Going into the fixture, Southampton’s January 30 preview framed it as a match with play-off significance for both sides. Stoke had dropped to 10th after a winless run. Southampton were looking to build on a 1-0 win over Sheffield United and a 1-1 draw at Portsmouth, which had ended a seven-game league run without a win.
