The HP OfficeJet 250 is the best overall portable printer for mobile documents because it can print, scan, and copy, runs from a battery, and supports Wi-Fi Direct and Bluetooth. If you only need full-size printing, the Canon PIXMA TR150 is a better-fitting alternative. For phone photos, choose a dedicated photo printer such as the Canon SELPHY QX20; it cannot replace a document printer.
There is no single best portable printer for every job. The right choice depends first on whether you need letter/A4 documents, small photos, instant film, or specialized monochrome forms.

A genuinely mobile printer can be carried to a client meeting, hotel room, event, vehicle, or job site and used without relying entirely on a wall outlet. That normally means a manageable weight, a rechargeable or optional battery, mobile connectivity, and a paper path designed for small print runs.

“Small” does not automatically mean portable. A compact home printer that needs AC power and weighs several kilograms belongs in a home-printer comparison, not a mobile-printer ranking.

Make the choice in this order
- Choose the output. For documents, look at the HP OfficeJet 250, Canon TR150, or Epson WF-110. For photos, choose a dedicated photo or instant-film printer.
- Check the largest paper size. Pocket photo media is not a substitute for letter or A4 paper. Verify support for envelopes, card stock, borderless output, and custom sizes if you need them.
- Decide whether scanning and copying matter. If they do, the HP 250 is the obvious category fit. If you only print, an all-in-one adds unnecessary bulk.
- Confirm the battery arrangement. Is it included, optional, internal, rechargeable, and usable while charging? USB connectivity does not necessarily mean USB-powered operation.
- Check the phone workflow. Wi-Fi Direct, Bluetooth, AirPrint, Mopria, and a manufacturer app do not provide identical experiences.
- Calculate supply costs. Ink, film, proprietary paper, cleaning cycles, and replacement batteries can matter more than the initial printer price.
1. HP OfficeJet 250: best overall portable printer
Best for: travelers and field workers who need to print, scan, and copy normal documents.
The HP OfficeJet 250 is the most versatile recommendation in this group. It combines a mobile inkjet printer with a scanner and copier, includes a 10-sheet automatic document feeder, and has a 50-sheet input capacity. HP lists ISO-rated speeds of up to 10 pages per minute in black and 7 pages per minute in color.
It supports battery, AC, and USB power options, along with Wi-Fi Direct and Bluetooth. That makes it useful when there is no router available, although setup and permissions can still depend on HP’s software and the phone’s operating system.
The scanner is the feature that separates it from most rivals. It can handle signed forms, receipts, identification documents, and paperwork that must be copied in the field. The trade-off is size and weight: this is portable for a car, travel case, or office bag, not a pocket.
Buy it if: you need one mobile machine for documents, scans, and copies.
Skip it if: you only print a few pages, need pocket portability, or want cheap high-volume color printing.

2. Canon PIXMA TR150: best print-only letter-size printer
Best for: people who need full-size documents but do not need a scanner or copier.
The Canon PIXMA TR150 is a simpler and potentially more convenient choice than the HP 250 when printing is the only requirement. Canon says it handles documents and borderless photos up to 8.5 by 11 inches, making it a true letter-size mobile printer rather than a photo gadget.
Canon lists rated speeds of 9 images per minute in black and 5.5 images per minute in color. The printer supports Canon PRINT, Apple AirPrint, and Mopria for mobile workflows. Wi-Fi Direct or another direct-connection mode is preferable when traveling without a trusted network.

Skip it if: you need to scan or copy, or if adding the battery makes the total cost too close to a more capable all-in-one.
3. Epson WorkForce WF-110: best compact professional alternative
Best for: business users who prioritize a dedicated mobile document printer.

Epson identifies the WF-110 as using pigment ink. That can be useful for document durability, but it is not a reason to promise archival, waterproof, or smudge-proof results without testing the exact ink-and-paper combination. The official product page also indicates that the printer is intended for Epson cartridges rather than third-party ink.
The WF-110 can be attractive for professionals who want a smaller print-only setup, but its official price and supply restrictions make “best value” an unsupported conclusion. Compare the complete purchase price, cartridge availability, and expected usage before choosing it over the Canon.
Buy it if: you want an integrated battery and a business-oriented print-only design.

4. Canon SELPHY QX20: best pocket photo printer
Best for: small, polished photos from a phone.
The Canon SELPHY QX20 uses dye-sublimation printing for compact color photos. Canon promotes smooth color gradations and long-lasting prints, while independent testing confirms the more important limitation: the QX20 cannot print ordinary office documents.
The QX20 works through Canon’s SELPHY Photo Layout app on iOS and Android. Canon describes the app as an exclusive part of the workflow, so the app’s compatibility, permissions, editing tools, and connection behavior matter as much as the printer hardware. The product information also describes an internet connection requirement for the app experience; verify the current setup requirements for your phone and region.
Its media is effectively the ink. A low printer price does not guarantee low ownership cost, because every photo requires a compatible ink-and-paper set. Calculate the price per sheet and confirm that replacement packs are readily available before buying.
Buy it if: you want better-controlled small phone photos for albums, journals, or social events.
Skip it if: you need letter/A4 pages, scans, copies, labels, or forms.

The Fujifilm instax mini Link+ prints smartphone images onto instax mini instant film. It connects over Bluetooth through the instax mini Link app, offers creative modes, and can print up to 10 selected images in one operation according to Fujifilm’s product information.
Fujifilm announced U.S. availability for early February 2026 at an MSRP of $169.95. That announcement price is not a guarantee of the current retail price or stock status. Film is sold separately and is a recurring cost.
This is an experience-focused product: the physical film, developing image, and creative modes are the point. It is not intended for reports, shipping labels, receipts, or full-size photos.
Buy it if: you want creative instant prints at gatherings or while traveling.
Skip it if: you need a practical mobile office printer or want the lowest cost per image.
6. Fujifilm instax mini Link 3: best simple instant-photo option
Best for: straightforward smartphone-to-instax mini printing.
The instax mini Link 3 follows the same basic model: Bluetooth connection, a dedicated smartphone app, and instax mini film. It belongs in the instant-photo category, not alongside letter-size document printers.
Choose it when you prefer a simpler instax workflow and do not need the additional creative features associated with the Link+. Confirm current app support and film availability for your phone before purchase.
Not for: documents, copying, scanning, or high-volume economical printing.
7. Fujifilm Instax Link WIDE: best wide-format instant photos
Best for: larger instant-style prints.
The Instax Link WIDE uses the wider instax WIDE format, giving photos more physical space than mini prints. It is a better choice for group shots, displays, and creative projects where mini film feels too cramped.
The larger format also means larger media to carry and a higher potential cost per print. Like the other instax printers, it is a smartphone photo device rather than a document printer.
Not for: letter/A4 paperwork, forms, or office printing.

The Canon SELPHY CP1500 is better viewed as a compact photo-printer option than as a pocket printer. Its broader photo-printer format can suit people who want higher-quality small photographs at home and may sometimes take the unit on a trip. Check the exact battery and accessory configuration before assuming it can operate away from AC power.
It makes sense when your priority is photo printing rather than documents. If you need a printer that routinely fits in a laptop bag and runs from a battery, the mobile inkjet picks are more appropriate.
Not for: full-size office documents or buyers who need the smallest possible setup.
9. Brother PocketJet 773 or a current PocketJet equivalent: best specialized monochrome option
Best for: field forms, receipts, and workflows that only require black-and-white output.
Brother PocketJet printers are specialized thermal mobile printers. They can be useful in delivery, logistics, service, and field-documentation environments where avoiding liquid ink is more important than color or photo quality.
Do not buy one based on the word “portable” alone. Check the exact current model, supported operating systems, drivers, paper dimensions, connection method, and total cost of proprietary thermal media. Thermal printing also means no color and a different approach to long-term document storage.
Not for: color charts, photos, or buyers who want ordinary inkjet paper and broad consumer compatibility.
10. Polaroid Hi-Print 2×3 or a comparable pocket dye-sublimation printer
Best for: small social-media-style photos from a phone.

- Canon TR150: the battery is optional, so a base unit may require AC power.
- Epson WF-110: has a built-in rechargeable battery and can support an optional external battery.
- Photo printers: commonly use rechargeable batteries, but charging methods and runtime vary.
Manufacturer print-speed ratings may use ISO conditions, AC power, or a particular quality mode. Battery-mode speed may differ. Do not interpret a published pages-per-minute figure as a guarantee of travel battery life.

Phone connectivity and setup
Wireless printing has several distinct modes:
- Wi-Fi through a router: convenient at home, but hotel networks may isolate devices or require a browser login.
- Wi-Fi Direct: connects the phone directly to the printer without a router and is often the best travel option.
- Bluetooth: useful for short-range pairing, especially with photo printers, but often depends on the maker’s app.
- AirPrint and Mopria: system-level options that can reduce app dependence when the printer and file type are supported.
- USB: a useful fallback, but a USB port does not prove that the printer can run from USB power.
The HP OfficeJet 250 supports Bluetooth and Wi-Fi Direct. The Canon TR150 supports Canon PRINT, Apple AirPrint, and Mopria. The QX20 relies on Canon’s SELPHY Photo Layout app, while the instax mini Link+ uses the instax mini Link app and Bluetooth. In phone-first products, the app is part of the product: it controls setup, permissions, cropping, templates, and print reliability.
If your phone cannot find the printer
- Wake the printer and check that it is not asleep, out of paper, or showing an error.
- Install the current manufacturer app and grant the permissions it requests for Bluetooth, local network access, photos, or location.
- When no router is available, connect the phone to the printer’s Wi-Fi Direct network if supported.
- Remove and re-add the printer in the app.
- Test with a simple PDF or JPEG before troubleshooting a complex document.
- Use AirPrint or Mopria where the printer and operating system support them.
Exact menu labels change between iOS, Android, and app versions. Hotel Wi-Fi can be especially troublesome; direct connection is usually more reliable. Avoid leaving a printer or battery in a hot vehicle, where heat, vibration, and power limitations can damage equipment or shorten battery life.
Running cost: calculate it before buying
Printer price is only the entry cost. For inkjets, a basic estimate is:

Use the specific cartridge model, regional price, and published yield standard. Real results vary with page coverage, print quality, color use, and cleaning cycles. Do not compare an inkjet’s black-page estimate with a photo printer’s media price as if they were the same workload.
For photo printers:
Cost per print = media-pack price ÷ number of included sheets
With dye-sublimation printers, the paper pack normally includes the color ribbon or cartridge, so the media is effectively the ink. With instant-film printers, the film is the consumable. Add optional batteries, carrying cases, adapters, and special paper to the initial purchase price.

Also check:
- Whether high-yield cartridges are available.
- Whether third-party ink is supported, restricted, or unsupported.
- Whether replacement film or paper is stocked by multiple mainstream retailers.
- Whether the battery is replaceable and what replacement costs.
- Whether a subscription is required for any part of the workflow.
Print quality and real-world portability
Assess quality by job, not by a single “photo quality” score:
- Documents: small black text, fine lines, forms, and drying time.
- Color work: charts, shading, borderless output, and smudge resistance.
- Photos: color gradation, crop behavior, paper surface, and expected durability.
- Field use: resistance to handling, heat, dust, and vibration.
A printer that looks excellent on a desk may be inconvenient in a bag. Include the battery, power adapter, paper, ink, and protective case when judging portability. Check whether the paper tray folds closed, whether cartridges or film can be carried safely, whether the device needs a flat surface, and whether it can print while charging.
Phone photos can also look different on paper because displays are backlit and often set to vivid color modes. The final result depends on screen brightness and profile, app editing, printer processing, paper or film, crop settings, and ambient light.
When a portable printer is the wrong purchase
Choose a conventional home printer instead if you print frequently, need a large paper tray, or do not actually need battery operation. Epson’s EcoTank ET-2400, for example, is a home-oriented all-in-one with a 250-sheet tray. That design may be more economical for regular home printing, but it is not a practical travel printer.

A monochrome laser printer may be preferable for regular black-text work at a fixed location. A thermal printer can make more sense for receipts, labels, or forms. For only a few pages during a trip, a hotel business center, library, office-supply store, or print-service kiosk may cost less and eliminate the burden of carrying supplies.
