Short version: Tesla CEO Elon Musk said Hardware 3 (HW3) cannot achieve unsupervised Full Self-Driving through software alone. Tesla has described a future upgrade involving the vehicle’s computer and cameras, and has discussed discounted trade-ins toward AI4-equipped vehicles for some customers who purchased FSD. But Tesla has not published complete consumer details covering eligibility, pricing, timing, or booking.
That is a major reversal of the original expectation for HW3 owners—but it does not mean FSD has been removed from their cars. Tesla’s current documentation still lists FSD (Supervised) availability for vehicles with FSD Computer 3.0 or newer, subject to configuration, software, location, and other conditions.
What Tesla actually announced
During Tesla’s Q1 2026 earnings call, Elon Musk said HW3 “simply does not have the capability to achieve unsupervised FSD.” He also said Tesla would provide an upgrade route involving replacement of the computer and cameras to move eligible vehicles to Hardware 4.
These are two related but separate statements:
- Capability statement: Existing HW3 hardware will not reach Tesla’s unsupervised-FSD objective through software updates alone.
- Remedy statement: Tesla intends to offer a computer-and-camera upgrade path for qualifying vehicles.
The comments came in an earnings-call discussion, not a detailed consumer retrofit bulletin. Tesla has not yet published a universal program with a final price, opening date, model-by-model eligibility table, appointment process, or warranty terms. The announcement should therefore be treated as a stated future plan—not proof that every HW3 owner can currently book a free HW4 conversion.
The reported earnings-call transcript contains Musk’s comments, while Tesla’s investor-relations webcast page is the official location for the call.
HW3, FSD Computer 3.0 and HW4: what the labels mean
“Hardware 3,” “HW3” and “FSD Computer 3.0” refer to Tesla’s earlier onboard computing platform for its FSD system. HW4, also called AI4 in Tesla’s investor and product discussions, is a newer hardware generation.
The important practical point is that a vehicle’s model year alone does not reliably identify its FSD hardware. Eligibility can vary by model, production date, market, trim, camera package, existing Autopilot or FSD package, and installed software. Tesla says feature availability varies by vehicle configuration, hardware, software version, region, model, trim and model year. Check the vehicle itself and Tesla’s records rather than relying on a seller’s calendar-year description.
The proposed remedy is also more than a simple computer swap. Musk specifically referred to replacing both the computer and cameras. Wiring, cooling, sensor compatibility and other model-specific service requirements have not been fully described publicly.
Does this mean FSD is being removed from HW3?
No—not based on Tesla’s current public documentation. The announcement concerns the higher unsupervised-autonomy objective, not the removal of the current supervised driver-assistance product.

Tesla’s support documentation says FSD (Supervised) does not make the vehicle autonomous and requires active driver supervision. Tesla’s investor materials also distinguish supervised consumer driving from unsupervised Robotaxi operations. An HW3 vehicle can therefore remain useful for supervised features even though Tesla no longer expects that hardware to support unsupervised FSD.

Tesla’s subscription documentation currently lists vehicles with FSD Computer 3.0 or above as eligible to subscribe to FSD (Supervised), subject to Tesla’s conditions. In the United States, Tesla lists the subscription at $99 per month, although prices and features can change.

That subscription provides access to the current supervised product. It is not a down payment on an unsupervised upgrade, and subscribing does not establish eligibility for a future retrofit.
To subscribe through the Tesla app, Tesla’s documented path is:
- Open the Tesla app.
- Tap Upgrades.
- Tap Software Upgrades.
- Tap Subscribe at the top.
- Tap Add for FSD.
Only the Tesla Account that owns the vehicle can subscribe through the app. Availability may differ outside the United States and can depend on the exact vehicle configuration.

The two proposed upgrade routes
1. Retrofit the current vehicle
The proposed retrofit would replace relevant hardware—at minimum, the computer and cameras mentioned by Musk—while allowing the owner to keep the current vehicle.
Potential advantages:
- Avoids replacing a mechanically sound car.
- May cost less than buying another vehicle.
- Could preserve the value of purchased FSD if Tesla makes eligibility depend on that entitlement.
- Avoids some trade-in, financing and registration costs.
Important uncertainties:
- No complete public price or launch schedule.
- No public universal eligibility list.
- Unknown model-specific camera, wiring, cooling and sensor requirements.
- Unclear whether the target will always be HW4 or a newer platform available when the program launches.
- Unknown warranty, service capacity and regional availability.
- No guarantee that an upgraded vehicle will receive legally approved unsupervised driving.
Tesla’s support page documents a workflow for scheduling an AI-computer installation when Tesla’s subscription system determines that a vehicle lacks the necessary computer: Tesla app → Upgrades → Software Upgrades → Full Self-Driving (Supervised) → follow the prompts. That existing workflow should not automatically be interpreted as a generally available HW3-to-HW4 computer-and-camera retrofit.
2. Trade in for an AI4-equipped vehicle
Tesla has also discussed a discounted trade-in route for customers who purchased FSD, allowing them to move into a vehicle equipped with newer AI4 hardware. This is different from a retrofit: the existing car is replaced through Tesla’s normal vehicle-sale and trade-in process.

But Tesla has not published a universal discount amount. The real cost includes the trade-in valuation, replacement-vehicle price, taxes, registration, financing, insurance and depreciation.
An AI4-equipped vehicle is not automatically an autonomous vehicle. Hardware capability remains separate from software validation, regulatory approval, operating-domain limits, mapping, insurance and Tesla’s safety requirements.
What is confirmed and what is not

Who is likely to qualify?
The clearest publicly reported commitment concerns customers who purchased FSD outright. Tesla has not published a final policy explaining whether the same treatment applies to every other ownership situation.
Unresolved cases include:
- Monthly FSD subscribers who never purchased the package.
- Owners whose FSD was included with the vehicle.
- Used-car owners whose vehicle has purchased FSD attached to it.
- Owners who transferred or attempted to transfer FSD.
- Vehicles previously upgraded from HW2.5 to HW3.
- Cars with damaged, replaced or non-original cameras.
- Leased vehicles.
- Vehicles outside the United States.
- Salvage or rebuilt vehicles.
Use “may qualify,” not “will qualify,” until Tesla publishes the program rules. Tesla could tie eligibility to the original FSD purchaser, the current vehicle, the current owner’s account, or another entitlement record.
What happens to purchased FSD when a Tesla is sold?
Tesla’s current support page says its FSD (Supervised) Transfer Program ended on March 31, 2026. It also says that when a previous owner subscribed, the new owner must subscribe using their own Tesla Account. If the previous owner purchased FSD outright and did not transfer it to another vehicle, the buyer may receive the vehicle with FSD, depending on Tesla’s records and the transaction history.
This matters because purchased FSD may remain associated with the vehicle, but Tesla has not clarified whether a future HW3 upgrade right would follow:
- the vehicle;
- the original purchaser;
- the current owner; or
- the FSD entitlement in Tesla’s account system.
Used-car buyers should verify FSD status in the Tesla app, on the vehicle touchscreen, in purchase history and in written transaction documents before treating the vehicle—or a promised retrofit—as more valuable.

What HW3 owners should do now
Keep the vehicle and use supervised FSD if:
- You are satisfied with the current supervised features.
- The car is reliable and otherwise suits your needs.
- You do not need unsupervised operation.
- You prefer to wait for firm retrofit terms.
- You purchased FSD and want to monitor Tesla’s policy without accepting trade-in costs.
Wait for retrofit details if:
- You purchased FSD outright.
- The battery and mechanical condition are good.
- Replacing the vehicle would create substantial depreciation or financing costs.
- You can tolerate an indefinite timeline.
- You want the final price, hardware target and eligibility rules before acting.
Consider a trade-in if:
- You want newer hardware now.
- Tesla provides a meaningful vehicle-specific discount.
- The cost of waiting, repairs, depreciation or insurance outweighs the cost of replacement.
- You confirm the replacement vehicle’s AI hardware and camera configuration.
Do not rely on the word “FSD” alone
Before buying, selling or paying for service, ask Tesla or the seller to document:
- The exact FSD package status.
- The FSD computer generation.
- Whether FSD was purchased or only subscribed to.
- Whether a hardware installation is pending.
- Whether the vehicle is eligible for the announced upgrade route.
- Whether the upgrade is free, discounted or chargeable.
- Whether eligibility follows the vehicle after resale.
If no upgrade option appears in the Tesla app, that does not prove permanent ineligibility. It may mean the vehicle is not currently eligible, the program is not open in that market, the account is not the registered owner’s account, or Tesla has not activated the broader retrofit workflow.
What this means for used-Tesla buyers
HW3 cars should no longer be valued as if a software update will automatically unlock unsupervised FSD. That does not make every HW3 Tesla a bad purchase: the car may still support FSD (Supervised), Autopilot and ordinary vehicle functions. But buyers should price the vehicle based on confirmed hardware and current features, not an unpriced future promise.
Be particularly cautious of claims such as “FSD-ready,” “HW4 upgrade guaranteed” or “future-proof.” Ask for the exact computer generation and proof of the FSD entitlement. Confirm that the vehicle’s account and purchase history match the seller’s description before completing the transaction.
Why an HW4 upgrade still would not guarantee autonomy
Replacing the computer and cameras could address a hardware limitation, but it would not by itself authorize hands-off or driverless operation. Tesla would still need to provide compatible software, validate the system, define where and under what conditions it operates, and comply with applicable regulations.
Tesla’s investor materials distinguish FSD (Supervised) from unsupervised Robotaxi operations. Even Tesla’s planned AI5 production for 2027 does not establish that a future HW3 remedy will target AI5 or that AI5 will be retrofittable. Hardware generations should therefore be treated as capability platforms, not promises of a specific legal or commercial driving service.
Bottom line
Tesla has abandoned the expectation that existing HW3 hardware will reach unsupervised FSD through software alone. It has described a future computer-and-camera upgrade route and discussed discounted AI4 trade-ins for some customers who purchased FSD. However, the owner remedy is not fully specified: price, timing, eligibility, coverage and the treatment of FSD after resale remain open questions.
For now, HW3 owners can continue using or subscribing to FSD (Supervised) where Tesla supports it. Keep the car, wait for official retrofit terms, or consider a trade-in based on your vehicle’s condition and a real Tesla offer—not on the assumption that an upgrade is already guaranteed.
