For U.S. buyers shopping at 2025 prices, the Google Pixel 9a was the best all-around budget smartphone: it combined a capable camera, a 120Hz OLED display, strong performance and seven years of software support for a $499 launch price. The best alternative depended on what mattered most: choose Samsung’s Galaxy A56 for a larger screen and sturdier build, Nothing’s Phone 3a for value and performance, or a Motorola Moto G for the lowest upfront cost.
This is a retrospective buying guide to 2025 models, not a list of guaranteed 2026 sale prices. The prices below are U.S. launch or reference prices; availability, discounts and storage options may have changed. For clarity, “budget” here means under $500, with phones above that labeled as stretch options.

1. Google Pixel 9a: best budget smartphone overall
The Pixel 9a was the strongest all-round choice under $500 in 2025. Its Tensor G4 chip, dependable point-and-shoot photography, 6.3-inch adaptive 120Hz OLED screen and seven-year software-support commitment made it a better bet for many people than a cheaper phone with a shorter useful life. The rear system pairs a 48MP main camera with a 13MP ultrawide. The reason to choose it is not the megapixel count by itself: Google’s image processing is particularly useful for difficult light, portraits, HDR scenes and quick shots that need little adjustment. It is the best general-purpose camera pick here, though it does not have a dedicated telephoto lens. If optical-style zoom flexibility is the priority, consider the Nothing Phone 3a Pro instead.
The 5,100mAh battery supports 23W wired and 7.5W wireless charging. In Tom’s Guide’s battery test, the phone lasted 13 hours and 8 minutes; that is a result from that publication’s test, not a guarantee for every owner. Screen settings, signal strength, apps and use all affect endurance. Charging is not especially fast beside some rivals, so frequent top-ups may be a drawback.
Choose it if: you want the best balance of camera, speed, display and long support, or plan to keep your phone for several years. Skip it if: you need fast charging, a dedicated zoom camera, or a larger screen.

2. Samsung Galaxy A56 5G: best for a big display and sturdier build
The Galaxy A56 makes more sense than the Pixel if you want a roomy screen, Samsung’s software ecosystem and extra reassurance from its physical design. It has a 6.7-inch FHD+ Super AMOLED display, a metal frame, Gorilla Glass Victus+ and an IP67 dust- and water-resistance rating. Samsung’s product information lists six years of OS and security updates. The cited U.S. MSRP reference was about $499.99 for 128GB and $549.99 for 256GB, so the larger-storage version sits above the core budget ceiling. Samsung’s U.S. product page is the place to confirm current availability and configurations.
That protection is useful, not invulnerability: IP67 does not mean waterproof, and resistance can diminish with wear, damage or repairs. Liquid damage may not be covered by warranty. The A56’s six-year support promise is strong, but the Pixel 9a is the better pick for demanding performance and overall camera consistency at similar prices.
Choose it if: a large display, Samsung features, build materials and long support matter more than getting the strongest processor for the money. If you want Samsung and would rather spend less, consider the Galaxy A36 5G.

3. Nothing Phone 3a: best value for performance and design
At an approximate $379 U.S. reference price, the Phone 3a offered a persuasive middle ground: a Snapdragon 7s Gen 3 processor, a distinctive design and a flexible camera setup at less than the Pixel 9a’s launch price. It is a good fit for someone who wants a livelier alternative to a basic budget handset without paying close to $500. See Nothing’s Phone 3a page for product information.
The compromise is software longevity. Contemporary comparisons list three Android-version updates and six years of security updates. Those are different commitments: security patches can continue after major Android-version upgrades end. The Phone 3a’s U.S. carrier compatibility can also depend on the exact model and network, so verify the model number and supported bands with your carrier before buying, particularly for marketplace or imported listings.
Choose it if: you value performance and design and are comfortable with fewer Android-version upgrades than Google or Samsung promises. If camera zoom and battery testing matter more, the Phone 3a Pro is a distinct option; it was priced around $459 and is close enough to the Pixel that the Pixel remains the stronger general-purpose recommendation.

4. Samsung Galaxy A36 5G: best lower-cost Samsung
The A36 occupied a useful space around $399: Samsung’s AMOLED experience and six-year support commitment without the A56’s higher reference price. Its Snapdragon 6 Gen 3 is adequate for everyday use, but it offers less performance headroom than the Pixel 9a’s Tensor G4 or the Nothing Phone 3a’s Snapdragon 7s Gen 3. Comparative testing by Android Authority found the Pixel ahead for performance and graphics, with the Nothing also ahead of the A36 in processor testing.
That does not mean a benchmark alone predicts how every app or game will feel. Game settings, heat, software optimization and sustained workloads matter. The A36 is most compelling for a buyer already invested in Samsung services who wants a lower-cost phone with a long update commitment, rather than for a gamer or anyone prioritizing maximum performance per dollar. 5. Motorola Moto G Power (2025): best for a tight budget near $300
The Moto G Power (2025), with an approximate $299 reference price, is the practical choice when keeping the checkout price down matters more than camera quality, speed or long-term updates. Its MediaTek Dimensity 6300 and large-screen, battery-oriented approach suit ordinary tasks such as messaging, browsing and video. It is not a like-for-like alternative to the Pixel 9a: expect more modest performance and camera results.
Its support policy is the larger ownership caveat: two Android-version upgrades and three years of security updates. For a buyer who replaces phones often, that may be an acceptable trade for the lower price. For someone hoping to keep a phone four or five years, spending more on a model with longer support can be the better value. 6. Motorola Moto G (2025): best ultra-budget option
At an approximate $199 reference price, the Moto G is for basic use and buyers who genuinely cannot stretch further. Its low entry cost comes with weaker performance, cameras and memory/storage configurations than the higher picks, plus the same general support limit of two Android upgrades and three years of security updates. It is a reasonable short-term or light-use purchase, but not the recommendation for a person who expects demanding games, frequent photography or a long ownership period.

Before choosing it, compare the actual storage configuration with the price of a better-supported phone. A low price for a small-capacity model can become frustrating if photos, video and apps fill it quickly.
Stretch picks: when spending more may make sense
The iPhone 16e was a $599 stretch option, not a default budget winner. Consider it if you specifically want iOS, Apple’s ecosystem or the iPhone experience; its processor performance and resale appeal may matter to that buyer. The OnePlus 13R is another stretch-category candidate from the 2025 guide, but do not treat a higher price as automatically better value. An older flagship bought at a discount can also compete, provided it has a meaningful remaining update window, acceptable battery health, a reliable warranty and a clean carrier/activation status. On a used or refurbished device, verify the return policy, battery condition, lock status and repair history; water resistance may be compromised after damage or repair.
Best budget phone by what you care about
- Best overall, camera and software support: Google Pixel 9a.
- Best large screen and durability-oriented build: Samsung Galaxy A56 5G.
- Best value for performance and design around $400: Nothing Phone 3a.
- Best lower-cost Samsung with long support: Galaxy A36 5G.
- Best gaming performance under $500 in the cited comparison: Pixel 9a. This does not mean it wins every sustained gaming or emulator workload.
- Best battery result in the cited head-to-head test: Nothing Phone 3a Pro at 14 hours 33 minutes, versus 13 hours 8 minutes for the Pixel 9a in Tom’s Guide’s test. Results should only be compared within that methodology.
- Best near $300: Moto G Power (2025), if the short support window is acceptable.
- Best under $250: Moto G (2025), for basic use and low upfront cost.
- Best zoom flexibility: Nothing Phone 3a Pro, because it has a dedicated telephoto camera; that does not make it the best overall camera phone.
How to choose the right budget phone
1. Set a real ceiling, not a vague “cheap” target
Use these bands to make comparisons fair: under $250 is ultra-budget; $250–$399 is budget; $400–$500 is upper-budget or affordable midrange; $501–$650 is a stretch. A $599 phone may be worthwhile for a particular user, but it should not be presented as equivalent to a $199 phone.
2. Treat software support as part of the price
In the comparison here, the Pixel 9a had seven years of software and security updates; the Galaxy A36 and A56 had six years; Nothing’s Phone 3a models had three Android-version updates and six years of security updates; and the cited Moto G models had two Android upgrades and three years of security updates. Update schedules may vary by region, carrier and model. “Seven years” is a support commitment, not a guarantee that every future feature will work perfectly. Android-version upgrades, security patches, feature drops and app updates are not interchangeable.

A $200 phone replaced sooner can cost more over a long ownership period than a $400–$500 model kept longer—but that is a possibility, not a guaranteed saving. Battery wear, storage needs, repair cost and whether the device still suits you all affect the calculation.
3. Buy enough storage for the time you plan to keep it
For light use, 128GB is a sensible minimum. If you take many photos, record video, install large games or keep a phone for years, look for 256GB where affordable. Always compare the same storage tier: a 128GB model’s price is not directly comparable with a 256GB configuration.
4. Compare camera systems, not megapixel totals
Megapixels alone do not predict photo quality. Image processing, sensor and lens quality, stabilization, autofocus and software all matter. For reliable everyday stills, choose the Pixel 9a. For a dedicated telephoto option, look at the Phone 3a Pro, while recognizing that zoom is only one part of a camera system.

Buy the U.S. model from a source you trust and confirm its model number, LTE/5G bands, VoLTE support, eSIM needs and carrier certification with your carrier. Imported variants can lack bands or features. A carrier phone advertised as “free” may require a qualifying plan, a trade-in, 24–36 months of bill credits or repayment of remaining credits if you leave early. Compare the total plan cost and terms against an unlocked phone—not just the advertised monthly device payment.
6. Compare battery claims carefully
A large mAh figure does not guarantee longer real-world battery life. Screen size and refresh rate, processor efficiency, modem reception, background apps and usage all matter. Test results are useful only when you know whose test they came from; results using different procedures, refresh settings or network conditions are not directly interchangeable. Wireless charging and charging speed are separate conveniences from endurance.
