Short answer: Steel.dev is an open-source browser API delivered as cloud browser sessions. Its most relevant alternatives are Browserbase, Browserless and Kernel, but they solve different deployment and workflow problems. Choose by the amount of infrastructure you want to operate, how portable your Playwright or CDP code must remain, whether authenticated state persists, what debugging evidence you need, and how usage is metered. The comparison below is based mainly on Steel-authored product comparisons, not an independent performance benchmark, so verify current capabilities and prices in each vendor’s documentation before committing.
What Steel.dev provides
Steel presents itself as an open-source browser API for cloud browser sessions. You create a remote browser, connect automation code to it, and let Steel operate the browser infrastructure rather than installing Chrome and its dependencies on every worker.
Playwright and CDP access
Steel documents Playwright connections to remote sessions over the Chrome DevTools Protocol (CDP). That makes an existing Playwright workflow a useful starting point: the application still drives a Chromium session, while the browser runs in Steel’s cloud. The retrieved integration documentation lists Node.js 20 or newer, or Python 3.10 or newer, together with the corresponding Playwright package.
Open-source runtime versus hosted operation
The runtime is open source, while Steel also offers a hosted service. That distinction matters. A hosted session can reduce operational work; an open runtime gives your team a path to inspect, adapt or operate more of the stack. Confirm the current license, supported deployment targets and parity between self-operated and hosted features before treating “open source” as full self-hosting equivalence.

Pricing is not a stable comparison point
Steel’s pricing and credit terms have changed. Its June 26, 2026 pricing announcement described three plans on a shared metering model and mentioned a promotional Launch credit. Those terms are time-sensitive; use the live pricing page and your expected session pattern to calculate cost. Do not use an old plan table as a long-term budget assumption.
The alternatives at a glance
| Service | Position in the available comparisons | Best initial question | Evidence qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Steel.dev | Cloud browser API with an open-source runtime and Playwright/CDP access | How much control do we want over the browser stack? | Capabilities and pricing should be checked in current Steel documentation. |
| Browserbase | Managed browser and agent platform | Do we want an agent layer bundled with managed browsers? | Deployment, persistence, observability and pricing distinctions come from Steel’s vendor-authored comparison. |
| Browserless | Headless browser API with BrowserQL, REST endpoints and Docker options | Do we need a focused API or a deployable image? | The positioning is from Steel’s comparison, not an independent test. |
| Kernel | Serverless browser platform | Does its current serverless model fit bursty jobs? | The retrieved material is insufficient for a detailed feature or price assessment; verify Kernel’s own current documentation. |
Compare deployment and infrastructure control
Managed-only convenience
A managed provider is attractive when your team wants to submit jobs, receive a browser endpoint and avoid patching operating systems, browser binaries, fonts, sandbox settings and scaling policies. The trade-off is dependence on the provider’s regions, limits, supported browser versions and incident procedures. Ask whether you can export profiles, logs and recordings if you later migrate.
Self-hosting and deployment choices
Steel’s open runtime makes it the obvious candidate to investigate when deployment control is a requirement. Browserless is described in the comparison as offering Docker as well as hosted API access, which may suit teams that want a familiar container deployment model. “Docker available” does not by itself establish production parity, autoscaling, security updates or support; validate those details directly.
Serverless primitives
Kernel is listed as a serverless option. Serverless browser infrastructure can be a good fit for irregular demand because capacity follows jobs rather than a permanently running pool. Check cold-start behavior, maximum session duration, concurrency limits, regional availability and how browser state survives between invocations.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsPortability: CDP, Playwright and agent layers
Portability is more than whether a vendor has a Playwright SDK. Determine whether your code talks to standard browser protocols or to a provider-specific workflow engine.
- Standard automation: CDP and Playwright patterns make it easier to move selectors, assertions and navigation logic between hosted browser providers.
- Provider-specific APIs: BrowserQL or an agent-oriented abstraction can reduce code for common tasks, but migration may require rewriting workflows.
- AI-agent integration: A managed agent platform can provide tools, session orchestration and policy controls. Decide whether those are core requirements or conveniences you could build around a lower-level browser endpoint.
- Browser version policy: Ask how quickly each service exposes new Chromium releases and whether pinning is possible for reproducible tests.
Run a small portability exercise before procurement: launch a session, authenticate, navigate a multi-step flow, download a file, capture console and network errors, and terminate the session using only documented interfaces. Record every provider-specific call your code needs.

State and authenticated workflows
State determines whether a browser service can perform useful work after the first page load. Clarify the difference between a session that remains alive for one job and a persistent profile that can be reused later.
Questions to ask every vendor
- Can cookies, local storage and IndexedDB survive a session restart?
- Can profiles be isolated per customer, tenant or workflow?
- How are encrypted secrets and session exports handled?
- What happens to state when a session expires or a job is cancelled?
- Can a workflow resume after a browser or worker failure?
Steel’s comparison highlights persistence as a decision axis, but the retrieved material does not establish identical profile features or retention periods across vendors. Browserbase, Browserless and Kernel should therefore be tested with your real login flow rather than compared by a generic “supports state” checkbox.
Observability and evidence for failures
Browser automation fails in ways that ordinary server logs cannot explain: a consent dialog covers a button, a challenge page replaces the expected form, a third-party script stalls, or a redirect changes the origin. Before choosing a provider, establish which evidence is available for a failed run.
Useful evidence
- Live browser viewing for an operator diagnosing a stuck job.
- Video or step recordings that show what the page displayed.
- Full-page and viewport screenshots at meaningful checkpoints.
- Browser console, network and page-error logs.
- Session identifiers that let support staff locate the same run.
- Downloadable artifacts with retention and access controls you understand.
Steel’s vendor-authored comparison treats observability as a differentiator, but it does not provide an independent measurement of debugging quality. Make evidence a contractual and operational requirement: define retention, redaction, access permissions and the maximum time your team can retrieve artifacts after a failure.
How to evaluate pricing and metering
Do not compare a headline monthly allowance with another provider’s per-minute number until you know what is actually metered. Browser services may count browser minutes, session minutes, compute, concurrent sessions, proxy traffic, storage, requests or a combination.
Build a workload model
- Measure the number of jobs per day and the 95th-percentile duration, not just the average.
- Separate browser-active time from queue, startup and idle time.
- Count concurrent sessions during normal peaks and incident retries.
- Include authenticated profile storage, proxy or bandwidth charges, recordings and retained artifacts if applicable.
- Model failed attempts, CAPTCHA or bot-check flows and scheduled retries.
- Calculate a quiet-month and a peak-month bill, then add the cost of operating any self-hosted components.
Steel’s June 2026 announcement included promotional credit language, including a Launch credit and a deposit condition associated with CAPTCHA solving. Treat those as promotional terms, not a durable cross-vendor statistic, and confirm whether they still exist before relying on them.

Which alternative fits which workload?
Choose Steel.dev when control and open runtime access matter
Start with Steel when you want a cloud browser API but also value an open-source runtime and a documented Playwright-over-CDP path. It is a reasonable candidate for teams that want to keep automation code close to standard browser tooling while investigating more control over deployment. Validate hosted-versus-self-operated feature parity, profile behavior and current pricing.
Choose Browserbase when a managed agent platform is the priority
Browserbase is the alternative to investigate when you want managed remote browsers paired with agent-oriented capabilities. Confirm which plan includes the observability, persistence, concurrency and policy controls your agents require. A managed agent layer may shorten initial development, but it can also increase dependence on provider-specific abstractions.
Choose Browserless when you want a focused API or Docker path
Browserless is positioned in the comparison as a headless browser API with BrowserQL, REST endpoints and Docker. It deserves evaluation for teams that prefer a specialized browser service, want to retain conventional automation code, or need a container option. Test how much state management, evidence capture and queueing you must assemble yourself.
Investigate Kernel for bursty serverless workloads
Kernel appears in the available material as a serverless platform, making it worth a direct review for workloads that start and stop unpredictably. The retrieved evidence does not support a detailed ranking of its browser features, persistence, debugging or prices. Obtain those details from Kernel’s current documentation and run the same authenticated-flow test used for every candidate.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →ScreenshotNeo: an alternative for screenshot-only jobs
If your requirement is to render a URL as an image or PDF rather than operate a long-lived browser agent, ScreenshotNeo is the first service to try. It is a website screenshot API and MCP server: one GET request returns PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF, while consent banners, newsletter popups and chat widgets are removed before capture. Only clean shots are billed; bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing result.

r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
ScreenshotNeo also supports full-page and element captures, dark mode, device presets and custom viewports, retina scale, PDF paper settings and page ranges, custom CSS and JavaScript, pre-capture clicks, selector waits, network-idle waits, ad and tracker blocking, custom headers and cookies, user-agent and authorization settings, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, configurable cache TTLs, signed image links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API and an OpenAPI specification. Its MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf to Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients.

Operational checklist before you switch
- Define whether you need screenshots, scripted browser control, scraping, tests or an uncertain-path AI agent.
- List required regions, browser versions, proxy or geolocation behavior and maximum concurrency.
- Test login, MFA, file upload, download, popup handling and CAPTCHA outcomes with non-production credentials.
- Verify persistent-profile isolation and deletion procedures.
- Capture a failed run and confirm that logs, screenshots, recordings and network evidence are retrievable.
- Calculate cost using your measured active time, retries, storage and peak concurrency.
- Run a migration exercise using standard Playwright/CDP calls and document every proprietary dependency.
- Review data retention, encryption, support response, incident history and exit options with procurement and security teams.
Troubleshooting common evaluation failures
The page is blank or never reaches the expected selector
Check the target URL, redirects, JavaScript errors, blocked resources, regional restrictions and required wait condition. Compare a fixed delay with a selector or network-idle wait; a delay that works once may fail under load.
Authentication disappears between jobs
You are probably using an ephemeral session or an incorrectly scoped profile. Verify cookie and storage persistence, profile ownership and expiry rules, then test two jobs with separate identities to ensure isolation.
An agent gets stuck on a consent dialog or challenge page
Capture a screenshot and browser log at the point of failure. Determine whether the provider supports the required interaction, whether your automation must explicitly handle the dialog, and whether the site’s terms permit the workflow. Do not treat a successful local run as evidence that a hosted region will behave identically.
The bill is higher than expected
Inspect session duration, idle time, retries, concurrency, proxy or bandwidth charges and retained artifacts. Re-run the workload model with peak rather than average duration and ask the vendor for an itemized usage export.

Bottom line
Steel.dev is the strongest starting point when an open-source runtime, cloud sessions and Playwright/CDP portability are central. Browserbase is the candidate to examine for a managed browser-plus-agent platform; Browserless for a focused API with BrowserQL, REST and Docker choices; and Kernel for a serverless model that must be validated directly. No source here establishes a universal winner or independent performance advantage. Choose only after testing your authenticated workflow, evidence requirements and real metering model.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are these products interchangeable for every browser automation task?
No. A screenshot API, a scripted browser session and an AI-agent platform have different requirements for state, control, evidence and cost. Classify the workload before comparing vendors.
Does open source mean I can run every Steel feature myself?
Not necessarily. Confirm the runtime license, deployment instructions and feature parity between Steel’s hosted service and any self-operated deployment.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
How should I compare a serverless browser with a persistent browser pool?
Measure startup latency, session duration, concurrency, profile persistence and idle cost using the same workflow. A serverless model may suit bursty jobs, while a pool can favor long or stateful sessions.
What should a proof of concept record?
Record successful and failed runs, startup and end-to-end latency, evidence available after failure, profile behavior, concurrency, retries and itemized usage. Do not infer performance from a single happy-path run.
