AI is unlikely to eliminate the IT function. It is more likely to recompose it: assistants handle repetitive investigation, documentation and code generation; bounded agents execute approved workflows; people remain accountable for architecture, security, exceptions and business impact. The winning IT organization will combine technical depth with AI supervision, data discipline, risk judgment and strong communication.
What an augmented IT team actually is
An augmented team is an operating model, not merely a chatbot subscription. It combines human specialists with copilots embedded in existing tools, agents that perform bounded workflows, conventional automation, and controls for identity, observability, security and audit. Every workflow has an owner and an escalation path.
Three levels of augmentation
- Individual: drafting scripts, summarizing incidents, searching internal documentation, generating tests, translating technical explanations and writing ticket updates.
- Team: AI-assisted triage, shared incident summaries, runbook suggestions, knowledge-base maintenance, pull-request review and cross-tool search.
- Organization: agents coordinating multi-step requests, predictive capacity planning, compliance-evidence collection, self-service provisioning and continuous policy checks.
Keep the terms distinct. Automation performs a task with little human involvement. Augmentation accelerates a person who remains responsible. Delegation lets an agent plan and execute a bounded workflow under permissions, monitoring and escalation rules. A chat assistant and a production agent with authority to change infrastructure are not equivalent risk categories.
The World Economic Forum reports that, across surveyed work, 30% of tasks were performed through human–technology collaboration, compared with 47% mainly by humans and 22% mainly by technology; its conclusion emphasizes reskilling and collaboration rather than automation alone (World Economic Forum, 2025). Microsoft’s survey of 31,000 knowledge workers in 31 countries describes a move toward “human-agent teams,” but its findings are vendor-produced directional evidence, not a universal labor-market forecast (Microsoft Work Trend Index).

Which IT work is most exposed?
Exposure depends more on task characteristics than on job title. Repetitive, rules-based work with clean data and reversible outcomes is the easiest to augment. Ambiguous, high-impact decisions remain human-led, even when AI supplies analysis.
| Exposure | Typical tasks | What still requires people |
|---|---|---|
| High augmentation | Ticket routing, password and access requests, alert summaries, known-error identification, configuration comparison, documentation, routine SQL and infrastructure-as-code, test generation, asset reports, first-pass vulnerability explanations and standard change requests | Verification, exceptions, permissions and customer or business impact |
| Medium exposure | Root-cause analysis, network troubleshooting, cloud-cost optimization, capacity planning, architecture options, security investigations, vendor evaluation and major-incident coordination | Context, competing priorities, evidence quality and accountability |
| Lower substitutability | Enterprise architecture, risk acceptance, crisis leadership, negotiation, safety-critical approvals, ambiguous problem framing, organizational change and controls for novel threats | Judgment, trust, leadership and decisions where business context outweighs pattern matching |
“Lower substitutability” does not mean unchanged. These roles become more strategic and require enough AI literacy to challenge outputs and design safe workflows.
How individual IT roles are changing
Service-desk analysts
AI can classify and route tickets, find relevant knowledge, detect duplicates, suggest replies, generate troubleshooting checklists and resolve tightly bounded requests. Analysts gain value by showing empathy, handling ambiguity, detecting social engineering, deciding when to escalate and improving the knowledge base. The essential new competency is knowing when not to trust a generated resolution.
System administrators
Assistants can draft commands and scripts, summarize patch impact, compare configurations, detect drift and run approved remediation. Administrators must define safe boundaries, manage permissions, design rollback procedures and validate changes across dependencies.

Network engineers
Natural-language telemetry queries, event correlation, configuration comparison, capacity forecasts and change-plan drafts reduce investigation time. Engineers still design resilient topologies, test assumptions, handle unusual failure modes, control blast radius and account for vendor-specific behavior.
Security operations analysts
AI can enrich alerts, summarize threat intelligence, draft detection rules, prioritize cases, analyze phishing and build investigation timelines. Analysts remain responsible for threat hunting, adversarial thinking, identity and privilege analysis, containment and judging prompt-injection or model-manipulation risks. The Cisco-led AI Workforce Consortium reported rising demand for AI security and responsible-AI skills in its 2025 analysis (Cisco-led AI Workforce Consortium).
Developers and DevOps engineers
Code completion, refactoring, test generation, documentation, pull-request summaries, review assistance and CI/CD troubleshooting can accelerate delivery. Requirements quality, system design, secure coding, testing strategy, dependency and license judgment, code ownership and production understanding remain human responsibilities. Faster generation can increase review, testing and maintenance work if controls do not improve with it.
Architects and technology leaders
Their remit expands from selecting isolated tools to designing human-agent workflows, assigning responsibility, setting data-access boundaries and approval thresholds, measuring quality and business outcomes, building reusable AI patterns and planning workforce transitions. Microsoft’s proposed “human-agent ratio” is a useful framing device, not an established universal metric.
The skill stack that remains durable
Technical AI literacy
IT professionals should understand model limits, hallucination and omission, context windows, retrieval, tool use, agent planning, model selection, basic evaluation, data residency, retention, prompt injection and leakage. Few need to train a foundation model.

Automation and orchestration
Workflow design, APIs, webhooks, infrastructure as code, event-driven systems, runbook automation, human approval gates, rollback or compensation logic, queues and exception handling turn a clever answer into a dependable service.
Evaluation and quality assurance
Measure accuracy, completeness, grounding, false positives and negatives, latency, cost per task, security behavior, escalation quality, user satisfaction and change-failure rate with repeatable test sets.
Security and governance
Least privilege, secrets management, vendor and model risk assessment, auditability, access reviews, prompt-injection defenses, sensitive-data handling, approval design and AI incident response are core operational skills.
Human capabilities
Problem framing, communication, negotiation, empathy, teaching, leadership, ethical reasoning, cross-functional collaboration and comfort with ambiguity become more valuable. The WEF identifies reskilling and upskilling existing employees as leading anticipated responses to AI-driven change (WEF workforce strategies).

Microsoft specifically lists AI trainers, data specialists, security specialists, AI-agent specialists, ROI analysts and AI strategists among roles organizations are considering; these are survey labels, not a definitive occupational taxonomy (Microsoft Work Trend Index 2025). The Cisco-led analysis covered 50 ICT and specialized-support roles and reported AI technical skills in 78% of them, with reported growth in AI security (+298%), foundation-model adaptation (+267%), responsible AI (+256%) and multi-agent systems (+245%). Those figures describe that consortium’s analyzed data, not every IT job.

1. Inventory the work
Map ticket volumes, resolution time, change failure, escalation patterns, documentation gaps, manual evidence collection and costly workflows. Ask which workflow is repetitive, well understood and safe to bound—not where an agent can be placed first.
2. Classify risk
- Low-impact information
- Internal productivity
- Reversible operational action
- Security-sensitive action
- Customer-impacting action
- Irreversible or regulated decision
Raise approval, testing, logging and review requirements as impact rises.
3. Start assistively
Pilot ticket summaries, knowledge search, response drafts, incident timelines, documentation, test creation and read-only log analysis. These produce evidence without granting production write access.

4. Add bounded execution
After evaluation, permit narrowly scoped actions such as updating tickets, running approved diagnostics, triggering preauthorized workflows, creating pull requests, applying low-risk changes or provisioning standard resources. Use explicit permissions, time limits, action logs and rollback.
5. Redesign roles and metrics
Track resolution quality, reopen rates, escalation accuracy, change-failure rate, security incidents, review time, cost per completed workflow, user satisfaction, time returned to higher-value work and employee skill growth. Automation count alone is not success.
What not to automate first
- Privilege changes and production firewall modifications
- Destructive database operations
- Customer-impacting outage actions
- Security containment without review
- Regulated or irreversible decisions
Keep humans in the approval loop for critical infrastructure and public services. In regulated environments, data residency, retention, explainability, auditability and contracts can outweigh convenience. Air-gapped teams may need local models or conventional automation. Legacy systems still require dependency discovery and stable interfaces; AI cannot create missing APIs. Small teams should start with narrow copilots and administrative controls rather than buying an oversized platform.
Failure modes to design out
- Hallucinated commands or settings and incorrect diagnoses from incomplete telemetry
- Stale documentation, prompt injection in tickets or repositories, secret exposure and excessive permissions
- Unapproved changes, automation loops, duplicate agent actions and weak audit trails
- AI code that passes superficial tests but violates business logic
- Vendor lock-in, unpredictable model or pricing changes and no exit plan
- Deskilling, blind acceptance of recommendations and no rollback path
- Optimizing ticket closure while worsening user outcomes

| Product | Best fit | Pricing or product signal | Watch-outs |
|---|---|---|---|
| GitHub Copilot | Developer, platform and DevOps teams using GitHub | GitHub lists Business at $19/user/month, Enterprise at $39/user/month, Pro at $10/month and Pro+ at $39/month. Enterprise requires GitHub Enterprise Cloud. One extra-use AI credit is stated as $0.01. | Needs code/repository governance, review discipline and a GitHub-centered workflow. Verify current plans. |
| Atlassian Rovo Dev | Teams centered on Jira, Bitbucket, Confluence or Jira Service Management | Standard is listed at $20/developer/month with 2,000 credits; extra usage is listed at $0.01/credit. | Less compelling for organizations standardized elsewhere. |
| ServiceNow Now Assist for ITOM | Large ServiceNow ITSM and ITOM programs | Documentation describes Foundation, Advanced and Prime AI Platform tiers; public list pricing was not stated. | Review data transfer, residency and third-party cloud terms; enterprise sales engagement is typical. |
| Microsoft 365 Copilot | Organizations using Microsoft 365, Teams, SharePoint, Azure, Power Platform and Microsoft identity | An official pricing document showed $30/user/month under its listed annual structure; promotions, dates and seat terms require reconfirmation. | Broad productivity integration may not replace a specialized IT operations platform; permissions must be mature. |
GitHub Copilot is the natural developer-centric choice; Rovo Dev fits Atlassian-centered work; Now Assist warrants evaluation for large ServiceNow estates; Microsoft 365 Copilot is strongest when identity, documents and collaboration already live in Microsoft’s ecosystem. Licensing is only part of total cost: include integration, data cleanup, security review, training, evaluation, oversight, usage charges, incident response and vendor exit costs.
The durable IT professional
The future-proof profile is neither a prompt specialist nor a person who avoids AI. It is someone who can define the real problem, connect systems and context, supervise agents, validate outputs, protect permissions, communicate trade-offs and own the result when automation fails. Organizations that preserve foundational learning, make accountability explicit and measure quality—not just volume—will gain the benefits of AI without trading away reliability.
