TuneIn is the best all-purpose starting point if you want a broad live-radio directory across phones, cars, and other devices. For U.S. local stations and radio mixed with playlists and podcasts, choose iHeartRadio; for discovery tools and recording, consider Audials Play. The best choice depends on the stations you actually listen to: a large directory does not guarantee that every stream is available in your area.

What counts as an internet-radio app?
Internet radio usually means listening to a live audio stream over the internet. That might be a terrestrial AM/FM station simulcast, a station that broadcasts only online, or an international news, sports, talk, music, or public-radio service. Some apps are directories that help you find and play streams; others emphasize their own stations, shows, or other programming.
That is different from an on-demand music service. A music app’s artist-radio feature can create a personalized stream without giving you a directory of live broadcasters. Podcasts may be bundled into radio apps too, but downloading a podcast does not make a live radio station available offline.

A broadcaster’s own app can be the better choice for its schedule, local reporting, or programs that an aggregator does not carry. Rights vary by station, program, and country, so a listing in a directory is not a promise that the stream will play everywhere.
How to choose an app
- Check your actual stations first. Search by call sign as well as station name and city. A station may lack a public stream, use its own app, have changed providers, or be subject to a rights blackout.
- Match the directory to your listening. For U.S. commercial radio, start with iHeartRadio. For a broad mix of stations and devices, start with TuneIn. For international discovery, compare the stations you want in more than one directory.
- Separate the kinds of advertising. An app can show banners or play its own pre-roll, while the broadcaster can include commercials in the station feed. Dynamic ads may also vary by location, device, or account. A paid tier may remove only the app-supplied ads.
- Check the car experience you need. Confirm official CarPlay or Android Auto support and whether your favorites are easy to start through the car interface or voice controls. Support for phone playback alone is not the same as a usable in-car interface.
- Be precise about offline and recording features. Offline podcast or music downloads are not offline live radio. Recording a live stream also does not grant permission to share or redistribute it.
- Consider accounts and privacy. Check whether account creation is needed for your features, whether location access is optional, and how personalization, notifications, and subscription renewal are handled.
TuneIn: best overall for a broad radio directory
What it offers
TuneIn says its free service includes more than 100,000 radio stations and 5.7 million podcasts. Those are TuneIn’s catalog figures, not an independent count, and they do not mean every station is available with the same stream quality or in every location. The service spans live radio and podcasts and supports web, mobile, smart-home products, and connected-car systems. Ads and paid options
TuneIn’s support documentation lists TuneIn Pro as a one-time $9.99 purchase. It removes TuneIn-provided pre-roll and visual display ads, not commercials already in a broadcaster’s stream. TuneIn Premium is a separate subscription that includes paid content such as selected commercial-free news or music stations, sports access, and audiobooks; do not confuse it with Pro’s app-ad removal. Who should choose it
Choose TuneIn if you want one starting point for many types of live radio, listen on several kinds of devices, or want radio in a supported car interface. If your priority is one local broadcaster, first compare TuneIn’s stream with the station’s own app. A wide catalog is useful, but it cannot guarantee a particular station’s rights or uptime.
iHeartRadio: best for U.S. local and commercial radio
What it offers
iHeartRadio combines live local AM/FM stations with artist radio, playlists, podcasts, and news. The company describes its free app as available on more than 200 platforms, including web, iOS, Android, Alexa, and automobiles. Paid features and limitations
iHeart describes Plus and All Access as adding features such as ad-free listening, on-demand music, replay, and offline downloads. Check the current plan terms at signup: offline downloads refer to supported on-demand content, not arbitrary live radio streams. Who should choose it
Choose iHeartRadio if the stations you follow are in its U.S. lineup, or you want live radio and music features in one service. For a particular local station, its official app may still offer the most direct route to the station’s own feed and schedule.
Audials Play: best for recording tools and discovery
What it offers
Audials says Audials Play has more than 150,000 stations worldwide and promotes discovery, recommendations, an equalizer, podcasts, and recording. Treat the station count as the vendor’s claim, not an independent audit. Audials also says a station can be recorded only when it outputs unencrypted audio and lacks effective protection against recording. Details are on the Audials Play page.
Recording caveats
Recording a stream is not the same as buying or downloading licensed music. Whether recording is lawful depends on local copyright rules and the purpose; sharing or redistributing recordings can raise separate rights issues. Before relying on the feature, check whether a recording stays inside the app or can be exported, whether scheduled recording runs in the background, and whether the stream’s interruptions and ads are captured.

Who should choose it
Audials may suit listeners who want more discovery controls or recording features than a basic player. If your goal is simply to start a local station quickly—or to create an offline music library—another app or a licensed on-demand service is a better fit.

When an official broadcaster app is the better choice
If you mostly listen to one public-radio network, station, or broadcaster, its own app or website may provide the most direct access to its stream and programs. NPR describes its apps and station streams as part of its digital distribution; individual station and program availability still depends on rights and location. See the NPR fact sheet. BBC Sounds, Audacy, and local station apps are other broadcaster-specific routes; check their current regional availability before relying on a particular program.
Broadcaster-specific apps fragment your listening across services, but that trade-off can be worthwhile when a program, schedule, or local feed matters more than having one universal directory.
Choose by listening situation
- Local AM/FM: Try the station’s call sign in iHeartRadio or TuneIn, then compare with its official app if the listing is missing or the stream will not play.
- International stations: Try TuneIn or Audials for broad directory searches; use Radio Garden if you want to browse on a map. Expect some country or program restrictions.
- Car listening: TuneIn advertises CarPlay and Android Auto support. Confirm the app appears in your particular car interface and test your favorites before driving.
- Fewer app-supplied ads: TuneIn Pro is the clearly documented option for removing TuneIn’s own pre-roll and display ads at the listed one-time price. It does not remove ads inside station feeds.
- News or sports: Compare the broadcaster’s own app with TuneIn’s paid content and iHeart’s local lineup; access can depend on rights and location.
- Public radio: Start with NPR or your local public-radio station’s own app if you want its programs and schedule, then use a directory as a backup.
- Smart speakers or TVs: TuneIn advertises support for smart-home products, Sonos, Bose, and Roku. Check the device’s own app catalog and account requirements for the specific integration.
Test stations before you pay
- List your five most-used stations, including call signs and the cities or countries they serve.
- Search each app by call sign, station name, and location. A directory can list a station whose stream is stale, offline, or restricted where you are.
- Play each station on Wi-Fi and, if you plan to listen on the move, cellular data. Check whether playback continues with the screen locked and resumes after a brief connection loss.
- Try the app in your car while parked, or confirm its listing in your vehicle’s CarPlay or Android Auto interface. Check that you can reach favorites without handling the phone while driving.
- Read the exact paid-plan description before subscribing. Identify whether it removes app ads, adds selected content, or unlocks on-demand downloads; do not assume it changes the station’s own stream.
- Check the price and renewal terms in the checkout or app store for your country and device. For example, TuneIn’s U.S. App Store listing says subscriptions automatically renew unless canceled at least 24 hours before the current period ends; consult the current listing for its terms.
Fix a station that will not play
- Play another station in the same app. If that works, the problem may be the station feed rather than your connection or the app.
- Switch between Wi-Fi and cellular data, then try the station again.
- Search the station by call sign or another directory listing; its stream provider may have changed.
- Try the broadcaster’s official website or app. If the stream is unavailable there too, it may be offline or restricted by rights.
- Close and reopen the app, then update it and your phone’s operating system if an update is available.
- If playback stops when the screen locks on Android, check the phone’s battery-optimization settings for the app.
- Remove and re-add a saved station only after checking for an alternate listing. Reinstalling repeatedly will not restore a stream that is down at the broadcaster’s end.
Manage data use and background playback
There is no reliable universal data-per-hour figure: usage depends on stream bitrate, codec, buffering, and how long you listen. Check your phone’s per-app cellular-data counter after an hour of listening to estimate your own use. Lower the stream quality if the app provides that setting, or restrict cellular access if you want playback on Wi-Fi only. Live radio generally needs an active connection; downloaded podcasts or supported on-demand content are the practical alternative for offline listening.
