Crop sensitive content out whenever possible, or cover it with an opaque shape, export the flattened image, and inspect that exact file before sharing.
Choose the tool by the job
The right screenshot editor depends on your operating system, the kind of information you need to hide, and whether you capture images occasionally or every day.

If the material is a credential, access token, private message or high-impact personal data, the safest workflow is to avoid capturing it or crop it away. A blur effect can make text hard to read while leaving enough visual information to invite guessing or analysis.
How to blur or redact a screenshot safely
1. Capture less information
Before pressing the capture shortcut, close unrelated tabs, notifications and chat windows. Remove account names, browser URLs, file paths and other background details that do not support your explanation. If the sensitive region is not needed, do not include it.

2. Select the smallest necessary region
Open the image in your chosen editor and draw the selection around the complete item you want to hide. Include labels, nearby identifiers and any text that could provide context. Zoom in while selecting; a narrow selection can leave a readable character at its edge.
3. Prefer removal or an opaque cover for high-consequence data
Crop the region out when the composition still makes sense. If you must preserve the surrounding layout, place a solid, opaque rectangle over the information. A cover should extend beyond the text, and the final file should be exported or flattened so that hidden layers, editable objects or reversible annotations are not delivered alongside the image.
4. Use blur or pixelation for lower-risk visual concealment
Blur and pixelize are useful when the reader needs to see that an area exists but not read it—for example, a portion of a support screenshot. They are not a guarantee of irreversible sanitization. Do not present a blurred password, token or private conversation as securely destroyed.
5. Inspect the saved file, not just the editor canvas
Open the actual PNG, JPEG or WebP that you plan to send. View it at a zoom where the original text would have been legible. Check the redacted area and the rest of the frame for names, email addresses, account IDs, browser tabs, URLs, notifications and file paths. Only then upload or attach it.

Microsoft’s Snipping Tool documentation describes a workflow in which a captured snip opens for editing, saving and sharing. Its “Copy or redact text” actions use OCR to recognize text and offer quick redaction for detected email addresses and phone numbers. Microsoft says recognition is processed locally on the device.

- Open Snipping Tool and capture the required window, region or screen.
- In the resulting snip, open the text actions feature.
- Review the recognized text and choose the quick-redact option for the email addresses or phone numbers you intend to hide.
- Save a new image, then reopen that saved file and inspect it before sharing.
This is a targeted convenience feature, not comprehensive data-loss prevention. Manually cover anything it does not recognize, including passwords, API keys, names, faces or private text. If OCR misses a character or identifies the wrong region, the automatic action cannot be relied on as your only review.
ShareX: the flexible free Windows workflow
ShareX is documented as a free, open-source Windows capture and productivity utility. Its materials describe blur and pixelate tools in capture annotation and image editing, plus smart eraser, crop and cut-out functions in the image editor. After capture, you can open the editor, save, copy or upload.
Typical ShareX procedure
- Start a region, window or full-screen capture in ShareX.
- Open the result in the integrated image editor rather than sending it directly to an upload destination.
- Choose blur or pixelate for ordinary visual concealment, or use crop/cut-out, smart eraser or an opaque shape when the information must not remain visible.
- Check the entire canvas at high zoom, then save a separate exported file.
- Reopen the exported file. Only after that review should you use ShareX’s copy or upload task.
ShareX’s configurable after-capture tasks are powerful, but they create a possible failure mode: an image can be uploaded before you have reviewed the edit. Configure the workflow to open the editor and save locally first. The project’s Image Editor documentation explains the available editing controls, while the repository README describes the broader application.
Greenshot: straightforward capture and annotation
Greenshot’s official help documents Print-key and menu-based capture followed by an editor. In that editor you can annotate, crop, blur or pixelize a selection, then save, use Save As, copy to the clipboard or print.
- Capture a region, window or screen with Greenshot.
- When prompted, open the capture in the image editor.
- Select the sensitive area and apply blur or pixelize; use crop if the area is unnecessary.
- Export with Save or Save As, then inspect the exported file at readable zoom.
Greenshot is a good fit when you want capture and basic markup without ShareX’s larger set of automation choices. The cited help page does not establish a current platform or version comparison, so check your organization’s supported edition before deployment.

Snagit: a commercial editing option
TechSmith’s Snagit Help 2023 describes tools that remove, replace or hide parts of screenshots, including blur and shape tools. That makes Snagit a candidate for teams that prefer a commercial editor and need polished annotations alongside redaction.

The text is still readable after blur
The selection may be too small, the blur radius too low, or the exported image may be displayed at a different scale. Re-edit with a larger selection, use an opaque cover or crop, export again and inspect the saved file.
OCR redaction missed information
Snipping Tool’s documented quick actions target recognized email addresses and phone numbers. Manually redact passwords, tokens, names and other categories, then check the full image rather than trusting the OCR result.
A hidden layer or annotation can be recovered
You may have shared an editable project or a file with reversible objects instead of a flattened export. Deliver a newly exported raster image and reopen it in a separate viewer before sending.
The wrong image was uploaded
An automatic after-capture upload task may have run before review. Disable or reorder upload actions so the editor and local save occur first. If an image was already uploaded, remove the remote copy according to that service’s controls and treat the information as exposed.

Inspect browser chrome, notifications, tabs, URLs, file paths and account identifiers. Recapture with a tighter region or crop those details before export.

Is blur enough to hide a password?
No. For credentials and other high-impact secrets, do not capture them or crop them out. If context requires the area, use an opaque cover, flatten the export and inspect it.
Does Snipping Tool redact every sensitive word automatically?
No. Microsoft documents OCR-assisted quick redaction for recognized email addresses and phone numbers; it does not establish universal secret detection.
Can I upload a redacted image directly from ShareX?
Yes, ShareX supports upload tasks, but save and inspect the edited file first. Upload should be a deliberate final step, not an automatic shortcut.
Which tool works on phones?
