Stellar Data Recovery for Android is a legitimate Windows desktop utility from Stellar Information Technology, but it cannot guarantee recovery of your files. Check backups and Recently Deleted folders first, stop using the phone, then use the free scan to see whether the specific files you need appear in a usable preview. Stellar says its trial can recover up to 10 photo or video files, each no larger than 10 MB. Its broad recovery claims are not proof that a particular file—or data lost after a factory reset—can be restored.
One naming trap: the official Stellar product is Windows software, not the similarly named “StellarRecovery” app on Google Play, which is published by SkyFusion Labs.
What is Stellar Data Recovery for Android?
It is a Windows program published by Stellar Information Technology, designed to connect to an Android phone or tablet and scan for data. Stellar provides an official product page, a purchase page, a support center, and a listing in the Microsoft Marketplace. Those establish the product’s identity and availability; they do not independently establish its recovery success rate.

What does Stellar say it can recover?
Stellar advertises recovery from Android internal storage and, for some WhatsApp cases, Google Drive backups. Its listed data types include:
- Photos, videos, audio and music
- Documents such as PDF, Word, Excel and PowerPoint files
- Contacts, call history and text messages
- WhatsApp chats, media and attachments, including WhatsApp Business attachments
The vendor also markets the software for accidental deletion, emptied Recently Deleted folders, factory resets, OS crashes or updates, malware-related loss, broken screens and unresponsive devices. These are advertised scenarios, not guarantees. A scan listing may be incomplete, corrupted, duplicated, or impossible to export; preview the exact files you need and open samples before paying.

Root access and internal storage
Stellar says root is not required. That does not mean the software has unrestricted access to every file: device authorization, USB access, the phone’s lock state, encryption and its condition can all affect what a computer can see. The product page advertises internal-memory scanning, but a scan result is not proof that a deleted original remains intact and recoverable.
Modern Android security and storage behavior can limit access to deleted data. If a file has been overwritten, is in an inaccessible encrypted area, or was lost in a factory reset, software may not be able to restore it. Stellar itself advises stopping phone use after deletion because new data can overwrite recoverable material.

WhatsApp and Google Drive
Stellar advertises WhatsApp recovery from local data and Google Drive backups. According to its product FAQ, encrypted WhatsApp chats in Google Drive may have recovery limitations on Android 15 and 16 because of WhatsApp and Android security policies. Do not treat this as a way to bypass end-to-end encryption. A Google Drive backup must exist and remain accessible.
Check WhatsApp’s normal backup and restore options before reinstalling the app or changing its data. Reinstallation can complicate matters if you have not confirmed a usable backup.

What to do before scanning
- Stop using the phone. Do not take new photos, download files, install apps or repeatedly reboot it. Continued use may reduce the chance that deleted data remains recoverable.
- Check the simple recovery locations first. Look in Google Photos Trash or Bin, the Gallery or Files app’s Recently Deleted folder, cloud services you use, and device backups. If the files were on a microSD card, check the card separately.
- For WhatsApp, check its backup status and normal restore route. Avoid deleting app data or reinstalling until you know whether a backup exists and can be accessed.
- Decide whether DIY recovery is appropriate. If the phone is dead, severely damaged, cannot be unlocked, or holds irreplaceable evidence, repeated software attempts may be a poor first move; consider a professional recovery service.
How to try Stellar safely
The exact screens and prompts can vary by product build, Android version and manufacturer. Use the following as a practical sequence, not as a promise that every phone will connect or expose the same options.

- Prepare a Windows computer. Check the requirements below and have a reliable, data-capable USB cable. Make sure you have separate storage available for recovered files.
- Download the desktop program from Stellar’s official product page. Avoid APK sites and apps with similar names.
- Connect and authorize the phone. Keep it powered on if possible and respond to any Android connection or permission prompts. The program may request device-access settings; follow its current instructions rather than assuming a universal menu path.
- If the phone is not detected, troubleshoot the connection. Stellar recommends trying another USB port or cable and installing the phone manufacturer’s Windows USB driver.
- Choose the offered device or recovery option and scan. Filter by data type if available, then inspect the specific items you hope to recover. A large scan count alone is not a reason to pay.
- Preview files and check usability. Open photo or document samples and look for incomplete content, duplicates, generic fragments or thumbnails instead of originals.
- Save recovered data to the computer or another drive. Do not write it back to the affected phone, where it could overwrite other data.
If the phone cannot power on, cannot be authorized, or is not recognized after basic cable and driver checks, stop repeating the same attempts. Hardware failure and inaccessible locked devices are different problems from ordinary accidental deletion.

Free trial: what the limit means
Stellar describes its free edition as allowing scans and previews, plus recovery of up to 10 photo or video files, with a maximum of 10 MB per file. It is not unlimited free recovery, and the stated file allowance does not cover unrestricted recovery of every advertised data type. Use the trial chiefly to test whether the files you need appear and open correctly. The Microsoft Marketplace listing also describes a free trial and notes that offer terms may vary.
Compatibility and computer requirements
Stellar’s current purchase page lists Android 6 through Android 16. It names Samsung, Asus, OPPO, Vivo, Xiaomi, OnePlus and Google Pixel among supported brands. Brand-level compatibility does not guarantee support for every model, carrier configuration or software build; do not extrapolate support beyond Android 16.

Price and value
The official purchase page displayed a one-year Standard license at €29.99, reduced from €59.99, and an Android + iPhone bundle at €44.99, reduced from €119.99, when accessed for this article. These are localized, time-sensitive prices, not universal quotes: another localized rendering displayed different pound prices. Currency, discounts, taxes and final checkout terms can vary by location and date, so check the official checkout page for your region before deciding. A one-year license may be poor value for a one-time emergency if the scan cannot recover the needed files.
The sensible purchase test is straightforward: use the official trial, confirm that the exact files you need appear in a usable preview, and pay only if the free allowance is insufficient and backups have not solved the problem.
