Spotify is a streaming service for music and spoken-word content, including podcasts and audiobooks. To get started, open the Spotify app or Web Player, sign in or create an account, search for something to play, and save favorites to Your Library. A Spotify account is free; offline music downloads and some playback features require Premium. The steps below cover the main tasks, with notes where features or labels differ by device, country, account, or app version.
Quick start: play something on Spotify
- Install the official Spotify app on your phone or computer, or open the Web Player.
- Create an account or sign in. If your playlists or Premium benefits seem to be missing, check that you used the same account and login method as before; signing in with an email, Apple, Google, or another method can sometimes lead to a different account.
- Use Search to find a song, artist, album, playlist, podcast, episode, or audiobook.
- Open the result and select Play. Use the Now Playing controls to pause, skip, seek, shuffle, repeat, adjust volume, or choose an output device.
- Save content to Your Library, or create a playlist to organize music for a particular purpose.

Search for the right music or show
Search accepts titles, artist names, albums, playlists, podcasts, episodes, audiobooks, genres, and moods. A search can return several versions of a recording, such as a remaster, live performance, acoustic version, clean edit, or a playlist made by another user. If the result is not the one you meant, open the artist page, check the album artwork and release year, and look for an Explicit label or clean version as appropriate. Save the exact album, song, show, or playlist you want so you can find it in Your Library later.

When a track is playing, open the Now Playing view for its controls. Depending on the device and content, you may be able to play or pause, go to the previous or next track, seek within the track, turn shuffle or repeat on or off, view lyrics, adjust volume, and inspect or edit the Play Queue. The device or output selector lets you move playback to a compatible speaker, TV, computer, console, car system, or other device.

Free and Premium playback controls are not identical in every market or on every device. Spotify currently promotes more control over song order, repeats, and skips with Premium; Free-plan behavior may depend on the device, content type, region, and current product rules. See Spotify’s U.S. Premium page for the current plan description.
Save content and organize Your Library
Saving and downloading do different things:
- Save: adds content to Your Library for easier access while using Spotify. You can save a song or album, follow an artist or show, or save a playlist.
- Download: stores eligible Spotify content for offline playback inside the Spotify app. Music downloads require Premium; Free users can download podcasts.
To save something, open its page and choose the save, follow, or add control shown there. Then open Your Library and filter or sort by content type if those controls are available on your device. Use playlists when you want to arrange tracks around a mood, activity, or occasion. Saving a song alone does not make it available offline.
Create, edit, and share a playlist
- Choose the option to create a playlist from Your Library or the app menu. Give it a name.
- Open the playlist and use Add songs or the equivalent control to find tracks. You can also add a track from its menu.
- To remove a track, rename the playlist, or reorder songs, open the playlist’s options or editing controls. Available controls can differ by platform.
- Use the playlist’s sharing or privacy controls to decide whether it appears on your profile and who can access or contribute to it.
You can share a playlist or individual track, album, artist, or show using Spotify’s share option or your device’s share sheet. Recipients may need Spotify access, and a link may open differently depending on their device, account, region, and whether the content is available there. Collaborative playlists allow other people to contribute when collaboration is enabled; check the playlist’s current access settings before sharing.

Deleted playlists may be recoverable only under Spotify’s account conditions and within its recovery window. Use the recovery directions in Spotify Support rather than assuming a deleted playlist is recoverable indefinitely. On supported desktop platforms, playlist folders can help organize a large collection.
Use Spotify on another device
Spotify works through mobile and desktop apps, the Web Player, and supported connected devices. Exact support depends on the device, app version, and location. Spotify’s support site lists guidance for speakers, TVs, cars, gaming consoles, and wearables, including Apple Watch, Fitbit, Garmin, Samsung watches, and Wear OS.
To use Spotify Connect, start playback on one device, open the device or output selector, and choose a compatible device. The devices may need to be on the same network or signed into an appropriate account, depending on the setup. If the target is missing, check that both devices are online, compatible, updated, and permitted to communicate on the network.

Spotify Connect and Bluetooth are different. Connect lets Spotify control playback on a compatible network-connected device. Bluetooth pairs devices and sends audio over a short-range wireless connection. For a car, Apple CarPlay or Android Auto may have separate compatibility requirements. If Connect is unavailable, Bluetooth may be a practical alternative where supported.
Download Spotify content for offline listening
Premium users can download albums, playlists, and audiobooks for offline playback. Free users can download podcasts, but not music. Downloads stay within Spotify; they are not ordinary MP3 files or a purchase that you can transfer to another music player.
- Connect to the internet and sign in to the account with the eligible plan.
- Open the album, playlist, or audiobook you want and select Download.
- Wait for the download indicator or checkmark, then test playback before leaving Wi-Fi.
- Use Offline Mode if you want Spotify to play only content already saved to the device. The setting’s location and availability can vary.
Spotify’s current offline-download guidance lists a maximum of 10,000 songs per device across up to five devices, and says you must reconnect each device to the internet at least once every 30 days to keep downloads active. Spotify recommends at least 1 GB of free storage; actual space used depends on content and quality. Its Offline Backup feature can provide an offline-ready collection based on recently streamed music in compatible mobile use cases, but availability may differ by account or platform. If a download will not start or disappears, check that you are signed into the right Premium account, have free storage, are online, and have not reached the device limit. Update Spotify and reconnect. Before logging out or reinstalling, confirm that your account and playlists are synchronized; logging out or reinstalling can require downloads to be made again.
Useful Spotify settings
Open your profile picture or menu, choose Settings, and look under the relevant section. Labels and availability differ by platform and app version, and not every setting appears everywhere.
- Audio quality: adjust streaming and download quality. Higher quality can use more data and storage.
- Data Saver and mobile downloads: reduce data use or control whether downloads use cellular data. Use Wi-Fi if you want to avoid mobile-data charges.
- Volume normalization and equalizer: change perceived loudness or sound balance where supported.
- Autoplay, crossfade, and transitions: choose whether playback continues or tracks blend, if the controls are available.
- Explicit content: adjust explicit-content playback where the account and platform provide that control. Managed accounts may have different settings.
- Private listening and social controls: limit what appears in activity or on your profile; these are separate from playlist access settings.
- Storage, Offline Mode, notifications, language, video, and local files: review these when managing space, alerts, interface language, or locally stored audio. Local files are not the same as Spotify catalog downloads.
Free, Premium, and choosing a plan
Spotify Free is suitable if you listen occasionally, accept ads, and do not need offline music downloads. Premium is more useful if you want ad-free music, offline music, or greater playback control. Podcast downloads are available to Free users, while music downloads require Premium. Features and restrictions can vary by country, device, content, and current Spotify rules.

Change or cancel Premium
- Sign in to the Spotify account page using the account that holds the subscription.
- Open the plan or subscription section and select the option to change or cancel.
- Follow the confirmation steps, then check for the cancellation confirmation and next billing date.
If you subscribed through Apple, Google Play, a mobile carrier, or another partner, you may need to manage cancellation with that billing provider. If Premium still appears after cancellation, verify which account and payment provider are involved. Canceling Premium does not delete your Spotify account. A trial may become paid service unless canceled under the offer’s stated terms.

Spotify Support covers app updates, reinstalling, playback failures, Web Player issues, account recovery, and ongoing service problems at support.spotify.com. Reinstalling can clear local downloads, so first confirm account access and synchronization.
Privacy and account security
Private listening, playlist privacy, and profile publishing are related but separate controls. A private session can limit listening activity visibility; a playlist’s privacy or profile settings govern how that playlist is exposed or accessed. Review both if you use a shared device or do not want listening activity displayed.
For account safety, use a unique password, do not share credentials, review connected third-party apps, and sign out of devices you no longer control. If you suspect someone else has access, secure the account through Spotify’s official account and hacked-account guidance. Use official Spotify pages for login and billing; avoid unofficial downloaders or converters, which can create security and terms-of-use risks. Personal Spotify subscriptions should not be assumed to authorize music playback in a business or public venue; consult Spotify’s guidance for public or commercial use.
