SteamVR Settings controls the PC VR runtime’s video quality, refresh rate, audio routing, room setup, tracking tools, OpenXR runtime, controller bindings, and troubleshooting features. Open it from SteamVR menu → Settings after SteamVR is running.
The best starting point is simple: leave global resolution on Auto, use a stable refresh rate, keep Motion Smoothing at its default behavior, and tune demanding games through Per-Application Video Settings. The exact controls vary by SteamVR version, headset, connection method, and operating system.
How to open SteamVR Settings
- Open Steam and connect or power on your headset.
- Launch SteamVR from the Steam Library, or let it start when Steam detects the headset.
- Open the SteamVR status window.
- Select the SteamVR menu and choose Settings.
Valve says SteamVR can install automatically when Steam detects a connected headset, although it can also be installed manually from Steam’s software library. If Settings or headset controls are missing, first confirm that SteamVR is running and that the headset appears in the status window. Restart SteamVR, reboot the headset, check USB and DisplayPort or HDMI connections, and restart Steam if necessary. See Valve’s SteamVR documentation and its headset-detection troubleshooting steps.

SteamVR is only one layer of a PC VR setup:
- SteamVR: runtime behavior, render resolution, refresh rate, Motion Smoothing, audio routing, room data, tracking diagnostics, and some controller configuration.
- Headset software: Meta Quest Link, Steam Link, Virtual Desktop, VIVE Console, the PS VR2 app, Windows Mixed Reality, or another manufacturer-specific application. These may control bitrate, codec, wireless quality, boundary settings, and headset-side resolution.
- The game: shadows, reflections, volumetrics, anti-aliasing, graphics quality, in-game supersampling, and frame-rate limits.
- Windows and the GPU: drivers, power settings, USB behavior, GPU selection, and display connections.
That division explains why changing SteamVR resolution cannot fix every blurry image, wireless stutter, tracking problem, or audio fault.

SteamVR Video settings explained
Resolution and render scale
SteamVR’s resolution setting controls the rendered image sent to the headset. It is not simply the physical panel resolution, and 100% does not universally mean “native resolution.” SteamVR calculates a recommended render target based on the headset and runtime, so percentage values should not be compared directly between different headsets.
Increasing resolution can make text and distant objects clearer, but it raises GPU workload. Use this process:
- Open Settings → Video.
- Leave resolution on Auto, or select 100% if you want a predictable baseline.
- Run a representative, demanding game.
- Check frame timing and visual smoothness.
- Increase resolution gradually only while the system maintains the target frame rate.
For a GPU-limited system, lowering render resolution is usually the quickest performance improvement. With Quest, wireless headsets, or other streamed devices, also check codec, bitrate, Wi-Fi quality, USB throughput, and encoder load in the headset’s software.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Automatic resolution
Auto attempts to choose a render resolution appropriate for the detected headset and hardware. It is a good starting point, not a guarantee of ideal sharpness or performance in every game. Use per-game overrides when one title is unusually demanding or blurry.
Refresh rate
A higher refresh rate can make head movement feel smoother and may reduce perceived latency, but it gives the CPU and GPU less time to render each frame. A stable lower rate is generally preferable to an unstable maximum rate.
| Choice | Benefit | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Higher resolution | Sharper text and distant detail | More GPU load |
| Higher refresh rate | Smoother motion | Less render time per frame |
| Lower resolution | More performance headroom | Potentially blurrier image |
| Lower refresh rate | Easier performance target | Less fluid motion |
Motion Smoothing
Motion Smoothing is a reprojection-style feature that can make motion appear smoother when an application misses the headset’s native frame rate. It does not remove the underlying rendering workload and may introduce wobbling, distortions, or other interpolation artifacts.
Leave it at its default or automatic behavior initially. Test it per game and disable it if the artifacts are more distracting than ordinary frame drops. Do not assume SteamVR Motion Smoothing is identical to Meta’s Asynchronous Spacewarp, Virtual Desktop’s SSW, or another streaming system’s reprojection. Avoid stacking multiple reprojection systems unless the relevant software specifically supports that configuration.

Per-Application Video Settings
Global settings are convenient, but they force every game to use the same compromise. Per-game settings are usually better for a mixed library.

Recommended starting configurations
New setup
- Resolution: Auto.
- Refresh rate: headset default or a moderate supported rate.
- Motion Smoothing: default or automatic.
- Run Room Setup once.
- Do not change Developer options unless diagnosing a problem.
Performance-first
- Lower SteamVR per-eye resolution before changing many unrelated settings.
- Use a stable refresh rate rather than the maximum available.
- Reduce shadows, reflections, volumetrics, and supersampling in the game.
- Use Frame Timing to identify CPU or GPU limits.
- Apply difficult settings per game instead of lowering every title globally.
Image-quality-first
- Increase resolution gradually.
- Keep refresh rate at a level the system can sustain.
- Judge clarity inside the headset, not only by the percentage number.
- Watch for frame-time spikes and reprojection artifacts.
Audio, startup, and dashboard settings
SteamVR can select playback and recording devices, switch audio automatically when SteamVR starts or stops, and mirror headset audio to PC speakers for spectators. If audio is distorted or too quiet, check both SteamVR and Windows sound settings. Valve’s 16-bit/48 kHz advice applies to specific older Vive audio configurations, not every headset.
General settings may also include automatic startup when a headset is detected, dashboard behavior, Room View or camera behavior, headset behavior when Windows is locked, advanced-settings visibility, and runtime shutdown behavior. These are mainly convenience controls and normally will not fix low frame rates.
SteamVR shutting down does not necessarily stop a wireless bridge, headset service, or vendor application. Close those separately when troubleshooting background-process conflicts.
Room Setup and tracking
Use SteamVR menu → Run Room Setup after first installation, after moving base stations or the headset to another room, when the floor height is wrong, or when play-area boundaries are incorrect. A quicker calibration option may be available under Settings → Developer → Room and Tracking. Valve’s Room Setup guidance describes placing controllers flat and stable during floor calibration.
Tracking systems differ:
- Lighthouse/base-station headsets: check base-station placement, synchronization, firmware, cables, reflective surfaces, and USB or Link Box connections.
- Inside-out headsets: boundary and guardian data may be controlled primarily by the headset’s own software. Adequate lighting and a suitable environment matter.
- Standalone headsets used for PC VR: wireless quality, headset software, and network conditions can be as important as SteamVR settings.
Room Setup corrects calibration and play-space data; it cannot repair a loose cable, failing tracker, poor lighting, reflective surface, or wireless interference. Do not repeatedly recalibrate to compensate for a physical fault.
Developer settings worth using
Direct Mode
Settings → Developer → Enable Direct Mode is a Valve-recommended step for certain headset-detection, red-screen, and “compositor is not fullscreen” problems. It prevents compatible headsets from being treated like ordinary monitors. It is most relevant to PC-connected display headsets and older display-detection failures, not a universal fix for modern standalone-headset streaming.
See Valve’s guidance for red screens and compositor errors and Error 208.

Display Frame Timing
Open Settings → Performance → Display Frame Timing while running a demanding game. The graph helps identify whether frame-time spikes are primarily CPU- or GPU-related:
- GPU-bound: lower SteamVR resolution, reduce in-game graphics, or lower refresh rate.
- CPU-bound: reduce CPU-heavy settings, close background programs, check temperatures, and investigate driver or USB conflicts.
- Neither obvious: investigate wireless networking, overlays, compositor behavior, drivers, and headset-specific software.
Reset SteamVR USB devices
When ordinary connection checks fail, use Settings → Developer → Remove all SteamVR USB Devices. Valve’s procedure is intended for troubleshooting: disconnect the Link Box where applicable, close SteamVR, perform the reset, then reconnect the hardware. Do not unplug devices during a firmware update.
System Report
Use Settings → General → Create System Report → Save to File before contacting support. The report can provide useful information about hardware, drivers, and SteamVR configuration.

OpenXR runtime
OpenXR applications use an OpenXR runtime. SteamVR can be selected as the active runtime through its Developer controls, but SteamVR should not be chosen automatically for every headset or game. Some headset ecosystems provide their own runtime, and an application may launch through Steam while using a different OpenXR runtime.
Check the game or headset manufacturer’s instructions before changing the active runtime. If you change it, record the original setting so you can restore it.
Camera, base-station, and tracking-specific options
Camera bandwidth and camera enable/disable controls, base-station status, firmware, and Room and Tracking calibration are relevant only to certain hardware. For Lighthouse systems, Valve’s troubleshooting advice includes trying another USB port, checking base-station placement and synchronization, securing cables, and covering reflective surfaces. Temporarily disabling the headset camera may help isolate a camera-related tracking problem.
These steps should not be generalized to Quest, PS VR2 PC, or other inside-out tracking systems. Follow the headset maker’s setup requirements as well.

Troubleshooting by symptom
SteamVR cannot detect the headset
- Restart SteamVR and reboot the headset.
- Check USB, DisplayPort, HDMI, or wireless connections.
- Try a different USB port or reconnect the Link Box where applicable.
- Confirm the headset and monitor are connected to the same discrete GPU when required.
- Enable Direct Mode for display-detection problems.
- Restart Steam and Windows.
- Reset SteamVR USB devices only after ordinary connection checks fail.
- Verify SteamVR’s tool files through Steam.
Red screen or compositor not fullscreen
Enable Direct Mode, update the GPU driver, ensure another window is not covering the compositor, check the headset’s GPU connection, and restart SteamVR and the PC.
Low frame rate or freezing
Open Frame Timing first. Lower resolution and in-game graphics, disable unnecessary overlays, update GPU drivers, return CPU and GPU overclocks to stock settings, check temperatures, and verify SteamVR’s tool cache. If the problem is wireless, inspect network quality and the headset streaming application rather than changing only SteamVR.
Gray screen, drifting, or floating tracking
Run Room Setup, check base stations if using Lighthouse tracking, try another USB port, secure cables, cover reflective surfaces, check lighting, update firmware, and test in another room. Disable the headset camera temporarily only as a diagnostic step where that control exists.
Floor height is wrong
Run SteamVR → Run Room Setup and repeat the floor calibration carefully. You can also try Settings → Developer → Room and Tracking. Check whether a base station or headset has moved. Recalibration will not solve a physical tracking fault.
Audio is poor
Confirm SteamVR’s playback device, Windows’ default output, volume levels, and any automatic-switching option. For older Vive audio hardware, follow Valve’s device-specific Windows audio guidance rather than treating it as a universal requirement.
Controllers do not work correctly
Open the game’s SteamVR binding interface, try a recommended community binding, verify that the correct controller profile is selected, and restore the default binding if an edit caused the problem.

Linux-specific considerations
SteamVR on Linux has additional package, driver, compositor, and DRM-leasing requirements. Valve says unsupported Steam Snap and Steam Flatpak packages can interfere with DRM leasing and asynchronous reprojection. Its current support page specifies proprietary NVIDIA drivers at version 525 or newer, Mesa 22.0 or newer for AMD and Intel, and does not support AMDVLK or AMDGPU-Pro. GNOME Wayland is also not supported there because it lacks the required DRM-leasing support. Check Valve’s current Linux SteamVR requirements before troubleshooting a Linux installation.

Advanced diagnostic console
Valve’s OpenVR documentation identifies the local SteamVR web console at http://localhost:27062/console/index.html. It is intended for advanced diagnostics. Change one setting at a time and save a System Report before making difficult-to-reproduce changes.
System requirements in context
Valve’s support listing gives baseline requirements including Windows 10 or later, an Intel Core i5-4590 or AMD FX 8350 equivalent, a GTX 970 or Radeon R9 290 equivalent, 4 GB RAM, USB 2.0 or newer, and HDMI 1.4 or DisplayPort 1.2 or newer. It lists a GTX 1060 or RX 480 equivalent as a recommended GPU.
These are old baseline requirements, not a promise of acceptable performance in current VR games. The headset, game, render resolution, refresh rate, streaming method, and desired graphics quality can require substantially more.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best SteamVR resolution?
There is no universal percentage. Start with Auto, then increase or decrease resolution while watching frame timing in a representative game.
Should Motion Smoothing be enabled?
Leave it at its default or automatic setting initially. Test it per game and disable it if interpolation artifacts are more distracting than native frame drops.
Does SteamVR resolution affect Quest Link?
Yes, SteamVR resolution affects the rendered PC image, but Quest Link or another streaming layer also controls factors such as codec, bitrate, and headset-side quality.
Should SteamVR always be the OpenXR runtime?
No. The correct runtime depends on the game, headset, connection method, and vendor software. Follow the application or headset manufacturer’s instructions.
What does Direct Mode do?
It prevents compatible PC VR headsets from being treated as ordinary monitors and can help with certain display-detection and red-screen problems.
