A Tesla driver says his car moved through a lowered railroad crossing gate while Full Self-Driving was engaged, just as a DART train approached in Plano, Texas. Video shows the car breaking through the gate and the train passing close by. It does not establish what caused the car to move: the driver’s account has not been confirmed by vehicle data or an official finding.
What happened in Plano
Joshua Brown said the incident happened on April 7, 2026, at a railroad crossing near 18th Street in Plano. According to reports, the crossing lights were flashing and the gates were down as a DART train approached. Brown said his Tesla began moving forward unexpectedly while Full Self-Driving (FSD) was engaged. The car broke through the crossing arm; Brown said the train passed close by before he stopped. He survived, with no physical injury reported in the coverage.
FOX 4’s report and video appeared on April 15, and Storyful’s video and account also document the event. The video is alarming, but it is not a technical record of what the Tesla’s systems were doing.
What the video shows—and what it cannot show
The footage shows a vehicle moving through a lowered gate while a train approaches or passes, with the gate striking the car. It makes clear how dangerous the situation was. But video alone cannot establish whether FSD issued a movement command, whether Brown pressed the accelerator or brake, what the vehicle detected, or whether a software or hardware fault occurred. It also cannot show whether the same behavior would recur under similar conditions.

That distinction matters. Brown said the car accelerated on its own while FSD was active. The available reporting does not include Tesla telemetry, an independent technical examination, or a regulator’s finding that confirms the cause. It is accurate to say the Tesla entered the crossing and that Brown attributed the movement to FSD; it is not established that FSD malfunctioned or failed to detect the train.
The driver’s account and the supervision question
Brown reportedly said he had briefly zoned out while waiting for the train. He also said Tesla’s position was that drivers must remain actively engaged. Brown’s response, as reported by Futurism, was that he noticed the car moving and reacted before the train hit him. He has also said he had driven more than 40,000 miles using FSD; that mileage is his statement, not an independently audited figure.
His reported lapse is relevant because supervision is part of how the system is meant to be used. It does not, by itself, prove the car behaved correctly. Likewise, the driver’s account does not settle whether the system, an input from the driver, a fault, or several factors together caused the movement. Determining that would require evidence such as vehicle logs and a technical investigation.

“Full Self-Driving” still requires a supervising driver
Tesla currently calls the product Full Self-Driving (Supervised). Despite the name, it is a driver-assistance system, not autonomous driving that lets an occupant stop monitoring the road. Tesla says the driver must actively supervise and remains responsible for the vehicle’s operation in its Vehicle Safety Report. NHTSA materials likewise address the importance of driver engagement and how Tesla communicates the system’s limits.
Some coverage of the Plano incident uses “Autopilot” in describing the event, while Brown and other reports refer to FSD. Those labels should not be treated as interchangeable proof of which software or feature was active at every moment. Brown said FSD was engaged; the public reporting does not supply vehicle data to independently verify its status at the instant the car moved.
The April 8 software update is not proof of a fix
FOX 4 and Storyful reported that Tesla released a new FSD Supervised version on April 8, the day after the incident, and attributed a claim of 20% faster reaction time to that update. The timing does not establish a connection. The reporting does not show that the update was issued in response to Brown’s incident, that his car received it, or that it changed railroad-crossing behavior. The reaction-time figure is a reported Tesla claim, not an independently verified measurement of this event.

What broader safety scrutiny does—and does not—tell us
NHTSA investigative material discusses concerns involving Tesla FSD, including whether the system can detect degraded roadway visibility and warn drivers early enough, and how Tesla communicates that FSD is not autonomous. That regulatory context is relevant to questions about supervision, but it does not determine why Brown’s car moved at this crossing.

Tesla’s safety report also presents the company’s own aggregate comparisons of crashes involving FSD (Supervised) and manual driving. Such fleet-level analysis is not a verdict on a single event: it depends on the company’s methodology and comparison assumptions, and it cannot establish whether a particular maneuver was safe or explain what happened in Plano.

- Stop at least 15 feet from flashing lights, a lowered gate, a flagger, or a stop sign.
- Never drive around a lowering gate or proceed past active warning signals.
- Wait until the gates are fully raised and the lights have stopped flashing before crossing.
- Do not stop on the tracks; cross only when there is room to clear them completely.
- If your vehicle is stranded on the tracks, get out immediately, move away from the tracks, and contact emergency services or the railroad using the crossing’s emergency-notification information.

What remains unresolved
Brown’s account and the footage establish a serious near miss, not its technical cause. The public reports cited here do not establish the car’s software version, whether FSD remained active at the precise moment of movement, what the pedals registered, or how the vehicle interpreted the gates, lights, tracks, and train. Until those details are independently established, claims that FSD definitively caused the event—or that a subsequent update fixed it—go beyond the available evidence.
