If Telegram works on mobile data but stays on “Connecting…” or fails to send messages on Wi-Fi, the problem is usually the Wi-Fi network, router, DNS filtering, VPN, proxy, firewall, ISP, or regional network path—not your Telegram account. First, turn off Wi-Fi and test Telegram on cellular data. That single comparison determines which troubleshooting path to follow.
Start with these three network tests
- Turn off Wi-Fi and test Telegram on mobile data.
- Connect the same device to another Wi-Fi network or a phone hotspot.
- Test Telegram Web or Telegram on another device, if available.
Also check whether websites and other messaging apps work, and whether other devices on the same Wi-Fi have the same problem.

1. Disable an accidental Telegram proxy
Telegram has its own proxy setting. An expired, overloaded, incorrectly configured, or untrusted proxy can prevent the app from connecting even when Wi-Fi itself is working.

- Open the proxy settings for your device.
- Disable the active proxy temporarily.
- Reconnect to Wi-Fi and test Telegram again.
- Android: Settings > Data and Storage > Proxy Settings
- iPhone/iPad: Settings > Data and Storage > Proxy
- Telegram Desktop: Settings > Advanced > Connection Type
- Telegram for macOS: Settings > Data and Storage > Use Proxy

Do not copy proxy credentials from random websites or channels. Telegram says a proxy operator may be able to log your IP address or fail to deliver traffic, even though the operator cannot read encrypted Telegram traffic. Use only a provider you trust.
2. Test VPN, Private DNS, ad blockers, and security software
A VPN can be the cause of the failure—or the diagnostic clue that reveals a Wi-Fi or ISP routing problem. Test both conditions:
- Temporarily disconnect the device VPN and retry Telegram.
- If Telegram still fails, try a reputable VPN where lawful and appropriate.
- Temporarily disable custom or Private DNS, router-wide ad blocking, parental controls, antivirus web protection, or firewall filtering.
- Retry Telegram after each change so you know which setting affected the result.
Do not leave antivirus, firewall, parental-control, or other security protection disabled. Restore it after testing. Apple also recommends testing Wi-Fi after removing suspected VPN or security software.

3. Restart the device, modem, and router correctly
- Force-close Telegram.
- Restart the phone or computer.
- Unplug the modem and router.
- Wait about 30 seconds.
- Reconnect the modem first, then the router.
- Wait for the internet connection to stabilize and reconnect your device to Wi-Fi.
If your router shows separate networks, test both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. Move closer to the router, try another mesh node, or test a guest network. A different Wi-Fi band can reveal a local wireless or access-point problem. Apple recommends restarting the modem/router and trying another frequency when available; see its Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance.
4. Complete any captive-portal login
Hotel, airport, library, school, office, and public Wi-Fi may require browser authentication before apps can connect.
- Open a browser.
- Visit a normal website or an HTTP page that triggers the network sign-in screen.
- Complete the Wi-Fi login or accept the network terms.
- Close and reopen Telegram.
On work or school Wi-Fi, Telegram may be deliberately restricted by an administrator. Contact the network administrator rather than attempting to bypass organizational policy.

Telegram can be blocked while ordinary browsing continues to work. Possible causes include router parental controls, ad-blocking DNS, application-blocking rules, firewall policies, ISP filtering, traffic inspection, a stale DNS route, or regional interference.

- Open your router’s administration page.
- Check parental controls, access-control lists, application blocking, firewall rules, and device restrictions.
- Temporarily pause router-wide ad blocking or filtering.
- If you use custom DNS, temporarily return to the router or ISP default DNS.
- Restart the router and test Telegram again.
- Compare the result with a phone hotspot.
Changing DNS is a diagnostic and possible remedy, not a universal fix. DNS cannot repair every firewall, routing, throttling, or service-outage problem, and changing it may conflict with a managed network’s policy.
6. Update Telegram and repair the app
- Update Telegram through the official Google Play Store, Apple App Store, or Telegram’s official desktop distribution channel.
- Install available operating-system updates.
- Force-close Telegram and open it again.
- On Android, clear Telegram’s cache from the app’s storage settings. Do not clear app data unless you understand the sign-in consequences.
- On desktop, test Telegram Web and the official desktop client separately.
- Avoid unofficial modified clients while diagnosing the problem.
Telegram’s FAQ currently lists iOS 13.0 or later, Android 5.0 or later, native macOS, and universal Windows/macOS/Linux desktop apps. Compatibility and menu labels can change, so check the current Telegram FAQ for your platform.
7. iPhone and iPad checks
If the Wi-Fi connection itself is unreliable:
- Go to Settings > Wi-Fi and confirm that Wi-Fi is enabled and the intended network is selected.
- Turn off Airplane Mode.
- Test with Wi-Fi Assist disabled.
- Restart the device and router.
- Temporarily remove or disable VPN/security software for testing.
As a last resort, reset network settings: Settings > General > Transfer or Reset [device] > Reset > Reset Network Settings.

This removes saved Wi-Fi networks and passwords, mobile settings, VPN settings, and APN settings. It is therefore a late-stage fix, not a first step. Apple’s current support instructions are available at Apple Support.

8. Android checks
Android menus differ between Samsung, Pixel, OnePlus, Xiaomi, and other manufacturers. Use the Settings search box for these terms:
- Wi-Fi: forget the affected network, then join it again.
- Private DNS: test with custom DNS disabled.
- VPN: disconnect device or always-on VPNs.
- App battery usage: remove unusually strict background restrictions for Telegram while testing.
- Reset network settings: use only after the less disruptive steps fail.
- Telegram storage: clear the app cache, not app data, first.
Finally, connect the Android device to a hotspot. If Telegram works there, focus on the original Wi-Fi network rather than reinstalling the app.
9. Windows, macOS, and Linux checks
- Quit Telegram completely, including from the Windows system tray or macOS menu bar.
- Restart the computer and router.
- Check Telegram Desktop’s Settings > Advanced > Connection Type for an accidental custom proxy.
- Temporarily test without a system VPN or proxy.
- Test Telegram Web in a browser.
- Check the operating system firewall and any managed-device security policy.
If Telegram Web works on the same computer but the desktop app does not, focus on the desktop client’s proxy, cache, version, or firewall access. If both fail only on that Wi-Fi, investigate the network instead.
10. Identify an ISP or regional problem
A Wi-Fi-only failure can originate with the ISP or a regional network path rather than your home router. This is more plausible when multiple devices on the same provider fail, Telegram works through a hotspot or VPN, or text works while calls and media are affected.

Compare a home Wi-Fi connection, a different provider’s hotspot, Telegram Web, and another device. Check the ISP’s outage page and reports from multiple independent users. Do not conclude that Telegram is globally down from one failed connection.
For example, a March 2026 report described Telegram access problems through some Russian providers, with differences between mobile data, Wi-Fi, desktop access, media downloads, and VPN use. That was a geography- and provider-specific report, not evidence of a worldwide outage. See The Moscow Times report.
11. When to contact support
Contact your ISP or network administrator when Telegram fails on every device connected to one network, especially if a hotspot works. Provide the affected network, approximate start time, device types, whether websites work, and whether Telegram Web, media, calls, or a VPN behave differently.

Record the exact symptom—crash, “Connecting…”, delayed notifications, failed media, or failed calls—rather than reporting only that Telegram is not working.
Do not log out or uninstall too early
Logging out is not a routine Wi-Fi fix. Before logging out or uninstalling, confirm that you can receive a Telegram login code, know your two-step-verification password if enabled, and have another logged-in device if possible.
Telegram says Secret Chats are device-specific and are not stored in the Telegram Cloud. Logging out can therefore cause you to lose access to Secret Chats on that device, even though ordinary cloud chats are different. See the Telegram FAQ for Telegram’s explanation.
