Tesla revealed its two-seat, steering-wheel-free Cybercab at the “We, Robot” event on October 10, 2024. That reveal was not the launch of a Cybercab fleet: Tesla began its Robotaxi ride service in Austin in June 2025 using Model Y vehicles, and its purpose-built Cybercab was still being tested in Austin in June 2026. As of August 16, 2026, Tesla lists limited Robotaxi service in parts of Austin, Dallas, Houston, Miami, Orlando, and Tampa.

The key distinction is between Tesla’s Cybercab vision and the service riders can request today. Availability, pricing, and human supervision vary by location and operating mode; “Robotaxi” branding alone does not mean every ride is fully driverless.

What Tesla revealed in 2024

Tesla held its “We, Robot” event at a Warner Bros. studio property in California on October 10, 2024. The central reveal was Cybercab, a purpose-built, two-seat vehicle designed for autonomous point-to-point trips. Tesla showed it without a steering wheel or pedals and described a future in which customers request rides through an app.

The event also presented the larger Robovan, intended for groups or cargo, and Tesla’s Optimus humanoid robot. Together, the vehicles illustrated a broader autonomy strategy—not a single product launch or proof that a large driverless fleet was ready for public use. Tesla’s event page describes its aims, including low operating costs. Those are company goals and claims, not independently verified results.

Cybercab: the intended vehicle, not the current service fleet

Cybercab’s defining idea is that it would be built specifically for driverless transport rather than adapted from a conventional car. Its announced design has two seats and no conventional driver controls. Tesla’s vision is app-based, individualized travel with a vehicle that can spend more time carrying passengers and less time parked.

That design also raises practical questions that a concept reveal cannot settle: production scale, final specifications, passenger accessibility, emergency handling, charging and maintenance. The available sources do not establish a final retail price, confirmed range, production volume, or broad commercial availability. Tesla said Cybercab volume production was planned for 2026, but a schedule is not confirmation that mass production or customer service has begun. Tesla’s filing states the production schedule.

TechCrunch reported that Tesla began testing Cybercab prototypes in Austin in June 2026. Testing is a development milestone, not evidence that riders can book the no-controls vehicle as an ordinary commercial service. Read the report on the Austin testing.

What Tesla actually launched: Model Y rides in Austin

Tesla’s public Robotaxi service began in Austin on June 22, 2025. The initial operation used a small number of Model Y vehicles in a restricted part of South Austin, not the Cybercab shown at the reveal. Early rides also involved an in-vehicle human safety monitor. Contemporary launch coverage reported those initial limits; Tesla’s 2025 annual filing says it entered the autonomous ride-hailing market in June 2025.

This is the most useful way to read the timeline: the 2024 event introduced the vehicle and strategy; the 2025 launch introduced a limited ride service using existing cars; and 2026 brought expansion and reported Cybercab testing. These are related developments, but they are not interchangeable milestones.

Where Tesla lists Robotaxi service

As of August 16, 2026, Tesla’s official Robotaxi page lists limited service areas in these U.S. cities:

  • Austin, Texas
  • Dallas, Texas
  • Houston, Texas
  • Miami, Florida
  • Orlando, Florida
  • Tampa, Florida

A city listing does not mean the whole city is covered or that every trip will be accepted. Service can depend on the pickup and destination, time, vehicle supply, conditions, and other operating restrictions. Check Tesla’s Robotaxi page and the app for current local availability rather than assuming a city name guarantees a ride.

Tesla’s April 2026 investor filing described Austin as “Ramping Unsupervised” and Dallas and Houston as ramping toward unsupervised service. It listed Phoenix and Las Vegas as markets in preparation, not as confirmed service markets in the company’s current city list. The filing also described a safety-driver operation in the San Francisco Bay Area. These labels reflect operating stages and should not be taken to mean that all listed service is unrestricted driverless transport. See Tesla’s market-status table.

How to check or request a ride

  1. Use or create a Tesla Account.
  2. Download Tesla’s Robotaxi app for iOS or Android and sign in.
  3. Enter your pickup point and destination.
  4. If the route is supported, review the fare estimate shown in the app before confirming.

Tesla’s support page says an account is required and the app provides a price estimate. A listed city may still reject a particular route or show no availability. Tesla does not publish a universal public fare table on that support page. Its Robotaxi terms say charges are shown in U.S. dollars and may include items such as tolls, airport fees, or regulatory charges. To compare the cost with another ride service, check the same route and approximate time in each app.

Is Tesla Robotaxi driverless?

There is no single answer for every Tesla Robotaxi ride. The human role can differ by vehicle, market, operating mode, and date. Tesla’s 2026 filing describes progress toward unsupervised operations in some markets, while its legal terms also describe operations using Full Self-Driving (Supervised) at SAE Level 2 with a safety driver. A rider should check the conditions applying to the specific service rather than infer the level of automation from the Robotaxi name.

  • FSD (Supervised): Driver assistance that requires an attentive human driver; it is not the same as a driverless taxi.
  • Safety driver or monitor: A person is present to supervise or respond. The exact role may depend on the operating setup.
  • Unsupervised: Tesla uses this term for certain operating stages, but it does not by itself establish unrestricted operation everywhere or prove that every ride is SAE Level 4.
  • Driverless: A description that should be tied to a particular vehicle, place, operating conditions, and date—not applied to every ride under a service brand.

SAE Level 2 supervision is not equivalent to Level 4 operation, in which the automated system is responsible for driving within its defined operating domain without a human driver performing the driving task. Tesla’s own terms are important context: some Robotaxi operations are described as Level 2 with a safety driver. Check Tesla’s terms for the applicable operating language.

Safety, service limits, and privacy questions

A robotaxi needs to do more than navigate a normal trip. Riders may want to know what happens if a vehicle encounters a blocked road, emergency response, severe weather, a collision, or a mechanical problem; how passengers can get help; and whether remote assistance is available. Other practical questions include support for luggage, service animals, accessibility needs, and child seats. The sources available here do not establish a universal answer for every city or ride, so consult the app and current Tesla terms before booking.

Tesla’s privacy notice discusses trip details, vehicle data, safety-critical events, and government requests. Review the Robotaxi privacy notice if you want to understand what information may be collected and how it may be handled.

Keep company safety claims distinct from independently established results. Tesla’s event page attributes a safety comparison to Elon Musk; it should be read as his claim, not as a settled, independently verified measurement applicable to every trip. A useful assessment would require clearly defined operating conditions and comparable data, including how incidents and miles are counted.

Why Cybercab faces a separate regulatory test

The current Model Y-based service and the no-controls Cybercab do not present identical approval questions. A conventional vehicle operated in a defined service can raise questions about how the automated-driving system is used and where it may operate. A vehicle designed without a steering wheel or pedals also raises vehicle-compliance questions about whether it can meet applicable safety requirements and whether an exemption or other approval is needed.

Deployment can involve several layers: federal vehicle requirements, state and local operating rules, and ongoing safety oversight. On August 14, 2026, Axios reported that Tesla sought permission for 5,000 robotaxis in Las Vegas but received authorization for 10; the report also said Tesla had not applied for a federal exemption for the Cybercab by that date. A requested permit count is not the same as a deployed fleet, and the report about the exemption should be understood as an attributed, time-specific account. Read Axios’s report.

NHTSA announced in July 2026 that it was accelerating automated-vehicle standards, testing exemptions, and approval pathways, while allowing Zoox to commercially deploy robotaxis under the announced pathway. That action does not establish that Tesla’s Cybercab has received equivalent approval. See NHTSA’s announcement.

The business case—and what remains to be proven

Tesla’s longer-term idea is to earn revenue from rides as well as vehicle sales, potentially with Tesla-operated cars and, eventually, customer-owned Teslas participating in a network. More paid trips per vehicle could improve utilization, while removing the human driver is central to Tesla’s stated ambition to lower the cost per ride. Tesla investor materials have described a long-term cost-per-mile goal below rideshare, personal car ownership, and public transit; that is a target, not a demonstrated current cost. See Tesla’s investor materials.

Whether the economics work at scale depends on more than the vehicle itself: fleet utilization, charging, cleaning, maintenance, insurance, remote support, passenger assistance, and regulatory compliance all affect the cost of a completed ride. If owners are invited to contribute cars, the arrangement would also need to explain eligibility, revenue sharing, liability, vehicle availability, and who pays for upkeep. Buying a Tesla—or purchasing FSD (Supervised)—does not by itself establish that an owner can add a car to a Robotaxi fleet.

Tesla, Waymo, and Zoox: compare operations, not names

Tesla is building a Robotaxi service around its vehicles and autonomy strategy, with limited listed service areas and supervision that varies by market. Cybercab’s no-controls design is a future-facing part of that plan; it should not be confused with the Model Y vehicles used in the initial Austin service.

Waymo is an established commercial robotaxi operator in selected U.S. markets and typically operates within defined service zones. Zoox is developing a purpose-built vehicle without a conventional driver position; NHTSA’s July 2026 announcement included a regulatory development allowing Zoox to commercially deploy robotaxis under its stated pathway. These differences in operating history, geography, vehicle design, and regulatory status matter more than the shared “robotaxi” label. Do not assume Zoox’s approval applies to Tesla, or compare fares and city coverage without checking current official information for the specific trip.

What the reveal means now

Tesla did reveal Cybercab in 2024, and it has since moved beyond a concept presentation into limited commercial Robotaxi operations with Model Y vehicles. The company lists service in six Texas and Florida cities and has reported Cybercab testing in Austin, but the available evidence does not establish a broadly available, mass-scale Cybercab fleet. The remaining test is whether Tesla can turn its stated goals into reliable, appropriately approved service at scale—while making clear to riders which vehicle they are getting and how much human supervision is involved.
