Tesla owners have reported Full Self-Driving (Supervised) approaching or proceeding through red lights, but the reports do not establish that a particular new update causes a widespread defect. The headline’s original reference points to FSD 12.5.1.3 in August 2024; newer 2026 posts mention later software, including 14.3.6, but remain anecdotal. Tesla’s manual says the system is not designed to proceed through a red light, and drivers must supervise it and intervene.
Which update are the reports about?
There is no single update that the available reports conclusively identify as the cause. The original discussion associated with this story dates to August 28, 2024, and names FSD version 12.5.1.3. It should not be presented as a newly discovered 2026 incident. The original owner discussion is a user post, not an independent investigation.
Separate posts from 2026 describe unusual traffic-signal behavior on later FSD software, including version 14.3.6. These accounts are also user-generated and do not establish that the software caused a repeatable failure across vehicles. One post naming FSD 14.3.6 and another discussion of FSD behavior in 2026 illustrate the complaints, not their frequency or cause.
Third-party update trackers list several 2026 software branches, including FSD 14 Lite releases. Their notes also describe traffic-light handling improvements in an FSD 14.3.3 branch, covering complex intersections, compound lights, curved roads and stopping at yellow lights. Those notes do not prove that a later version fixed every reported problem—or that an update caused a regression. Rollout and feature availability can vary by vehicle hardware, model and region. What counts as a red-light failure?
“Tried to run a red” can describe very different events. A vehicle entering an intersection against a clearly red signal is not the same as creeping beyond the stop line and then stopping, braking late, or approaching as a light changes from yellow to red. A driver may also intervene before the car crosses the line, making the event a near miss rather than a completed violation.
Signal type and placement matter, too. A protected-turn arrow, lane-specific signal, temporary work-zone light, obscured signal or signal on a curved approach can be difficult to interpret. A short, cropped video may not show the signal’s earlier state, the car’s lane, or whether the driver pressed the brake or accelerator.

The strongest evidence would show an uninterrupted view of the signal and vehicle path, identify the exact software version and vehicle configuration, and document any driver intervention. Tesla logs or records provided to regulators, along with multiple independently documented incidents on the same version, would help establish whether a pattern exists. Anonymous posts, clips without version details, and descriptions of an “almost” incident are weaker evidence. The reports available here do not provide a representative failure rate.

Tesla’s owner’s manual for Traffic Light and Stop Sign Control says the feature detects an upcoming traffic light, stop sign or road marking and displays a notification. It says the vehicle is not designed to proceed through an intersection when the light is red, or when a yellow light appears and there is adequate distance to stop. The manual also explains that the driver can take over by braking.

Tesla calls the feature Full Self-Driving (Supervised), but says it does not make a car autonomous and does not replace the driver. The company’s FSD support page describes driving tasks the system can perform while emphasizing the need for active supervision. The intended behavior is clear; what the owner reports do not tell us is how often real-world situations lead the system to approach or enter an intersection incorrectly.

The red-light reports sit within a broader safety scrutiny of Tesla’s driver-assistance technology. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) opened an investigation after reports involving vehicles running red lights, traveling on the wrong side of the road and, in some cases, crashing. The investigation reportedly covered about 2.9 million vehicles equipped with FSD. Associated Press coverage describes that context.

An investigation is not a final finding that every reported event was caused by FSD, or that a particular 2026 update is responsible. The material available here does not verify a recall specifically for the alleged red-light behavior. A separate 2026 Tesla software recall concerned delayed rearview-camera images; it is a different issue and should not be treated as a red-light-system recall. The NHTSA recall filing says the camera remedy was delivered over the air.

NHTSA’s broader 2026 initiatives concerning automated-vehicle safety and interaction with first responders are regulatory context, not findings about a specific Tesla FSD update. See the agency’s notices on first-responder interactions and automated-vehicle standards and guidance.
What owners should do
- Stay ready to take over. Watch the road and be prepared to brake immediately if the car approaches a red signal incorrectly. Do not rely on the feature to make a safe decision for you.
- Do not test the behavior. Never allow the vehicle to continue toward a red light just to see what it will do.
- Preserve useful details. If an incident occurs, save available dashcam footage and record the date, location, vehicle model and hardware if known, exact software version, weather and lighting, signal type, lane and what the driver did. Keep enough footage to show the signal and the vehicle’s approach, not just the final seconds.
- Report the event to Tesla. Use Tesla’s in-car feedback or service channels and include the recorded details. Do not assume a later update has fixed the behavior unless that result is documented.
Tesla’s manual says repeated failure to respond to attention prompts can trigger escalating warnings and disable the feature for the rest of the drive. The manual explains those warnings and restrictions.
What remains unknown
The available accounts do not establish how often these incidents occur, which hardware configurations or software versions are affected, whether the behavior can be reproduced, or whether any particular release made it worse. They also do not establish how many reported “attempts” ended in an actual red-light entry rather than a driver-prevented near miss. Resolving those questions requires complete incident evidence and, ideally, data from Tesla or regulators—not just isolated posts.
