For most buyers, AirPods Pro 3 are the best Apple earbuds of 2025—provided you are comfortable with an in-ear, sealed fit. Choose AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation if you want ANC without silicone ear tips, AirPods 4 for the lowest-cost Apple option, and AirPods Max only if you specifically want over-ear headphones.
This guide covers the US AirPods lineup available during 2025. AirPods Pro 3 went on sale on September 19, 2025, so recommendations changed during the year. Prices and retailer availability can change.

Buy AirPods Pro 3 if you want the strongest all-round combination of noise cancellation, fit options, workout features, battery life and hearing-health tools in Apple’s 2025 range. Apple launched them in the US at $249 on September 9, with store availability beginning September 19.

AirPods Pro 3 introduce a redesigned in-ear fit with five ear-tip sizes, including XXS. That extra-small option may help some users with smaller ears, but no earbud fit is universal. A sealed tip can improve passive isolation, bass consistency and stability; it can also feel warm, intrusive or pressure-heavy.
Apple says Pro 3’s ANC is up to twice as effective as AirPods Pro 2. That is Apple’s own testing claim, not an independent laboratory conclusion. In practical terms, the sealed in-ear design gives Pro 3 a fundamental advantage over open-fit AirPods 4 ANC because less outside sound reaches your ear in the first place.

- Heart-rate sensing during workouts and integration with the Fitness app for more than 50 workout types when paired with a compatible iPhone.
- IP57 resistance for sweat and water exposure; they are not waterproof and should not be used for swimming.
- Hearing Health features and Live Translation support, subject to compatible hardware, software, languages and regional availability.
Pro 3 are not the right choice if you dislike silicone tips or want to remain aware of your surroundings without using Transparency mode. Try Apple’s ear-tip fit test and multiple sizes before deciding that the model is unsuitable.

Best open-fit ANC earbuds: AirPods 4 with ANC
AirPods 4 with ANC cost $179 and are the best choice for buyers who want noise cancellation but dislike the sealed feeling of Pro earbuds. The open design rests at the entrance of the ear rather than sealing the canal with a silicone tip, which many people find more comfortable for long listening sessions.
The ANC version adds Active Noise Cancellation, Transparency mode, Adaptive Audio, Conversation Awareness, wireless charging and a charging-case speaker for Find My. It costs $50 more than the regular AirPods 4, making the upgrade worthwhile if you will use ANC or want wireless charging and improved case-finding features.

The trade-off is important: open-fit ANC cannot isolate sound as effectively as a sealed in-ear model. More traffic, voices and aircraft noise will get through, and bass response can vary more if the earbuds shift. The fit may also be less secure for some ears, especially during vigorous exercise.

Choose AirPods 4 ANC over Pro 3 when comfort and awareness matter more than maximum isolation. Do not buy them expecting Pro-level ANC.

Best budget option: AirPods 4
At $129, regular AirPods 4 are the sensible entry point for iPhone owners who mainly want music, calls, Siri, automatic device switching, USB-C charging and Apple’s basic ecosystem integration.
They do not include ANC, Transparency, Adaptive Audio, wireless charging or the case speaker included with the ANC model. If you commute, fly frequently or work in a noisy office, the extra $50 for AirPods 4 ANC is easier to justify. If you mostly listen at home or simply want inexpensive Apple earbuds, the base model avoids paying for features you may not use.

Best discounted alternative: AirPods Pro 2 with USB-C
AirPods Pro 2 remain relevant in 2025, particularly when a retailer discounts them substantially below the $249 Pro 3 price. They offer a sealed in-ear fit, strong ANC, multiple ear-tip sizes, wireless charging and Apple hearing features.
However, Pro 3 improve the proposition with a redesigned fit, an XXS tip, Apple’s stronger ANC claim, longer claimed ANC playback, heart-rate sensing, IP57 resistance and newer Hearing Health capabilities. As a rule of thumb, buy Pro 2 only when the discount is large enough to compensate for those differences—not when the price is close to Pro 3.
Prefer the USB-C version for a new purchase. Older Lightning versions may remain in retailer inventory, but they add another cable standard and are less convenient for a current Apple setup. Third-party availability, condition and warranty vary, so use authorized sellers and inspect marketplace listings carefully.

Best over-ear option: AirPods Max with USB-C
AirPods Max are the right purchase only if you specifically want Apple’s over-ear listening experience. They provide ANC, Transparency mode, Apple device integration and up to 20 hours of battery life with ANC enabled, with a $549 US price signal in Apple’s comparison materials.
The over-ear design can be preferable for people who dislike earbuds or want larger earcups for long listening sessions. But Max are expensive, heavier and less compact than AirPods earbuds. They are also a poor choice for running, hot-weather exercise or buyers who prioritize travel portability and value. The case and battery-management approach are less convenient than a conventional compact earbud case.

Apple’s 2025 newsroom archive also lists a lossless and ultra-low-latency audio update for AirPods Max. Wired lossless playback should not be assumed to work universally: verify the exact Max model, cable, device, operating-system and software requirements before buying for that purpose.
AirPods Max may be Apple’s best over-ear headphones, but they are not automatically the best AirPods for most buyers.

Fit is not a cosmetic detail. It changes isolation, perceived bass, ANC effectiveness, comfort and whether the earbuds stay in place. Independent comparisons from SoundGuys and RTINGS illustrate why the open-versus-sealed distinction matters.
AirPods Pro 3 versus AirPods Pro 2
Choose Pro 3 at or near the same $249 price if you want the newest fit, the XXS tip, Apple’s claimed ANC improvement, longer claimed ANC battery life, workout heart-rate sensing, IP57 resistance and the latest feature set. Choose Pro 2 when it is meaningfully cheaper, when its fit works better for your ears, or when you do not need Pro 3’s additions.
Neither model should be called universally “best” for comfort. Try different tips, use the fit test and consider whether a sealed canal bothers you. A comfortable AirPods 4 model can be a better real-world purchase than an uncomfortable Pro model.

- For commuting and flying: AirPods Pro 3, because the sealed fit and strongest claimed in-ear ANC are better suited to continuous background noise.
- For workouts: AirPods Pro 3 for the fit updates, IP57 resistance and heart-rate features. AirPods 4 ANC may suit people who dislike tips, but open earbuds can be less secure.
- For people who hate ear tips: AirPods 4 with ANC. Accept weaker isolation, or choose regular AirPods 4 if you do not need ANC.
- For smaller ears: Try Pro 3 first because it includes an XXS tip, but judge comfort individually.
- For hearing assistance: AirPods Pro 2 or Pro 3, subject to eligibility, region, compatible devices, current software and regulatory approval.
- For the lowest budget: AirPods 4 at $129 if ANC is unnecessary; AirPods 4 ANC at $179 if you expect to use noise cancellation.
- For Android: AirPods will work as Bluetooth earbuds, but automatic switching, Find My, deep settings integration, Spatial Audio workflows and some accessibility features are primarily Apple-ecosystem benefits. Compare platform-neutral alternatives before buying.
- For over-ear listening: AirPods Max, if you accept the $549 price, weight and reduced portability.
Hearing Health features: what to know
AirPods Pro 2 and Pro 3 support Hearing Test and Hearing Aid features when paired with compatible devices and current software. Apple describes Hearing Aid functionality for adults with perceived mild-to-moderate hearing impairment. Hearing Protection and speech-enhancement features may also depend on model, operating system and region.

These features are not a substitute for medical diagnosis or professional hearing care. Availability can differ by country, language, age and regulatory approval. If you suspect hearing loss, arrange an appropriate hearing evaluation rather than relying on earbuds alone.
Apple ecosystem advantages—and their limits
AirPods are especially compelling for iPhone, iPad and Mac owners because setup is simple and supported models can provide automatic switching, Find My integration, Siri and voice controls, Spatial Audio, Personalized Spatial Audio, Apple Watch support and Fitness integration.
Those benefits are not identical across every AirPods model or Apple device. Advanced functions can require specific hardware, firmware, operating-system versions and, for some features, Apple Intelligence-enabled devices. Check Apple’s feature comparison before buying for one particular capability.
On Android and other non-Apple devices, AirPods function as Bluetooth earbuds, but configuration and advanced features may be limited or inconvenient. Do not choose Pro or Max solely on the assumption that Apple integration will carry over to another platform.
Battery life and ownership costs
Apple rates AirPods 4 for up to five hours of listening, AirPods 4 ANC for up to four hours with ANC enabled, AirPods Pro 2 for commonly around six hours with ANC under the relevant configuration, AirPods Pro 3 for up to eight hours with ANC enabled, and AirPods Max for up to 20 hours with ANC enabled. Real results vary, and independent testing can produce lower figures under different conditions.
All AirPods use built-in batteries that gradually lose capacity. Consider AppleCare+ for expensive Pro or Max purchases if you travel often, frequently drop equipment or want additional service protection; compare its cost with the product price and your risk. For any discounted Pro 2 or Max listing, verify seller legitimacy, stock condition, warranty coverage and serial-number coverage. Marketplace discounts can involve opened products or counterfeits.
