Spotify was the best all-round music streaming app for most Android and iPhone users in 2022, thanks to its free tier, playlist discovery, social features and broad device support. Choose Apple Music instead for Apple-device integration and included lossless and Dolby Atmos audio; YouTube Music for videos, covers and remixes; Amazon Music if Prime and Alexa already shape your household; and Tidal or Qobuz if hi-fi listening matters most.
This is a historical buying guide to the US service landscape in 2022—not a list of current prices or features. Plans and product capabilities have since changed. The recommendations below are based on what mattered then: how you listen, what devices you use, and whether discovery, free access, audio quality or a bundle is most valuable.

Plan names, prices, taxes, trials and billing terms changed over time and could differ between direct signup and app-store billing. Rather than treat a 2022 price as a current quote, compare the plan available in your country and the benefits you will actually use. Contemporary comparisons described several major services as having roughly 90 million or more tracks, but catalogue totals were provider claims and were not directly comparable: versions, remasters, regional releases and duplicates could be counted differently. 1. Spotify: best overall for most people
Spotify was the safest recommendation if you wanted one app that worked well across a mixed household of Android and iPhone users, computers, cars, TVs, consoles and speakers. Its case was not simply that it offered a large mainstream catalogue. Playlists, personalised mixes, radio and autoplay helped turn a library into something to listen to when you did not know what to play. Collaborative playlists and social sharing also made it easier to share music with friends.

Its free, ad-supported tier was a major advantage in 2022, especially for listeners willing to accept ads and restrictions. Mobile playback controls could be more limited than desktop listening, so “free Spotify” did not mean unrestricted, always-on-demand listening. Premium added offline downloads and a more flexible listening experience. Downloads were cached inside the app, not MP3s you owned, and generally required an active subscription and account access.
The important trade-off: Spotify did not offer lossless streaming in 2022. It was therefore a poor fit if lossless was a must-have, but for most people its discovery and compatibility mattered more than a specification they might not hear. Do not apply today’s Spotify feature list retroactively: its current product pages describe features that were not part of the 2022 service. 2. Apple Music: best for iPhone integration and lossless audio
Apple Music made the most sense for listeners already using an iPhone alongside AirPods, Apple Watch, HomePod, Siri or CarPlay. That ecosystem connection can make everyday use simpler, but it does not automatically make Apple Music the best choice for every iPhone owner: someone who relies on shared playlists, recommendations or non-Apple devices may prefer Spotify.
Apple Music was also a strong technical value in 2022. Apple had added lossless audio and Dolby Atmos/spatial audio without an additional charge to the standard paid subscription. Lossless preserves more of the source audio data than lossy compression; spatial mixes offer a different presentation and were not available for every track. Both advantages depend on the recording and the way you listen. Many Bluetooth listening chains do not transmit the full lossless stream, while capable wired headphones, speakers or a suitable DAC can make the format more relevant.
Apple Music was available on Android as well as iPhone, so Android owners could subscribe. Its best ecosystem advantages, however, remained Apple-oriented. There was no permanent free tier comparable to Spotify’s ad-supported plan; a trial, when offered, was temporary. Apple Music was also a logical choice if you wanted to keep your listening service close to the Apple library and device experience. 3. YouTube Music: best for videos, covers and rare recordings
Choose YouTube Music if your listening regularly goes beyond official album tracks. Its connection to YouTube made it especially useful for finding live performances, covers, remixes and other recordings that may not appear in a conventional licensed-music catalogue. That practical breadth is different from a comparable count of licensed songs: a video, fan upload or alternate version is not the same thing as a standard album track.
A free ad-supported option existed, but background playback and offline downloads were important limitations. A paid YouTube Music plan improved the music experience. YouTube Premium could be a better overall bundle if you also wanted ad-free viewing and background playback in the main YouTube app; evaluate that against a music-only subscription rather than assuming the products are interchangeable. 4. Amazon Music: best for Prime and Alexa households
Amazon Music was most attractive if you already used Prime, Alexa speakers or other Amazon devices. Alexa voice control and the Prime relationship could make it convenient, and eligible Amazon Music plans included HD and Ultra HD listening options in the 2022 landscape.
Do not confuse Prime Music with Amazon Music Unlimited. Prime Music came with restrictions on catalogue access or playback compared with the full on-demand Unlimited service. If you want to search for any album and play it on demand, confirm which plan provides that before assuming Prime alone is enough. The distinction is one of the most consequential subscription details in this comparison.
5. Tidal: best for hi-fi audio plus artist content
Tidal was a credible choice for listeners who wanted higher-quality formats, music videos and artist-focused editorial or other content. Its 2022 offering separated features and formats across HiFi and HiFi Plus plans: lossless, hi-res and immersive options depended on the plan and the individual track. That made the service harder to compare at a glance with Apple Music or Amazon Music.

Choose Tidal if you have equipment that can use its higher-quality options and you value its wider content mix. If you mainly want playlists and low-friction discovery, Spotify or Apple Music was generally an easier default. Technical format labels are not a guarantee that every track will sound better: mastering, headphones, speakers and connection all matter. Qobuz suited listeners who specifically wanted high-resolution FLAC, music-focused editorial and the option to purchase and download music. It had a clear audiophile proposition, but a narrower mainstream appeal than Spotify or Apple Music. Before choosing it, consider whether the app and integrations fit your car, speakers, TV, watch and other devices; specialist sound quality is less useful if the service does not fit how you listen.
Qobuz was not the obvious choice for casual listeners who chiefly wanted familiar playlists, effortless social sharing or a permanent free tier. It was a better match for people who deliberately sought high-resolution files and were prepared to choose hardware and listening routines around that priority. 7. Deezer: a polished alternative
Deezer offered a broad music service, playlists and a lossless HiFi option, making it a reasonable alternative if you wanted something outside the Spotify–Apple Music choice. It was not a universal winner: Spotify had a stronger case for many listeners who prioritised discovery and social tools, while Apple Music had a clearer advantage for Apple-device integration and included spatial audio.
Deezer made sense if its interface, playlists, availability or lossless plan better matched your needs. As with any service, check that the tracks and versions you care about are available in your country and on your preferred devices.

8. Pandora: best for radio-style listening
Pandora remained relevant for listeners who preferred to start a station and let the music play rather than choose every song or album. Its free experience was station-oriented, and its paid Premium offering was more relevant if you wanted greater on-demand control. That makes Pandora a poor default for someone looking for a full Spotify-style library, but a good fit for passive listening and radio-like discovery. Its availability and plan details are market-specific; this recommendation is primarily for US readers.
Which one should you choose?
- I use Android and Windows, or my household mixes platforms: Start with Spotify for consistency across devices and strong playlists. Consider YouTube Music if you already spend a lot of time on YouTube, or Amazon Music if Alexa and Prime are central to your home.
- I use an iPhone, Apple Watch, AirPods or HomePod: Apple Music is the natural first try, especially if lossless and spatial audio matter. Spotify remains a strong alternative if its discovery, social features or mixed-platform continuity are more useful.
- I want better music recommendations: Spotify is the best first choice based on its recommendation and playlist feature set in 2022. Apple Music offered editorial curation; Pandora suited station-based discovery; YouTube Music surfaced a wider mix of videos, covers and live material. No one service is objectively best for every listener.
- I want live performances, remixes, covers or music videos: Try YouTube Music. If you also want fewer ads across main YouTube, compare the YouTube Premium bundle with a music-only plan.
- I already pay for Prime and use Alexa: Try Amazon Music, but verify whether Prime Music’s restrictions meet your needs or whether you need Unlimited for full on-demand access.
- I want lossless sound without a specialist setup: Apple Music was a strong 2022 value because lossless and Dolby Atmos were included in its standard paid subscription. If you have high-quality wired equipment and want high-resolution FLAC or hi-fi content, compare Qobuz and Tidal as well.
- I want unrestricted music for free: There was no perfect major-service option. Spotify and Pandora offered free ad-supported listening, but with ads and restrictions; YouTube Music’s free tier had background-play and download limitations. A free trial is temporary, not a permanent free plan.
- I have limited mobile data or storage: Use a paid plan’s offline downloads when available, set quality and download controls conservatively, and avoid downloading high-resolution audio unless you need it. High-resolution files can use substantially more storage and data than compressed streams.
- I use CarPlay or Android Auto: Check the exact app support and controls for your phone, vehicle and service before committing. App availability on both mobile platforms does not guarantee identical features across devices.
What to check before switching
- Search for essential music. Check favourite artists, albums and specific versions, including live recordings, remasters, clean editions and regional releases. Headline catalogue counts do not guarantee a particular recording is available.
- Test your actual devices. Try the service in your car, on your main headphones, on a smart speaker and on any watch or TV you use. Confirm that the controls and integrations you rely on work on your platform.
- Try discovery, not just search. A service can have your favourite songs but still be a poor fit if its playlists, recommendations, radio or queue do not suit your habits.
- Check downloads before cancelling the old plan. A music-app download is generally licensed cache, not a file you own. Offline tracks can stop working if your subscription ends, your account changes or the app requires an online licence check. Make sure the new service works offline before ending the old one.
- Preserve and inspect playlists. Playlist-transfer tools can help, but matching is imperfect. Review obscure tracks, alternate versions and local files after a transfer; save or export important playlists where the service allows it.
- Review household terms. Family plans can provide separate libraries and recommendations, but check the number of accounts, household eligibility, simultaneous-stream rules and parental controls for the plan available in your region. A student discount is not a family plan, and benefits bundled with video or storage should be compared only if your household will use them.
Sound quality: what the labels do—and do not—tell you
Lossy audio compresses sound by discarding some audio information; lossless formats preserve the source data. High-resolution audio uses greater bit depth and/or sample rates than standard CD-quality audio. Dolby Atmos or other spatial mixes change the presentation and are available only for selected releases. In 2022, Spotify offered high-quality lossy streaming but no lossless tier; Apple Music included lossless and spatial options, while Amazon Music, Tidal, Qobuz and Deezer offered higher-quality choices in different forms and plans. Higher resolution is not an automatic win. The source master may matter more than the file specification; a spatial mix may sound different rather than better; Bluetooth can be the limiting link; and larger files consume more data and storage. For many people, the ability to find something great to play—and an app that works everywhere they listen—is a more valuable daily improvement than a format they may not notice.
Free, paid and bundled plans
When comparing services, distinguish a permanent free tier from a trial and from access included with another subscription. Spotify offered an ad-supported tier; Pandora’s free use centred on stations; YouTube Music had a free ad-supported option with limitations. Apple Music, Tidal, Qobuz and Amazon Music Unlimited were principally paid services, though trials or other promotions might be offered. Amazon Prime Music was bundled with Prime, but was not the same as unrestricted Unlimited access. YouTube Premium combined ad-free YouTube benefits with YouTube Music access, so its value depends on whether you also watch YouTube.

For households, compare separate accounts and recommendations, parental controls, household rules and simultaneous listening—not just a monthly headline. Prices and terms are time- and location-sensitive, and app-store billing can differ. Treat any old 2022 figure as historical rather than a current offer.

Privacy and artist pay
Free tiers are funded in part by advertising, and personalised recommendations rely on listening activity. Review an app’s privacy and account controls if you do not want listening history to shape recommendations or be used in personalisation. It is difficult to name one service as universally best for artist pay: compensation varies with territory, contracts, rights ownership and stream type, so a simple ranking would be misleading.
Head-to-head choices
Spotify vs Apple Music
Pick Spotify for discovery, a permanent free option, collaboration and a more neutral choice across mixed devices. Pick Apple Music for Apple ecosystem integration and the 2022 combination of lossless and Dolby Atmos in the standard paid plan. The right choice depends on whether everyday convenience or audio features matter more.
Apple Music vs YouTube Music
Apple Music was stronger for conventional album listening, Apple-device integration and lossless/spatial options. YouTube Music was more compelling for video, covers, remixes, live versions and its connection to YouTube. If YouTube Premium’s ad-free video benefits matter to you, include the bundle in the comparison.
Spotify vs YouTube Music
Spotify was the better all-round pick for playlists, social features, cross-platform continuity and a free music-listening option. YouTube Music was the better fit if the recordings you seek often live as videos, live sets, covers or remixes.
Apple Music vs Tidal or Qobuz for sound quality
Apple Music was the straightforward value choice for lossless and spatial audio without moving to a specialist service. Tidal could suit listeners who also wanted artist content, video and immersive formats; Qobuz was especially clear for high-resolution FLAC and purchases. Compare actual track availability and your playback equipment, not just format labels.
Amazon Music vs Apple Music for lossless value
Both offered higher-quality listening options in 2022. Apple Music’s appeal was a standard subscription that included lossless and Dolby Atmos, particularly for Apple users. Amazon Music made more sense for Prime and Alexa households, but Prime Music should not be mistaken for the full Unlimited service.
Spotify vs Pandora for free listening
Spotify’s free tier was better suited to listeners who wanted playlists and a broad streaming-app experience, subject to ads and mobile restrictions. Pandora was better if you wanted stations to play in the background without choosing each track. Neither was a perfect replacement for unrestricted, offline, on-demand listening without paying.
