The 2025 Echo Show 8 can make an Alexa smart home simpler: it combines voice control, an 8.7-inch touchscreen and hubs for many compatible Zigbee, Matter and Thread devices. That can mean fewer boxes and an easy way to check cameras or switch off lights. It does not remove Wi-Fi and account setup, every manufacturer app, or Amazon’s cloud and privacy trade-offs.
It is a strong fit for an Alexa-first household that will use the screen and accepts a camera in the room. It is not a universal smart-home controller, and it is not the right choice for everyone who wants less hassle.
What “smart-home hassle” means here
A smart home can become a collection of separate hubs, apps, accounts and pairing steps. Even after setup, a device may appear online but fail to respond; routines can require configuration; and a simple task may still mean reaching for a phone. A display adds another consideration: its camera, microphones, privacy controls and on-screen content.
The Echo Show 8 addresses some of that friction by putting an Alexa assistant, touchscreen and selected smart-home radios in one tabletop device. It does not make every brand compatible, eliminate all apps, or guarantee that services keep working when a network or cloud service has a problem.

What the 2025 Echo Show 8 includes
Amazon identifies this model in its developer documentation as the Echo Show 8 (3rd Gen, 2025 release). Some third-party coverage calls it the “4th Gen,” so the release year is the clearest way to distinguish it. The device combines Alexa, an 8.7-inch HD touchscreen, a 13-megapixel camera, media and video calling, and a smart-home dashboard. Amazon also describes an upgraded processor and Omnisense sensor platform for this release; availability and behavior of individual features can vary by software, account and region. The practical attraction is not just that the screen can answer questions. It can act as a shared, visible control point for lights, plugs, sensors, locks, thermostats and cameras—provided the particular accessories and functions are supported.
How the built-in hub can reduce clutter
The 2025 Show 8 supports Zigbee and Matter, and it can act as a Thread Border Router. Those are different technologies, not three names for the same kind of connection. For many compatible devices, its built-in radios can spare you a separate hub or bridge.

Zigbee: useful for compatible accessories
Zigbee is used by many lights, plugs, switches, sensors and locks. Amazon lists the 2025 Echo Show 8 among Echo devices with a built-in Zigbee hub; compatible accessories can often be added by asking Alexa to discover devices. But the Zigbee label alone does not guarantee that Alexa exposes every feature of a particular product. Check the accessory’s exact compatibility and required bridge before buying. Amazon’s Zigbee support documentation lists supported Echo hubs and compatibility information.
Matter: a common standard, not a guarantee of every feature
Matter is intended to help supported smart-home devices work across platforms. Some Matter devices can connect directly to Alexa without a separate manufacturer skill, and Amazon supports Matter over Wi-Fi as well as Matter over Thread. Its documented categories include lights, plugs, sensors, locks, thermostats, fans, air purifiers, appliances and robot vacuums. Support still depends on the device category, firmware and the capabilities Alexa exposes; a manufacturer app may remain necessary for setup or advanced features. Thread: a network that needs a border router
Thread is a low-power mesh network. It is not Matter itself: Matter is a device interoperability standard, and Thread is one network Matter devices can use. A Matter-over-Thread accessory needs a Thread Border Router to join an IP network. The 2025 Show 8 can fill that role in an Alexa setup, potentially avoiding another Thread-capable hub. What setup actually involves
Amazon’s first-run path is straightforward, but it still involves an Amazon account, Wi-Fi and the Alexa app. Plug in the display and scan the QR code shown on-screen; the Alexa app guides setup and installs software updates. Then add accessories and organize them so voice commands are clear. Amazon’s setup guide describes the QR-code process.

- Continue in the Alexa app, sign in to the Amazon account, connect the device to Wi-Fi and allow software updates to finish.
- Choose its room and review household settings, voice profiles and permissions that matter to your home.
- Add compatible accessories through Alexa discovery or the accessory’s required app. Follow the specific product’s pairing instructions.
- Give devices distinct names, then group related ones—for example, “Kitchen lights” or “Downstairs.”
- Test simple voice commands before building routines with several devices or conditions.
Some accessories need their own app, account linking or firmware update before Alexa can find them. A Matter device may require its setup code or QR code, and may already be commissioned to another smart-home platform. Router settings, weak Wi-Fi, multiple isolated networks and household permissions can also complicate pairing. The display makes control more visible; it does not make those dependencies disappear.
If Alexa cannot find an accessory
- Check that the Echo and phone are on the intended network, and that the accessory is powered on and in pairing mode.
- Update the manufacturer app and accessory firmware, then check whether the device is already paired to another hub or Matter fabric.
- Try “Alexa, discover my devices” and remove duplicate or obsolete device names if Alexa created more than one entry.
- Reboot the Echo and accessory. Reset the accessory only as a last resort, since a reset may erase its existing configuration.
These are checks, not guaranteed fixes: the right recovery depends on the product, protocol and network.
Where a screen makes everyday control easier
Voice is handy when your hands are busy: “Alexa, turn off the kitchen lights” or “Alexa, set a 12-minute timer.” A touchscreen offers a fallback for people who prefer tapping, and a shared display can be easier for household members than opening an app on one person’s phone.

Amazon describes a full-screen smart-home dashboard with device groups, favorite controls, camera feeds and Home, Away and Night modes. That is glanceable control: you can tap a light or view a camera without navigating through a phone. A routine is a separate step. Setting up a dependable “Good night” sequence, for example, may involve choosing devices, actions, timing and conditions. The dashboard does not make that configuration automatic.
- Kitchen: Set timers, view cooking information or follow a recipe hands-free.
- Entryway: Ask Alexa to show a compatible front-door camera feed.
- Common areas: Use groups for lights and plugs, or display reminders, calendar information, weather, photos, music or news.
- Household communication: Make video calls from a stationary screen or use visual controls that are easier to see at a glance.
These uses depend on supported devices, services, settings and account configuration. A compatible camera being online does not guarantee its feed will always be available through Alexa.
Alexa+ may simplify commands, not the underlying setup
Alexa+ is Amazon’s more conversational assistant experience. Amazon describes natural-language requests, follow-up conversations, personalization, smart-home control for supported devices and integrations with selected services. Those capabilities could make interaction easier for someone who finds rigid voice commands frustrating.
Conversational control does not change whether an accessory is compatible, whether it needs a manufacturer account, or whether network permissions are configured correctly. Amazon says Alexa+ is available through compatible Echo Show devices, the Alexa app and Alexa.com, with features and availability varying by account and region. Check Amazon’s current Alexa+ information for applicable U.S. terms and access; availability, feature access and any pricing terms can change.
Privacy, camera controls and screen clutter
The Echo Show 8 has microphones and a 13-megapixel camera. Amazon’s product listing describes electronic microphone and camera disable controls, but independent coverage flags that the 2025 model lacks a physical camera shutter. Turning off a camera electronically is not the same as placing a visible mechanical barrier over it. Review the camera and microphone controls, account privacy settings and any personalization enrollment, such as Visual ID, separately; one control does not stand in for every privacy choice. A display may also show recommendations or shopping prompts. The home-screen options depend on the software version, so do not assume every promotional element can be removed. If a quiet, private screen is a priority, consider whether the interface and room placement will suit you before buying.

Some supported Matter connections can operate locally, which Amazon says can reduce latency and improve reliability, including local control in some cases when internet or cloud infrastructure is unavailable. Zigbee devices may also communicate locally through the built-in hub for supported functions. But Alexa voice processing, remote access, media, account integrations and some routines can depend on the internet, Alexa services or a manufacturer’s cloud. The exact behavior varies by accessory and command. Amazon’s Matter documentation and smart-home architecture overview explain the distinction; neither supports a blanket promise that the Echo Show works without internet.
How it compares with other ways to control a home

No option is automatically simpler for every household. Existing accounts, devices and preferred voice assistant usually matter more than a feature checklist. A household combining Apple, Google and Alexa may have more account and routine management than one that settles on a primary platform.
Who should buy the 2025 Echo Show 8?
Buy it if
- Alexa is already the assistant you prefer, or you are deliberately starting an Alexa-first setup.
- You want voice and touchscreen controls in a shared kitchen or common area.
- You plan to use compatible Matter, Thread or Zigbee accessories and value having their hub functions in the display.
- You will use the screen for camera feeds, timers, recipes, calls or household information—not just occasional smart-home settings.
- You accept microphones, a camera with electronic controls rather than a physical shutter, and some dependence on Amazon services.
Skip it if
- You require a physical camera shutter, want no camera, or do not want a camera in the room.
- Your home is built around Apple Home or Google Home and you would rather keep its controls native to that platform.
- You only need basic voice control; a speaker without a screen may be a better fit.
- You already have a tablet that covers the display and control uses you want.
- You need highly specialized, brand-agnostic automation or expect every accessory to work without its manufacturer app.
- You want local-only operation, minimal cloud reliance, or a screen free of Amazon-oriented content.
Before buying, check the current U.S. price and any bundle contents on Amazon’s Echo Show 8 page. The $149.99 figure in Amazon’s 2023 announcement was the launch price of the then-new model, not a verified current price. If you want a stand, confirm compatibility with the 2025 release and its current price on the accessories page. Check Alexa+ access and terms separately rather than assuming they are included in a particular plan.
