Google Search has hidden visual effects, interactive controls, mini-experiences, and simulations that appear when you enter a particular phrase. The 16 examples below come from Google Search effects documented by Gizmodo’s March 6, 2023 list.
Availability is not guaranteed today. Google can retire promotional, seasonal, or regional Easter eggs without notice, and the supplied source does not establish that every effect remains live in September 2026. Treat each item as either a documented Google Search effect or a historical trigger to try—not a promise that it will work on every browser, device, or country domain.
How to try Google Search animations
- Open Google Search in a current browser.
- Enter the phrase exactly as shown, without quotation marks.
- Press Enter or select Search.
- Look for a page-wide animation, a control below the results, an icon in a Knowledge Panel, or an object near the Google logo.
The effects below are grouped by the kind of experience they provide. “Reported” means the behavior was documented in the original coverage but was not independently confirmed here as still available in September 2026.

1. do a barrel roll
What happens: The results page reportedly rotates through a 360-degree spin.

2. DVD screensaver
What happens: The Google logo reportedly moves around the page like the classic bouncing DVD logo.

3. Google in 1998
What happens: Search results are restyled to resemble an early version of Google’s interface.
Interaction: None required. This is a visual recreation, not necessarily an exact archival copy of the 1998 search engine.
Status: Reported historical-interface effect; current availability is unconfirmed.
4. RRR
What happens: A horse reportedly chases a motorcycle beneath the search bar.
Interaction: The animation was described as automatic.
Status: A film-related promotional effect reported in the original coverage and especially vulnerable to retirement.

5. The Last of Us
What happens: A red mushroom button reportedly appears near the bottom of the page. Clicking it repeatedly causes cordyceps-like growth to spread across the screen.

What happens: A Grogu control reportedly lets the character use the Force to rearrange parts of the results page.
Interaction: Click the Grogu control or animation if it appears.

7. BTS
What happens: A purple heart balloon reportedly appears near the top of the page. Clicking it releases purple balloons that can be popped.
Interaction: Click the heart, then click the balloons.
Status: Artist-related promotional feature; current availability is unconfirmed.
8. LGBTQ+
What happens: A heart bearing a Pride flag reportedly appears. Clicking it sends Pride celebrants across the bottom of the page.
Interaction: Click the heart when it is displayed.
Status: Reported Pride-themed effect that may be seasonal, regional, or retired.
9. cherry blossom
What happens: A flower reportedly appears beside the name in the Knowledge Panel. Clicking it releases falling petals.

10. drop bear
What happens: A road sign reportedly appears. Clicking it makes a drop bear fall down the page.
Interaction: Click the sign.
Status: Reported search-result decoration. A drop bear is an Australian folklore creature, not a real animal.
11. googly eyes
What happens: Googly eyes reportedly appear on the Google logo.
Interaction: The source does not establish a separate click action, so do not expect one.
Status: Reported visual effect; device and browser compatibility are unconfirmed.
Science, history, and simulation
12. NASA DART Mission
What happens: A small spacecraft reportedly crosses the page and crashes, leaving the results tilted.
Interaction: The effect was described as automatic.
Status: DART-era promotional Easter egg, not a permanent NASA feature. Current availability is unconfirmed.

14. Conway’s Game of Life
What happens: A smaller version of the cellular-automaton simulation reportedly appears beside the results and runs within the page.
Interaction: It is a simulation rather than a conventional game or one-shot animation.
Status: Reported educational-style feature; current availability is unconfirmed.

15. Cha Cha Slide
What happens: Controls reportedly appear beside the song result and animate the page through the dance instructions.
Interaction: Click the controls beside the song title.
Status: Reported music-related effect. Audio may behave differently depending on browser autoplay rules, device settings, or whether the page is muted.
16. Festivus
What happens: An apparently endless Festivus pole reportedly stretches across the results page.

Status: Seasonal or intermittent feature, so it may be unavailable outside the relevant period.

Failure to see an animation does not necessarily mean the search phrase is wrong. Try these steps:
- Confirm the spelling and search without quotation marks.
- Try Google.com in a desktop browser.
- Open a private or incognito window.
- Temporarily disable ad blockers, script blockers, privacy extensions, or enterprise browser controls.
- Reload the page once, then try another browser or device.
- For Knowledge Panel effects, check whether Google has returned the expected entity and panel.
- For seasonal or promotional effects, try again during the relevant holiday, event, or campaign period.
These steps can help identify a local loading or layout problem, but they cannot restore an Easter egg that Google has retired. Google may also change the result page based on country, language, date, device, account state, screen width, or browser.

Are these all really animations?
Not exactly. The list includes several different types of Google Search experiences:
- Visual transformations:
do a barrel roll,Google in 1998,DVD screensaver, andChicxulub. - Interactive animations:
The Last of Us,Grogu,BTS,LGBTQ+,cherry blossom,drop bear,googly eyes, andRRR. - Games or simulations:
Cha Cha SlideandConway’s Game of Life.
They are included because the effect is triggered directly by a Google Search query. Ordinary Google Doodles, browser animations, and third-party pages that imitate Google’s Easter eggs are separate categories.
Why Google animations disappear
Google Search effects are not a permanent catalog. A tie-in for a television show, film, artist, holiday, cultural event, or scientific mission may be removed when its promotion ends. Even general-purpose effects can be changed or suppressed as Google redesigns Search.
Old screenshots and listicles therefore prove that an effect existed at the time they were published, not that it still works everywhere today. The historical source for this list was published on March 6, 2023; its descriptions should be read in that context.

When an official effect is unavailable, Google’s Doodle archive or an official game hosted by its original creator may offer a legitimate alternative. A third-party Easter-egg collection is not evidence that the original Google Search feature remains active.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do Google Search animations work on phones?
Some may, but availability and control placement can differ on mobile. A desktop browser is the better fallback when a phone shows ordinary results.
Are these official Google features?
The entries described here are reported effects embedded in Google Search, based on the linked coverage. Third-party pages that recreate similar effects are separate and are not proof that the official versions remain available.

Are Google Doodles the same as Search animations?
No. A Google Doodle is a themed change to Google’s homepage logo or artwork. The effects here are triggered by entering a specific search query.
