Yes, a Tesla can become difficult to exit if its low-voltage electrical system fails and the ordinary electronic door control stops working. Tesla provides mechanical releases, but their locations and procedures vary by model, production period and seat. Some are not obvious, and using one may damage a window or trim. Reported incidents make this a genuine usability concern; the available evidence does not establish how often it happens or prove that Tesla has an unusually high entrapment rate.
What “locked inside” can mean
The phrase can describe several different situations: a door that is physically locked, an electronic interior button that does not respond, a person who cannot find the mechanical release, a rear passenger facing a less accessible release, or a child who cannot open a door because child locks are enabled. Those situations are not interchangeable. In particular, a power-related failure of the normal door control does not necessarily mean the door has no mechanical way to open.
Tesla’s manuals warn that the normal interior door button may not work if the vehicle has no low-voltage power. The front and rear emergency procedures vary, so check the manual for the exact car rather than relying on a generic video or diagram. Why a power failure can affect the doors
Teslas use electronic controls for ordinary door operation. The high-voltage battery that powers the motor and the low-voltage system that runs many everyday functions are distinct. A problem with low-voltage power can therefore affect electronic door controls even if the issue is not simply that the traction battery is empty. The precise behavior depends on the fault and vehicle configuration; not every loss of power leaves occupants unable to exit.

Mechanical releases provide a fallback, but they are not always as intuitive as a conventional door handle. Depending on the model, a rear release may be behind a cover, under carpet, or accessed by removing trim. Tesla also warns on some models that the window may not lower automatically when the manual release is used, which can damage the glass or surrounding trim.
What the reported incidents show—and don’t show
A 2023 Futurism report summarized accounts of occupants who struggled to get out after a Tesla lost power or shut down. It included a report about a 73-year-old Arizona man said to have been stuck in a Model Y during extreme heat until a relative used the Tesla app to open the vehicle; the account also described a cracked window. These are reported accounts, not a measured failure rate or independent engineering investigation.

The distinction matters. Tesla’s own manuals document that electronic door buttons may not work without low-voltage power, and they describe mechanical alternatives. That establishes a real design and usability issue to understand. The material available here does not quantify incidents across the fleet, establish a rate compared with other automakers, or demonstrate a widespread defect.
Emergency releases by model
These are orientation points, not a substitute for the instructions and illustrations in the manual for your specific vehicle. Hardware can vary by model year, factory, market and equipment. In particular, older Model 3 and Model Y documentation differs from newer instructions about rear releases.

Relevant Tesla documentation includes the Model 3 manual, earlier Model 3 release instructions, Model Y instructions, earlier Model Y documentation, Model S instructions, and Model X instructions.
Use the manual release only when appropriate
Tesla advises using the ordinary interior button or handle when the vehicle has power, and reserving the manual release for a power loss or other need. Normal powered operation can lower the window slightly before opening; the mechanical release may not do that. If the door opens while the window remains in its normal raised position, glass or trim may be damaged. That is a property to keep in mind, not a reason to delay escape when someone faces immediate danger.

Rear seats, child locks and the trunk
Rear passengers should know where their vehicle’s emergency release is before they need it. Tesla manuals also describe rear child locks that prevent children from opening rear doors using the normal interior controls. Child locks are a safety feature, not an emergency-exit method; parents should understand how they interact with both normal operation and the model’s emergency procedure.

What to do if a door will not open
- Stop safely. Do not attempt an emergency release while the vehicle is moving.
- Try the normal interior control once. If it does not respond, avoid repeatedly forcing it.
- If power appears to be unavailable, use the release for your exact model and seating position. Follow the manual’s steps and expect that the window may not lower automatically.
- Get help when the release does not work or the situation is dangerous. Call emergency services for a trapped child or vulnerable person, heat, smoke, fire or injury. Do not wait for routine app or roadside support in a life-threatening emergency.
- Use remote unlocking only as a possible aid. The Tesla app may help if the vehicle can communicate, the person outside has authorized access, and the fault is compatible with remote unlocking. It is not a dependable substitute for the mechanical release.
Breaking a window is destructive and may cause injury; it is not the default response. In an immediate life-threatening emergency, prioritize getting help and getting occupants out over avoiding damage. A window escape tool is only useful if it is reachable, suitable for the vehicle’s glass and secured where it will not become a projectile. A tool in an inaccessible trunk is no backup.
Is this a Tesla-only problem or a confirmed recall issue?
Modern vehicles from many manufacturers use electrical locks, powered handles or electronic latches, so the possibility of a power-related access problem is not unique to Tesla. Tesla is a useful case study because the normal controls are electronic, fallback mechanisms can be subtle, and procedures differ considerably among models and seats. The available evidence does not support saying that Teslas trap occupants more often than other vehicles.
The sources cited here do not establish a regulator finding or recall concluding that Tesla’s door-release design systematically traps occupants. A reported incident, a manual warning and a recall are different kinds of evidence. Owners should check the recall status for their own vehicle through the appropriate official channel; do not treat anecdotes as proof of a fleetwide defect.
