The Emergency Repair Disk (ERD) was a floppy-disk recovery aid for Windows NT and Windows 2000. It held selected information about a particular Windows installation and helped Setup attempt basic repairs; it was not a boot disk, full backup, or way to restore personal files. Modern Windows uses the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) and other recovery tools instead.
What an Emergency Repair Disk did
An ERD supplied repair information for a legacy Windows installation. Used alongside Windows Setup media, it could help address certain damaged system files, startup components, or boot-sector problems. Depending on the Windows generation and repair options, it could also be involved in restoring registry-related information. The goal was often to get Windows booting again—not to return the whole computer to precisely the state it was in before a failure.
The name can be misleading: the ERD was generally not independently bootable. A Windows NT or Windows 2000 setup CD or setup floppy set started the recovery process; Setup then requested the ERD when needed. The Windows 2000 Server Operations Guide describes the diskette as a limited repair aid, not a replacement for setup media or regular backups.

“ERD” does not mean exactly the same thing in every version. In particular, Windows 2000 did not store registry recovery data on the diskette in the same way as the Windows NT repair disk.

Microsoft’s archived Windows NT ERD guidance lists NT Workstation and Server versions 3.5 through 4.0 and explains that exact disk contents varied. For Windows 2000, see the Operations Guide’s ERD description.
What was on the disk?
Windows NT
Depending on the NT version and how the disk was created, it could include compressed files such as SYSTEM._, SOFTWARE._, SAM._, SECURITY._, and default._. Windows NT 4.0 could also include ntuser.da_. Setup-related files included Setup.log, Autoexec.nt, and Config.nt. These files represented selected system, registry, and configuration information—not a copy of the user’s whole computer.
Windows 2000
Windows 2000’s ERD included repair-related files such as Autoexec.nt, Config.nt, and Setup.log. Registry recovery information, when available through the relevant backup process, was kept in the installation’s repair directory rather than on the floppy in the same way as in NT. That distinction matters: saying simply that “an ERD backs up the registry” incorrectly merges two different workflows.

- Replace or check certain missing or damaged Windows system files.
- Repair a partition boot sector or elements of the startup environment.
- Repair selected registry or configuration components, particularly in Windows NT procedures.
- Rebuild or repair startup files such as
BOOT.INIandNTLDRin relevant NT-era procedures.
These were limited repair attempts, not guarantees. Microsoft’s archived Windows 2000 startup troubleshooting guidance describes repairs to system files, the partition boot sector, and startup environment while making clear that not every disk problem could be fixed.
An ERD did not:
- Back up ordinary documents, photos, or other personal files.
- Restore installed applications or generally restore device drivers.
- Provide a full system image or replace a regular backup.
- Fix every filesystem, partition, hardware, or physical-drive failure.
- Work as a standalone bootable recovery environment or replace the original Setup media.
Think of it as a narrow recovery aid intended to help make an installation bootable. If a repair succeeded, additional recovery from a proper system backup might still be necessary. The archived NT guidance and Windows 2000 Operations Guide both distinguish this limited role from full recovery.
How administrators created one
These are historical procedures for systems that supported the feature, not instructions for creating an ERD in Windows 10 or 11.
Windows NT
A documented NT method was to log on with administrative privileges, choose Start → Run, and enter:

rdisk /sThe Repair Disk utility then saved current configuration information to a blank, formatted 3.5-inch diskette. Period documentation advised updating the disk after significant system changes. A disk created before major configuration changes might not reflect the installation as it stood when a failure occurred. See the historical Windows NT support procedure.
Windows 2000
The documented menu path was Start → Programs → Accessories → System Tools → Backup. In Backup, choose Emergency Repair Disk and, if desired, the option to back up the registry to the repair directory. The process required a blank, formatted floppy disk. The diskette did not start the machine by itself. In a typical Windows 2000 repair, an administrator started the computer from the Windows 2000 setup CD or setup floppy disks, entered the repair workflow in Setup, and inserted the ERD when prompted. Setup offered Fast Repair, which applied available repair operations, or Manual Repair, which let the administrator select repair categories. The exact steps and options varied by installation and failure.

A repair could fail, and a successful repair did not necessarily restore the latest configuration. For example, replacing files could leave the installation on an older baseline. Archived Microsoft guidance warns that some Windows 2000 emergency repairs could require reinstalling a service pack afterward; check the system’s update state if working on one of these historical machines. Common limitations and failure cases
- The disk is from another computer: Do not treat an ERD as interchangeable. Repair information was associated with the installation or machine for which it was created; using mismatched information could result in an invalid repair. - The ERD is stale: A disk created before important configuration changes may no longer represent the current installation.
- The floppy is unreadable or missing: Age, physical damage, or loss could make the diskette unusable. It was a single physical artifact, not an online recovery service.
- Setup media is unavailable: The ERD generally cannot initiate recovery alone. The original setup CD or floppy set was normally needed.
- The hard drive is failing: An ERD is not a tool for recovering data from a physically failing disk. Prioritize preserving data and use an appropriate backup or specialist recovery method.
- No ERD exists: Some Windows 2000 Setup situations could proceed if Setup located the existing installation, but that was a conditional fallback, not an equivalent replacement for a matching ERD. The available route depended on the error and setup state; see Microsoft’s NTLDR troubleshooting guidance.
What replaced the ERD?
The modern conceptual counterpart is not one renamed diskette. Microsoft’s current startup troubleshooting guidance centers on the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE), with tools such as Startup Repair, System Restore, recovery or installation media, and offline troubleshooting. A system image or other reliable backup serves the broader purpose the ERD never did: restoring data and a fuller system state.
One historical detail can cause confusion when following old instructions: Microsoft says automatic registry backups in RegBack stopped being made by default beginning with Windows 10 version 1803. Do not assume a current Windows PC has usable registry backups there or treat copying files from that folder as a universal repair. Follow current Microsoft guidance for the specific Windows version and startup problem.
In short, an ERD is relevant when understanding or repairing a Windows NT/2000 installation. For current Windows, use the recovery tools and backup methods intended for that version; a modern USB installer or WinRE environment is broader and different from the old installation-specific repair floppy.
