Do not polish, scrape, erase, or chemically dissolve the mark. A clean, dry microfiber cloth may remove loose Styrofoam dust or superficial transfer. If that does not work, the mark may be damage to the screen’s anti-glare or anti-reflective surface rather than dirt—and it is usually not safely repairable at home.
For a new TV, photograph the condition and contact the retailer promptly before attempting repeated cleaning. More rubbing can turn a small problem into a larger coating defect.
First determine what you are seeing
“Styrofoam scratch” can describe several different problems:

- Loose white foam dust
- Foam residue or transfer
- A fingerprint, packing-film smear, or adhesive residue
- A scratch in the outer surface
- A cloudy or shiny patch caused by damage to the anti-glare or anti-reflective coating
- Pressure damage that appears only when the TV is off
- A protective film that has not been removed
Turn the TV off and inspect it under diffuse or indirect light. Do not rub while inspecting. A mark that changes with the viewing angle or visibly sits on top of the panel may be residue. A broad hazy, matte, or unusually shiny area that remains unchanged is more consistent with surface or coating damage.

Check for a factory protective film
Some televisions—particularly certain LG OLED models and replacement panels—have a removable transport film. Look for a clearly marked pull tab or an obvious film edge, then follow the instructions for your exact model. LG’s guidance is available in its screen-protection-film instructions.
Do not assume every TV has such a film, and do not lift an unmarked layer. The visible screen coating may be part of the display assembly, and peeling it can cause permanent damage.
The safest cleaning method
- Turn the TV off.
- Unplug it from the wall and let the screen cool if it was operating.
- Use a clean, soft, lint-free microfiber cloth to remove loose dust.
- Wipe with almost no pressure, preferably in one direction rather than vigorous circular scrubbing.
- If the mark remains and your TV’s manual permits moisture, barely dampen the cloth with distilled water. Wring it thoroughly first.
- Gently wipe the affected area once.
- Immediately use a second clean, dry microfiber cloth to remove moisture.
Never spray liquid directly onto the screen. Keep moisture away from the lower edge, bezel seams, vents, controls, and connectors. Manufacturer guidance from Sony, Samsung, and LG emphasizes minimal pressure, suitable microfiber cloths, and no direct spraying. Check your model-specific manual because cleaning instructions vary.

What not to use
Do not use any of the following to “remove” the mark:
- Paper towels, tissues, napkins, toilet paper, or rough household rags
- Magic Eraser or other melamine foam
- Fingernails, plastic cards, razor blades, or scrapers
- Toothpaste, baking soda, automotive polish, metal polish, or plastic polish
- Glass cleaner or window cleaner
- Alcohol, acetone, benzene, ammonia, thinner, or other solvents unless the exact manufacturer instructions expressly permit them
- Soap, dish detergent, wax, or abrasive screen-cleaning compounds
- Compressed air or a vacuum nozzle pressed against the panel
These products can scratch the surface, dissolve or haze its coating, leave residue, or spread a small defect. A “TV scratch remover” is not a safe general solution: polishing may remove or alter the optical coating instead of repairing it.
Residue, coating damage, or panel damage?
More likely removable residue
- The mark visibly becomes smaller after a gentle dry-cloth pass.
- It looks greasy, dusty, or raised above the surface.
- Its appearance changes substantially at different angles.
- The screen’s gloss and texture look uniform around it.
More likely coating or surface damage
- The mark remains unchanged after one or two gentle cleaning passes.
- It is a broad cloudy, hazy, matte, or shiny patch rather than a simple line.
- It follows the shape or contact area of the foam packaging.
- The surface reflects light differently in the affected area.
- It is most visible with the TV off or on dark scenes.
- Rubbing makes the affected region larger or changes its reflectivity.
More likely panel damage
- The picture has lines, dead pixels, bright or dark spots, or discoloration.
- There is a dent, crack, or visible impact point.
- The problem changes when the TV is powered on.
- The panel was pressed, flexed, or struck during unpacking or moving.
People often use “scratch” loosely. A true scratch, coating abrasion, and internal panel defect are different faults, but the safe home response is the same: do not abrade the surface or apply chemicals.

What if the mark appears only when the TV is off?
That does not prove the TV is undamaged. Reflections, haze, and changes to an anti-reflective coating can be easier to see on a black screen or under room lighting. A mark that disappears during normal viewing may still be worth reporting if the TV is new.
Excessive pressure can also temporarily disturb liquid-crystal alignment and create a dirty-looking optical effect. Sony notes that this type of pressure-related appearance may recover after turning the TV off and on. That does not mean a rubbed or damaged coating will heal.
When to stop cleaning
Stop immediately if the mark is not improving, the shiny or cloudy area is spreading, the cloth catches on a rough point, or you feel tempted to press harder. Also stop if a chemical has already been applied and the appearance is changing.

Cleaning can remove residue; it cannot safely restore a damaged optical coating. Repeated wiping is more likely to enlarge the defect than remove it.

Preserve your options before doing anything else:
- Photograph the mark in indirect light and from several angles.
- Photograph the entire TV, the carton, foam supports, packing materials, and the model and serial labels.
- Record when the TV was unpacked and when the mark was noticed.
- Do not continue cleaning.
- Contact the retailer first if you are within its return or damage-reporting period.
- Contact the manufacturer if the retailer directs you there or the retailer’s window has closed.
- Ask whether the condition is being classified as shipping damage, cosmetic damage, coating damage, or panel damage.
- Request written confirmation before paying for a repair or replacement panel.
Return and warranty coverage depends on the retailer, manufacturer, country, purchase date, and classification of the damage. Do not assume a standard warranty covers cosmetic scratches or coating damage.

A repair shop may be able to diagnose whether the issue is residue, coating damage, or panel damage. A damaged coating is generally not restored by cleaning or polishing. The practical repair may require replacing the entire display panel, and that can be uneconomical depending on the TV’s model, age, size, region, parts availability, and labor cost.

Get a model-specific diagnosis and written quote rather than attempting DIY polishing. If the picture works normally but the surface is visibly altered, compare the repair cost with the TV’s replacement value.
Preventing foam marks during moving or storage
- Use the original packaging and fit the foam supports exactly as intended.
- Prevent foam from rubbing directly against an exposed screen.
- Never place weight or pressure on the panel.
- Keep vinyl and rubber materials from touching the TV for long periods; Sony warns that these materials can deteriorate finishes.
- Transport the TV upright when the manufacturer’s packaging instructions require it.
