Teleperformance has partnered with Sanas on software that modifies how some English-speaking contact-center agents sound in real time. The technology is marketed as accent translation: an agent speaks normally, while the system adjusts pronunciation, stress, and intonation toward a US or UK English target.

The arrangement is real, but the headline needs qualification. Available reporting does not show that every Indian Teleperformance employee uses the system, that its use is mandatory, or that its promised business benefits have been independently verified. It also raises a difficult question: does the software help workers be understood, or does it accommodate the belief that Indian English needs correction?

What Teleperformance announced

On February 28, 2025, reporting attributed to Bloomberg said that Teleperformance had invested $13 million in Sanas and secured exclusive rights to resell the technology to clients. Teleperformance deputy CEO Thomas Mackenbrock was quoted describing the system as able to “neutralize the accent of the Indian speaker with zero latency.” Contemporaneous reporting also described the technology in the context of Indian agents serving English-speaking customers.

Teleperformance is a France-based customer-experience and business-services company. It is safer to describe it as one of the world’s largest contact-center operators than to treat “world’s largest call center” as an independently established ranking. Sanas’s own customer story uses broader language, calling Teleperformance one of the world’s largest digital-services providers.

The evidence supports an investment, partnership, and operational rollout. It does not establish how many Indian agents use the tool, whether particular clients require it, or whether all employees can decline it without consequences.

How accent translation works

Sanas describes Accent Translation as real-time voice-to-voice speech processing, not ordinary text-to-speech and not a chatbot. The basic sequence is:

  1. The agent speaks through a normal headset or calling application.
  2. The system analyzes pronunciation and other speech characteristics.
  3. It modifies features such as pronunciation, stress, and intonation.
  4. The customer hears speech intended to sound closer to a selected target accent.

Sanas says the agent’s vocal identity, emotion, and tone remain intact while the accent changes. Its current documentation lists source accents from India, the Philippines, Africa, and the Middle East, with United States and United Kingdom output accents. The product can be deployed through a desktop application, SDK, or API, depending on an enterprise’s architecture. These are vendor descriptions, not independent test results.

The phrase “zero latency” should likewise be treated as an attributed claim, not a measured industry fact. A real deployment’s experience can depend on network conditions, microphones, telephony systems, background noise, speech patterns, and the complexity of the conversation.

What the companies say the technology does

Teleperformance’s stated rationale is that some customers find unfamiliar accents difficult to understand. The company has associated accent modification with:

  • fewer repetitions and misunderstandings;
  • shorter average handling time;
  • higher customer satisfaction;
  • greater conversational “intimacy”;
  • access to a wider global talent pool; and
  • support for human agents rather than replacing them.

Sanas presents a similar argument. Its product page says the goal is to help people be understood without requiring them to suppress their natural accents. The company also markets noise cancellation, speech enhancement, language translation, and speech-intelligence tools. Those products should not be confused with accent conversion: better audio quality or language translation may solve a different problem.

Teleperformance’s investment also reflects the commercial incentive behind the claims. Both companies benefit if accent translation is seen as a general enterprise solution rather than a narrow intervention whose value varies by account, customer group, and call quality.

The central controversy: accommodation or discrimination?

The strongest argument in favor of the tool is practical. Customers can genuinely struggle with unfamiliar pronunciation, rapid speech, jargon, or poor phone connections. An agent may face repeated requests to repeat information or abusive comments about their accent. If an employee chooses the feature, it could reduce that burden without requiring the worker to attend accent coaching or hide their identity through their own effort.

But the same technology can shift responsibility in the opposite direction. “Neutralize” suggests that the Indian accent is a defect, while US or UK English is the commercial norm. The software may therefore accommodate accent bias rather than challenge it. It could also allow employers to pressure workers into using it, make transformed speech part of performance scoring, or treat refusal as a lack of professionalism.

Some commentary describes this as “whitening” or Americanizing Indian accents. That language captures a cultural criticism, but it is not Sanas’s formal technical label. The company documents US and UK target accents, not “white accents.” The concern is that those targets may nevertheless be treated as more acceptable in global customer service.

There is also a question of authenticity. A customer may assume they are hearing the agent’s unmodified voice. If the output sounds unnatural, mispronounces a name, or loses emotional nuance, the result could be less trust rather than more. Accent transformation may also perform differently across regional accents, pitch ranges, genders, code-switching, technical vocabulary, and poor-quality connections.

  • how the system handles names, local terms, code-switching, and emotional speech;
  • whether transformed speech can interfere with identity verification; or
  • whether any regulator, union, or Indian labor body has formally challenged the arrangement.

Sanas says its processing occurs on the device and that it does not monitor, record, or store call data. That is an important privacy claim, but buyers would still need to verify how audio streams, derived voice data, transcripts, diagnostic logs, and integrations are handled under their contract and local law.

Do later product updates change the original story?

Sanas announced Accent Translation 4.0 in September 2025 and version 4.5 in December 2025. Its documentation available in 2026 describes a broader, updated product than the system discussed in the original 2025 announcement. Those later features should not automatically be treated as proof of what Teleperformance deployed in early 2025.

Sanas also says its products surpassed 750,000 users globally in 2025. That is a company-reported adoption figure, not an independently verified measurement of Teleperformance’s deployment.

Accent conversion is not the same as replacing agents

The reported system changes how a human agent is heard. That is different from:

  • Agent assistance: software that suggests information or next steps during a call;
  • Speech intelligence: tools that summarize calls or analyze quality, compliance, sentiment, and risk;
  • Conversational AI: systems that handle some customer interactions without a human agent; and
  • Language translation: conversion between languages rather than regional varieties of the same language.

Teleperformance presented accent transformation as an augmentation tool while contact-center companies face pressure from chatbots and voice automation. That does not prove that agents are being replaced, although the broader adoption of AI may affect contact-center work in other ways.

What a responsible deployment should require

Organizations considering this technology should answer these questions before rollout:

  1. Consent: Can an agent decline without losing pay, shifts, promotion opportunities, or performance standing?
  2. Transparency: Are workers and customers told when speech is being transformed?
  3. Evidence: Are outcomes measured against comparable calls, agents, and customers before and after adoption?
  4. Quality: What happens when the system alters names, technical terms, regional vocabulary, or emotional speech?
  5. Latency: What is the measured delay under actual network and telephony conditions, rather than a broad “zero latency” claim?
  6. Privacy: Are audio, voiceprints, transcripts, and diagnostic data stored, and who can access them?
  7. Worker participation: Have Indian agents tested the output and evaluated whether it preserves their identity and meaning?
  8. Alternatives: Has the company tried better headsets, network quality, noise cancellation, clearer scripts, slower pacing, captions, routing, or voluntary training first?

In many cases, the customer’s difficulty may result from background noise, a poor connection, speed, jargon, hearing loss, or unfamiliar subject matter—not the agent’s accent. Changing the voice should not become a substitute for fixing those problems.

The larger question

Sanas’s product turns a social problem into a software setting. That can be helpful when a worker voluntarily uses it as protection from repeated misunderstandings or abuse. It can be harmful when an employer treats a particular accent as inherently unprofessional and makes the worker responsible for customer prejudice.

The key issue is therefore not simply whether the output sounds more American or British. It is who controls the feature, what evidence supports its use, whether customers are informed, and whether workers can reject it without penalty. Until those details are public, the Teleperformance-Sanas arrangement is best understood as a real commercial deployment with claimed efficiency benefits and unresolved labor, cultural, accessibility, and privacy risks.
