic, its compromises may be acceptable. If it is within a small margin of the established 4K model—or costs more than a discounted 4K or 4K Max—it is difficult to justify unless you specifically want to join Vega early.

Amazon says future Fire TV Sticks will use Vega, which gives the Select potential value as the first device on that platform. Potential is not present-day app coverage, however. Treat promised future growth as a reason to accept uncertainty, not as a feature already delivered.
Bottom line
The Fire TV Stick 4K Select is capable of ordinary 4K HDR streaming, and its compact design, Alexa support and low price are real advantages. But the price is not the whole story: 1GB of RAM, reported older connectivity, no reported Dolby Vision, a restricted sideloading model, missing specialist apps, reduced Plex functionality and motion concerns make Vega OS the product’s defining trade-off.
Buy it only when the discount is substantial and your needs stop at mainstream streaming. Otherwise, spend a little more on the established Fire TV Stick 4K, choose the 4K Max for performance, or move to Roku or Google TV for a different ecosystem.
