Synaptics announced the Katana Edge AI evaluation kit on March 28, 2022, positioning it as a developer platform for building and prototyping low-power, on-device machine-learning products. The company demonstrated the kit at the tinyML Summit held March 28–30, 2022, with examples including instrument-meter reading and people detection and counting. This was an evaluation kit for IoT developers—not a consumer AI product or a current product launch.
What is the Synaptics Katana Edge AI Kit?
The Katana EVK is a development and prototyping platform built around Synaptics’ low-power Katana system-on-chip (SoC). Synaptics designed it to process AI workloads locally, combining vision, sound, voice and motion inputs with wired and wireless connectivity for edge-IoT products. The company’s launch announcement is dated March 28, 2022: Synaptics Katana EVK launch release.
What does the Katana EVK include?
The announced kit was intended to let a development team move from sensor experiments to an integrated prototype without assembling every hardware element separately. Synaptics listed these major components:
- A Katana SoC baseboard with an on-chip neural-network engine.
- Imaging, audio, voice and motion sensors.
- A Synaptics wireless module supporting Wi-Fi and Bluetooth Low Energy.
- A people-detection mounting bar and overhead-camera clips.
- Cabling, batteries and an enclosure.
- Instructions and supporting software.
The combination is significant because it supports sensor fusion: an application can use more than one signal—such as a camera feed plus audio or motion—to make an edge decision. The launch release does not provide a price, measured inference speed, accuracy figures, power test conditions or a component-level specification table, so those should not be inferred from the kit description.

What could developers build with it?
Vision and counting
Synaptics demonstrated reading an instrument-meter display and detecting or counting people. The company also described occupancy-related applications for buildings and monitoring systems. These are vendor-described demonstrations and target use cases, not independent benchmarks of recognition accuracy.
Audio and voice interfaces
The broader tinyML Summit material associated Katana with sound-event detection, keyword spotting and speech processing. Those workloads can support local alarms, hands-free controls and event classification without sending every raw audio stream to a cloud service.

Industrial and monitoring IoT
Synaptics named smart-home, building, industrial and monitoring applications. The later Edge Impulse announcement expanded the example list to object and pattern recognition, fall detection, asset or inventory tracking, digital meter reading and environmental sensing: the September 2022 Edge Impulse Studio announcement.
What happened at tinyML Summit?
The Katana announcement coincided with Synaptics’ tinyML Summit presence on March 28–30, 2022. The company said it would show live demonstrations and hold technical sessions covering vision, sound-event detection, keyword spotting, speech processing and people counting. Its Summit overview also discussed Katana and the separate DBM10L SoC, both of which Synaptics described as having dedicated on-chip neural-network inference engines. DBM10L was part of the broader showcase, not a component of the Katana EVK: Synaptics’ tinyML Summit announcement.

How were custom models developed?
Synaptics announced an Edge Impulse partnership in September 2021 for creating, training and deploying custom edge models: partnership announcement. On September 1, 2022, it said the Katana EVK was available in Edge Impulse Studio. Developers could bring their own application datasets into the web-based Studio, train models and optimize them for Katana, then deploy models for voice, vision, sound and other sensor inputs.
- Collect data representing the intended environment and sensor inputs.
- Use the dataset in Edge Impulse Studio to create and train a model.
- Optimize the trained model for the Katana target.
- Deploy and evaluate the model on the EVK, then refine the data or model as needed.
The cited announcements establish this workflow existed in 2022. They do not establish current Edge Impulse pricing, present-day Studio compatibility, supported firmware versions or whether the same hardware remains commercially available.

Was the Katana kit available to buy?
Synaptics said in its March 2022 launch release that the Edge AI EVK was “available now through Synaptics’ sales channels” and directed prospective customers to a local Synaptics sales representative. That statement documents historical availability at launch; it does not confirm current stock, a current distributor, a price or product lifecycle status.
If you are checking secondary marketplaces, Synaptics Katana Edge AI evaluation kit is an appropriate Amazon search phrase, but the announcement provides no confirmed Amazon listing. For a legitimate purchase inquiry, start with Synaptics’ sales-channel guidance in the original launch release and ask specifically about current availability, revision, included accessories and software support.

Bottom line for developers
The Katana EVK was Synaptics’ 2022 answer to a specific development problem: how to prototype low-power edge AI that combines vision, audio, voice and motion with local neural-network inference and IoT connectivity. Its strongest documented value is the breadth of the hardware bundle and the path from a developer’s own dataset to a Katana-optimized model through Edge Impulse Studio. Anyone evaluating it now should treat the launch availability, event demonstrations and software integration as historical claims and verify current hardware and tool support directly with Synaptics or authorized channels.
