A viral clip shows a Tesla Model Y’s center display rendering a passing train as a string of oversized, stretched-out vehicles. It is an oddity in the car’s driving visualization—but the footage does not establish that the Tesla’s driving system treated the train as road traffic, tried to cross the tracks, or was even operating in Full Self-Driving (Supervised) mode.
What the Tesla train video shows
The clip, attributed to Tesla owner @dezmondOliver on Bluesky, was posted on January 4, 2025. In the footage, a Model Y appears to be stopped at a railroad crossing as a train passes. On the center screen, the train is depicted as a sequence of vehicle-like shapes—first truck-like, then unusually wide and elongated. The shapes change as the railcars pass; some flicker or appear slightly offset from the tracks. The driver jokes about how “elongated” they are.
That is what the screen appears to show. The available report does not document a collision, a near collision, an attempt to cross the tracks, or a dangerous maneuver. Nor does it establish the car’s exact operating mode or what its driving controls did while the train passed.

Tesla’s driving visualization is a human-readable rendering of the vehicle’s surroundings, not raw camera footage or a complete diagnostic readout of the system. Tesla’s owner documentation says the visualization is not holistic: it may not show every object or variable the system uses to make decisions. Highlighted objects can indicate priorities the system is controlling for, but the screen should not be treated as a full account of the system’s internal perception.

That distinction matters here. The display may have assigned parts of the train a vehicle-related category, or it may simply have drawn an imperfect generic shape. Either would be consistent with the clip, but Tesla has not confirmed the cause. A strange icon or shape on the screen does not prove that every perception, planning, and control component made the same error.
Why might a train look like a row of cars?
There are several plausible explanations, none confirmed for this specific vehicle. A perception system may divide a long train into separate objects, especially as railcars pass behind crossing equipment or other obstructions. Repeating rectangular carriages, changing visibility, lateral motion across the road, and perspective could all complicate how objects are classified or drawn. The visualization may also use a generic vehicle-like shape when it has no stable or dedicated representation for an unusual object.

These possibilities are different from a confirmed inability to detect trains. The clip does not establish that Tesla has no train-detection capability, that the car could not distinguish a train from road traffic, or that this display behavior would cause the vehicle to drive onto the tracks. It also does not show that camera-based sensing specifically caused the anomaly.
Tesla says Full Self-Driving (Supervised) uses cameras mounted around the vehicle, with an AI computer processing their input to model the surrounding area. The precise hardware and software in the Model Y in the clip are unknown, however, and Tesla notes that capabilities can vary by model, hardware, software version, configuration, and market. The contemporaneous report characterized Tesla Vision as camera-only, but that alone cannot explain this incident.

Was Full Self-Driving engaged?
The available reporting does not say whether Full Self-Driving (Supervised) was active, identify a software version, or establish whether the driver had stopped manually. The presence of a driving visualization is not enough to determine the system’s operating mode. Without the original uploader’s confirmation or vehicle telemetry, claims that “self-driving” tried to cross in front of the train go beyond the evidence.
Tesla’s current name for the feature is Full Self-Driving (Supervised). Tesla describes it as a driver-assistance feature that requires active supervision; it says the feature does not make a vehicle autonomous, and the driver must remain attentive and ready to take over.

A display anomaly is not automatically a control failure

- Perception: how software identifies and locates objects. The shapes may suggest a classification or segmentation problem, but the screen alone cannot reveal the system’s full internal representation.
- Planning and control: what route or action the vehicle selects and whether it steers, brakes, or accelerates. The available account does not show a dangerous response.
- Safety outcome: whether the vehicle avoids a hazard. No collision or attempted track crossing is documented here.
A misleading visualization still matters: drivers may take it as reassurance that the vehicle has understood everything around it. But it is not proof of a safety-critical failure, either. Tesla’s documentation warns that the display is incomplete and that drivers must remain prepared to intervene, particularly in complex situations such as intersections and other difficult road conditions.

What drivers should take from it
At a railroad crossing, respond to the road, crossing signals, gates, and train—not the touchscreen’s object icons. Do not use a visualization as a substitute for watching the scene or as evidence that an assistance feature has correctly understood every hazard. Tesla’s owner guidance stresses driver attention and readiness to intervene; its limitations documentation also warns that the system may need intervention in complex situations.
What remains unknown
The report identifies the vehicle as a Model Y, but does not provide its model year, exact location, train operator or type, software version, or sensor configuration. It does not establish whether Full Self-Driving (Supervised) was engaged, whether the driver had already stopped, or whether Tesla investigated or publicly responded. Without those details, the video is best understood as a striking visualization anomaly—not a complete account of what the car perceived or would have done.
