Thales announced the Combat Digital Platform (CDP) on June 9, 2022, as a cybersecure, AI-enabled tactical command-and-control and mission-system layer for land forces. Its purpose is to connect command posts, vehicles, drones, dismounted soldiers, sensors and effectors so information can be collected, fused and shared quickly enough to support coordinated action.
The announcement describes a capability proposition built around a combat-cloud architecture, software-defined radios, satellite communications and LTE. It is not, however, a public product datasheet: Thales has not published a standard configuration, price, complete performance specification, installation count or full security-assurance record.
What “collaborative combat” means
Collaborative combat is the networking of platforms, sensors, command nodes and people so a force can share information and effects instead of leaving each vehicle or unit with an isolated view. In Thales’s description, the soldier remains central: the system operates under human supervision and supports decisions rather than independently deciding to use lethal force.

Modern formations generate data from more actors and sensors than operators can manually process. The useful information must reach the right person, securely and quickly, even when networks are congested, disrupted or shared with allies.

Thales’s stated objectives include shortening decision cycles, preserving information superiority in complex environments, connecting headquarters to frontline users and improving interoperability across joint and coalition operations.
How the Combat Digital Platform is intended to work
The public material supports this conceptual flow, rather than a published system diagram:
- Collect: receive information from sensors, vehicles, drones, soldiers and weapon systems.
- Connect: move data over available tactical networks, software-defined radios, satellite links and LTE.
- Fuse: combine reports into a more coherent tactical picture and reduce duplication.
- Analyse: apply data-processing methods and AI to support interpretation and prioritisation.
- Share: distribute relevant information between command levels and units.
- Support decisions: help operators plan missions and conduct engagements.
- Coordinate action: support observation, protection, manoeuvre and assault functions.
That makes the CDP best understood as a tactical C4I and mission-management layer: a digital backbone connecting people, networks, platforms and effectors, rather than a single radio, map display or weapon.

Technology stack and connectivity
Combat-cloud architecture
A combat cloud is the architectural idea of making data and applications available across distributed tactical nodes. In a land formation, that can mean a command centre, a vehicle computer, an edge device or a dismounted user. The architecture must still work when links are intermittent, bandwidth is limited and some nodes are disconnected.
Multiple communications paths
Thales says the CDP can combine software-defined radios, satellite communications and LTE with tactical networks and existing command systems. This network flexibility is an intended design feature, not proof of a particular throughput, latency, range or resilience level. The 2022 release does not identify radio models, encryption suites, cloud topology or results from jamming and node-loss tests.
Integration with existing C2
Thales presents the platform as able to support conventional tactical command and battle-management systems used by joint forces and alliance partners, with reference to relevant NATO standards. That points to integration or augmentation rather than a requirement to discard every existing C2 system; it does not amount to blanket NATO certification.

What AI contributes
In the documented CDP description, AI is for processing, analytics, data fusion and decision support. Likely functions include handling large volumes of tactical data, correlating reports from different sensors, highlighting significant information and reducing cognitive workload while operators maintain authority.
Recommended Free Tools
Thales’s later AI material describes optimisation algorithms, multi-agent distributed decision-making and hybrid AI for collaborative combat and robotics. It reports that a Thales-led team operated 19 drones and robots with three operators during the French CoHoMa II challenge in May 2023. That is evidence of a related demonstrated capability, not proof that every CDP deployment has that exact number of systems or level of autonomy.
From observation to coordinated action
Collaborative observation
Information from distributed sensors and units can be combined into a shared tactical picture, helping commanders and crews see beyond the limits of one platform.

Protection
Shared warnings and faster distribution of relevant tracks can support force protection. The public announcement supplies no independent measure of warning time, detection accuracy or survivability improvement.
Manoeuvre
Common information and mission coordination are intended to help units plan and adjust movement across command levels.

SCORPION and the French Army context
About 50 Thales experts worked with end users to design, develop and evaluate the platform, drawing on experience from France’s SCORPION programme to improve the user experience under battlefield conditions. This is a development link, not evidence that every SCORPION vehicle carries the CDP.
Thales’s 2024 corporate reporting records SCORPION progress, including deliveries by 2024 of 760 GRIFFON and 100 JAGUAR vehicles to France’s defence procurement agency. Those figures describe programme vehicle deliveries, not CDP installation numbers. See the 2024 Universal Registration Document.
Robotics, OpenDRobotics and the platform’s evolution
More recent Thales positioning places the CDP alongside OpenDRobotics, an initiative intended to make it easier to integrate drones and robots through NATO-approved standards. Thales also describes robotics, unmanned aerial vehicles and unmanned ground vehicles operating within a single mission system. These references suggest an expanding mission-management foundation, while not proving that every later robotics feature was present in the 2022 baseline.
A Novadem partner post says its NX70 drone was coupled with the CDP at Eurosatory 2026. That is exhibition evidence reported by a partner, not proof of operational deployment or a production contract: Novadem on LinkedIn.

Cybersecurity: design intent versus assurance
Thales calls the platform cybersecure and intends it to share data securely across force levels and allied systems. Public material does not disclose its security architecture, accreditation level, encryption algorithms, key-management arrangements, zero-trust implementation, cyber-resilience test method or behaviour after compromise. “Cybersecure” should therefore be read as Thales’s design and marketing claim, not as an independently verified certification.
Benefits and trade-offs
- Potential benefits: better situational awareness, faster information exchange, quicker mission preparation, improved sensor-to-effector coordination, lower operator workload and more flexible use of crewed and uncrewed systems.
- Connectivity versus exposure: more links can improve coordination while expanding the electromagnetic and cyber attack surface.
- Automation versus trust: AI recommendations need confidence indicators, explainability and an operator override.
- Fusion versus overload: a common picture is useful only if stale, duplicated or low-confidence data are filtered.
- Interoperability versus complexity: supporting many national systems and radios increases integration and testing demands.
- Cloud architecture versus disruption: a combat cloud must retain useful edge and disconnected modes when bandwidth disappears.
- Software speed versus assurance: frequent updates can improve capability but complicate certification and configuration control.
Questions a defence customer should ask
- Which existing C2, radio, sensor and battle-management systems are integrated, and through what open interfaces?
- Which NATO and national data standards are implemented, and what interoperability tests have been accepted?
- What security accreditation, cryptographic controls and key-management model apply to each classification and coalition environment?
- How does the system perform under jamming, spoofing, cyberattack, satellite loss, node loss and intermittent bandwidth?
- What remains available offline, at the tactical edge or in a disconnected mode?
- How are confidence, provenance, time synchronisation and conflicting sensor reports shown to operators?
- What evidence comes from live exercises, acceptance tests or operational deployments?
- How are vehicles, drones, robots and weapons integrated without creating unsafe or unauthorised autonomy?
- Who owns the software, data, interfaces and cryptographic material, and how portable is the system between vendors?
- What are the training, maintenance, update and long-term sustainment obligations?
Bottom line
The Combat Digital Platform is best understood as Thales’s cybersecure, AI-enabled tactical mission and command-and-control layer for connecting land-force people, sensors, vehicles, networks and effectors. Its significance is integration: turning many disconnected data sources into coordinated human decisions. The public record establishes the intended architecture and direction of development, but not a complete fielded product specification, price, security accreditation or deployment scale.
