The TeamGroup PD40 Mini is a compact USB4 external SSD announced on December 4, 2025. TeamGroup rates it for sequential reads of up to 4,000MB/s and writes of up to 3,500MB/s, with 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB capacities, a 22-gram body, and IP54 dust and splash resistance. The commonly repeated “22Gbps” description should be treated cautiously: TeamGroup’s official specifications identify a USB4 interface rated up to 40Gbps, not 22Gbps storage throughput.
What is the TeamGroup PD40 Mini?
The TeamGroup PD40 Mini is a miniature portable SSD for moving large files between USB-C devices. It is an external drive, not an internal M.2 SSD or a USB flash drive.
The drive measures 75 × 34 × 15.2mm, weighs approximately 22g, and includes a USB-C-to-USB-C cable. TeamGroup lists 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB versions and provides a five-year limited warranty. Its operating temperature is listed as 0°C to 55°C, while its storage temperature is -40°C to 85°C.

Does the PD40 Mini really offer 22Gbps?
Not as a clearly documented official storage-speed specification. TeamGroup’s product material states that the drive uses a USB4 Type-C interface with transmission capability of up to 40Gbps. It separately lists maximum sequential performance of up to 4,000MB/s read and 3,500MB/s write.
The “22” in the headline may be a confusion with the drive’s approximately 22g weight, or it may refer to an unverified real-world throughput figure. It should not be repeated as an established official specification.
The numbers also describe different things:
- 40Gbps is the advertised USB4 link-rate ceiling.
- 4,000MB/s read is TeamGroup’s maximum sequential read claim.
- 3,500MB/s write is TeamGroup’s maximum sequential write claim.
As arithmetic context, 4,000MB/s is approximately 32Gbps and 3,500MB/s is approximately 28Gbps before protocol overhead and other losses. Neither figure guarantees that every computer will achieve those speeds, or that the drive will sustain them throughout a very long transfer.

USB4, Thunderbolt 4, and slower USB connections
To approach the PD40 Mini’s headline performance, connect it directly to a computer with a compatible USB4 port. TeamGroup also lists compatibility with Thunderbolt 4. A USB-C connector by itself is not proof that a port supports USB4, Thunderbolt, or 40Gbps operation.

The drive is advertised as backward-compatible with USB 3.2 and USB 2.0 devices, but backward compatibility only means the drive can connect. It does not make those slower interfaces perform like USB4. TeamGroup notes that USB 3.2 cable operation can be limited to up to 10Gbps.

- Check the computer’s exact port specification rather than relying on the shape of the connector.
- Confirm whether it supports USB4, Thunderbolt 4, USB 3.2, or only USB 2.0.
- Use the included USB4-capable cable or another cable rated for the required speed.
- Connect the SSD directly to the computer during initial testing.
- Avoid hubs, docks, and monitors when diagnosing slow performance because they may share bandwidth or negotiate a lower mode.
- Keep the operating system and host firmware current.
TeamGroup’s compatibility sheet gives example systems and warns that results can vary. It should be viewed as an illustrative reference, not a universal guarantee for every USB4 computer.
What do the read and write figures mean?
Sequential speeds describe large, orderly transfers such as copying video files, disk images, or a photo library. They are not a complete measure of drive responsiveness.
- Sequential read: retrieving large contiguous files from the SSD.
- Sequential write: saving large contiguous files to the SSD.
- Random performance: handling many small files and application-level operations.
- Sustained performance: the speed maintained during a long transfer after caching, heat, or other limits become relevant.
Short benchmark runs may benefit from write caching. Large transfers can slow when a cache fills or the drive heats up. TeamGroup lists both DRAM cache and TBW endurance as “N/A” in the reviewed specification table. That does not prove the drive has no caching mechanism or poor endurance; it means those details are not publicly specified there. The reviewed material also does not identify the controller or NAND type.

What does IP54 protect against?
The PD40 Mini is rated IP54. In that rating:
- 5 indicates limited protection against dust ingress.
- 4 indicates protection against water splashes from various directions under the relevant test conditions.
TeamGroup says the rating was independently tested under IEC 60529 and applies when the product is not operating. A silicone cover helps protect the USB-C port from dust and splashes.

Do not use the drive underwater, connect it while wet, or treat it as suitable for swimming, diving, heavy rain, saltwater, mud, condensation, or prolonged exposure. Keep the port cover closed, dry the drive and connector before use, and remember that IP54 is not impact protection. The rating also does not protect against drops, crushing, connector damage, or data loss.

Advertised capacity is not identical to usable file space. TeamGroup calculates gigabytes and terabytes using decimal units, while operating systems may display lower figures after formatting and because of different unit conventions.
Who should consider the PD40 Mini?
The drive is potentially compelling if you have a USB4 or Thunderbolt 4 laptop and frequently move large files. Suitable uses include temporary video-editing projects, 4K or high-bitrate footage, photo offloads, large software libraries, and portable work files.
Its 22g weight and small dimensions are useful for travel. IP54 protection adds some protection against ordinary dust and splashes, provided the drive is not operating when exposed and the port cover is properly closed.

Who should skip it?
Consider a slower or differently ruggedized drive if:
- Your computer has only USB 2.0, 5Gbps USB, or another interface that will bottleneck the SSD.
- You mainly store documents, backups, or media where 1,000–2,000MB/s is already sufficient.
- You need verified drop resistance or water-submersion protection.
- You need more than 4TB in one portable drive.
- You require a published TBW rating, disclosed NAND and controller, or independently verified sustained-write performance.
A USB4 SSD also may not be the best value for routine backups if your host cannot use its extra bandwidth.

The ProGrade Digital PG10.5 Pro Mini is a relevant comparison because its listed headline figures are also up to 4,000MB/s read and 3,500MB/s write. Its retailer description gives more explicit sustained-write positioning, but pricing and specifications should be checked for the exact capacity and region before buying.
The Samsung T9, listed with USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 connectivity and up to 2,000MB/s read performance, and the SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD V2, listed with up to 1,050MB/s read and 1,000MB/s write, are more conventional alternatives. They may be adequate for ordinary USB-C workflows but are not direct USB4-performance substitutes.
Within TeamGroup’s range, the PD20 and PD20 ECO are lower-speed options. They make more sense when the host is not USB4-capable or when the workload does not justify USB4 pricing. The right comparison is the live price of each drive in the same capacity, not the interface label alone.

Warranty and data-safety considerations
TeamGroup lists a five-year limited warranty for the PD40 Mini. Coverage concerns material and manufacturing defects under normal use and may vary by country or state. Environmental damage, incompatible hardware configurations, and certain misuse scenarios may be excluded.
Keep the purchase receipt and confirm the terms for your sales region. A hardware warranty is not a data-recovery guarantee, so important files should always exist in another location.
Verdict
The TeamGroup PD40 Mini is a promisingly small USB4 external SSD for users with USB4 or Thunderbolt 4 systems and a genuine need for fast large-file transfers. Its official headline specifications are up to 4,000MB/s sequential read, 3,500MB/s sequential write, approximately 22g weight, and IP54 dust and splash resistance.
However, “22Gbps” is not established by the official product pages reviewed. The meaningful claims are the up-to-40Gbps USB4 interface and the manufacturer’s maximum sequential figures. Actual performance will depend on the host, cable, software, workload, and thermal conditions, while independent sustained-performance evidence and endurance details remain limited.
