For a true online aquarium walk-through, start with the National Aquarium in Baltimore’s interactive 360° tour. If you would rather watch animals in motion, Monterey Bay Aquarium has a strong collection of live cams, while Georgia Aquarium offers a wider variety of animal feeds. These are different kinds of experiences—not interchangeable tours—so the best choice depends on whether you want to explore galleries, observe animals, or learn about the ocean.

Best true aquarium virtual tour: National Aquarium
The National Aquarium’s 360° virtual tour is the closest match to what most people mean by an aquarium virtual tour: you can navigate through views of its two main buildings and explore aquatic habitats and exhibits. The experience includes environments such as the Amazon River Forest and Indo-Pacific reef settings, alongside other habitats.
Choose this if you want a structured browse through a real aquarium, are previewing a future visit, or want to help a child get familiar with the setting before going. It is not a live digital replica: the tour does not recreate the building’s full scale, sounds or changing animal activity, and should not be taken as a guarantee that every current exhibit or animal is represented.

Best live aquarium webcams
Monterey Bay Aquarium: best for watching animals
Monterey Bay Aquarium’s live-cam hub is a better choice than a static walkthrough when the goal is to observe animals. Its listed feeds include sea otters, jellyfish, a kelp forest, sharks, open ocean, spider crabs and other habitats. A feed may show spontaneous behavior, but that also means sightings and activity are unpredictable.
Check the status and live hours on the individual camera page. Some streams use prerecorded footage outside live hours; for example, the Open Sea Cam page identifies its off-hours video as prerecorded. Feeds can also be offline or change as exhibits and operations change.

Georgia Aquarium: best variety of animal cams
Georgia Aquarium’s webcam collection includes feeds for Ocean Voyager, beluga whales, sharks, jellies, southern sea otters, sea lions, the Indo-Pacific Barrier Reef, African penguins and underwater puffins. For a large habitat view, try the Ocean Voyager webcam.

National Aquarium livestreams
The National Aquarium also offers livestreams. Its cameras operate during business hours, with previously recorded segments used after hours, according to the aquarium. Check the stream’s current label rather than assuming that moving footage is live.

Shedd Aquarium: best for digital storytelling
Shedd Aquarium’s Google Arts & Culture collection brings together selected virtual visits, stories and collection material, including behind-the-scenes and exterior tours. It is a useful option for learning about the institution, its animals and its work, but it should not be presented as a complete, current route through every Shedd gallery.

Google Arts & Culture: best for ocean exploration
Google Arts & Culture’s ocean experiences go beyond aquarium buildings. Depending on the experience, visitors can explore reefs, shipwrecks and underwater museums, view 3D marine-animal models, or try 360° ocean content. Its Expeditions collection includes educational explorations, while the VR tours page describes experiences whose device requirements may vary.
This is a good fit for students and teachers who want an ocean lesson rather than a tour of one facility. Access is generally online, but individual content may work differently across browsers, phones, apps and VR hardware; check the specific experience before planning a lesson around it.

At-home tour or paid VR? Know the difference
A browser-based 360° tour lets you look around and navigate digital views; it does not automatically require a VR headset. A webcam shows a camera’s view of an animal habitat, and it is not VR. Headset-based VR is a separate format, with its own device and venue requirements.
The National Aquarium’s Immotion Undersea Explorer is a paid, on-site experience in Baltimore, not an online tour for home use. The aquarium’s pages have shown different prices, including a member price, so confirm the current price and eligibility directly before buying. The venue also lists health restrictions for this particular experience, including warnings for people with photosensitive epilepsy, certain back or neck problems, heart conditions, high blood pressure, broken limbs or pregnancy. Follow the aquarium’s current guidance; these restrictions should not be generalized to every VR experience.

Tips for getting more from an online aquarium visit
- Pick the format first. Use a 360° tour to explore spaces, a webcam to observe animals, or an educational collection for a guided topic.
- Open the official hub. It is the best place to find current feeds, status notices and available experiences.
- Check whether a stream is live. Some aquariums use prerecorded footage outside operating hours, and individual cameras may be offline.
- Use a larger screen for navigation. A desktop or large tablet is often convenient for a 360° tour. Ordinary tours and webcams generally do not require a VR headset, but mobile controls and compatibility vary.

- Plan around access, not assumptions. Check current hours, device requirements and any account or app prompts on the selected experience before a group session.
