If your Mac uses an Intel processor, Apple does not support full Spatial Audio and dynamic head tracking on that Mac. No setting change can add the feature. On an Apple-silicon Mac, the missing control usually indicates an outdated macOS version, unsupported AirPods, inactive audio output, unsupported content, or a pairing problem. Dolby Atmos playback in Apple Music is a separate feature and may still work on some Intel Macs.
Spatial Audio, head tracking, and Dolby Atmos are different
Spatial Audio is Apple’s immersive effect for supported music, movies, shows, games and some calls. Dynamic head tracking adds a fixed sound stage: when you turn your head, the sound remains positioned relative to the Mac. Dolby Atmos is an audio format used by compatible Apple Music tracks and video; it does not automatically provide head tracking. Personalized Spatial Audio is an optional profile created by scanning your face and ears with an iPhone’s TrueDepth camera.
Therefore, a Dolby Atmos badge can appear in Apple Music even when the AirPods Spatial Audio control is unavailable. Apple also warns that Spatial Audio is not offered for every app or item of content (Apple’s AirPods guide).
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute1. Check whether the Mac can support it
- Open Apple menu > About This Mac.
- Check whether the hardware is identified by Chip (Apple M1, M2, M3, M4 or later) or by Processor (Intel).
| Mac configuration | What it means |
|---|---|
| Apple silicon | Potentially supports Mac Spatial Audio and head tracking when other requirements are met. |
| Intel processor | Apple’s current Mac requirements exclude full Spatial Audio and dynamic head tracking. Updating macOS or buying new AirPods will not change that platform limitation. |
Spatial Audio and head tracking require macOS 12.3 or later on a compatible Mac (Apple requirement). Personalized Spatial Audio on Mac additionally requires Apple silicon and macOS Ventura or later, after the profile has been created on an iPhone (Apple’s Personalized Spatial Audio instructions).

Intel Macs can still play some Dolby Atmos audio
Apple Music Dolby Atmos playback is not identical to the AirPods head-tracking feature. On supported Intel configurations, Music may play Atmos when Dolby Atmos is set to Automatic or Always On. Availability depends on the Mac, output device, content and country or region (Apple Music Dolby Atmos requirements).
2. Confirm the AirPods or Beats model
Apple’s Mac Spatial Audio instructions identify AirPods 3, AirPods 4, AirPods Pro and AirPods Max as relevant supported families (AirPods guide). Apple’s Personalized Spatial Audio documentation also lists Beats Fit Pro, Beats Studio Pro, Beats Solo 4, Powerbeats Pro 2 and Powerbeats Fit (Apple support). A generic Bluetooth headset can play Mac sound, but Bluetooth compatibility alone does not create Apple’s Spatial Audio or head-tracking controls.
Model-specific pairing requirements differ. For example, Apple lists macOS Mojave 10.14.4 or later for AirPods 2, Catalina 10.15.1 or later for AirPods Pro 1, Monterey or later for AirPods 3, and the latest macOS for newer models. These are pairing requirements, not a guarantee that every Spatial Audio function works on every Mac (Apple’s Mac AirPods setup page).
3. Turn Spatial Audio on in macOS
- Put the supported AirPods on and connect them.
- Click the AirPods icon in the menu bar.
- Under Spatial Audio, choose Off, Fixed or Head Tracked.
Fixed supplies the spatial effect without following head movement. Head Tracked supplies both the effect and positional tracking. Apple may remember the choice separately for each supported app.

If the AirPods icon is missing
- Open System Settings.
- Select Menu Bar.
- Under Menu Bar Controls, enable Sound.
- Reconnect the AirPods and open the sound controls again.
The control can remain absent when the current app or media does not support Spatial Audio.
4. Make sure the AirPods are the active output
Being paired does not mean macOS is using the AirPods for playback. Open Control Center in the menu bar, choose Bluetooth or Sound, and select the AirPods. Start supported content, then check the AirPods controls again. Apple specifically recommends selecting the AirPods as the output when sound continues through the Mac’s speakers (Apple setup guidance).
5. Check the app and content
Spatial Audio is not system-wide. The app must support it, and the movie, show, song or game must contain compatible spatial content. Ordinary stereo content, an unsupported browser or an unsupported output path can leave the control unavailable. A Dolby Atmos label alone is not proof that dynamic head tracking is supported.

Apple Music settings
- Open Music.
- Choose Music > Settings (called Preferences on some older macOS versions).
- Select Playback.
- Set Dolby Atmos to Automatic, Always On or Off.
- Play a supported track and look for the Dolby icon in the playback controls.
Automatic enables Atmos for supported Apple or Beats Bluetooth headphones and compatible built-in speakers. Always On forces Atmos for headphones or speakers that do not trigger automatic detection; it does not turn unsupported hardware into head-tracking Spatial Audio. Apple Music and Atmos availability varies by region (Apple Music support; Music User Guide).

Built-in speaker limits
Apple lists Dolby Atmos playback through built-in speakers on certain models, including MacBook Pro (2018 or later), MacBook Air (2018 or later), the 2021 iMac and Apple Studio Display. This list concerns Apple Music Atmos playback, not AirPods head tracking.
6. Update macOS, then reconnect
- Open Apple menu > System Settings > General > Software Update.
- Install any compatible update and restart the Mac.
- Reconnect the AirPods and test known supported content.
Apple advises installing the latest available macOS before pairing AirPods, especially newer models (pairing guide). An update helps only when the Mac, headphones, app and content are otherwise compatible.
Forget and pair the AirPods again
- Open System Settings > Bluetooth.
- Find the AirPods, disconnect them or choose Forget.
- Put them into pairing mode and select them under nearby devices.
- Choose them as the sound output and test again.
For AirPods 1, 2, 3, AirPods Pro 1 and AirPods Pro 2, open the case and hold its setup button until the status light flashes white. AirPods 4 and AirPods Pro 3 use a double-tap sequence on the front of the case. AirPods Max enter pairing mode by holding the listening-mode button for about five seconds (Apple pairing instructions).

7. Reset the AirPods only after re-pairing fails
Resetting is appropriate when the AirPods repeatedly disconnect, expose no expected controls on compatible devices, or behave incorrectly across several Apple products. It is not a remedy for an Intel Mac.

Earlier AirPods and AirPods Pro cases
- Put the AirPods in their case, close the lid and wait 30 seconds.
- Forget them from a paired iPhone or iPad if listed there.
- Open the lid and hold the case setup button for about 15 seconds.
- Wait for the light to flash amber and then white.
- Pair the AirPods again.
AirPods 4 and AirPods Pro 3 use a different front-of-case double-tap reset sequence. Follow Apple’s model-specific instructions rather than applying the older button method (reset guidance).

The initial profile is created on an iPhone with iOS 16 or later and a TrueDepth camera:
- Connect the AirPods or Beats to the iPhone.
- Open Settings and tap the connected headphones.
- Select Personalized Spatial Audio > Personalize Spatial Audio.
- Follow the face and ear-scanning instructions.
The profile can then be used on a compatible Apple-silicon Mac running macOS Ventura or later when signed in with the same Apple Account. The Mac is not the normal capture device (Apple instructions). Personalized Spatial Audio is optional; basic Spatial Audio does not require a personalized profile.
9. Edge cases and alternatives
AirPods Max over USB-C
AirPods Max 1 with USB-C and AirPods Max 2 can use Spatial Audio and head tracking over USB-C when the Mac runs macOS 15.4 or later. Bluetooth must also be enabled. A cable does not remove the Apple-silicon requirement (Apple AirPods guide).

Wired headphones
Music’s Always On option may force Dolby Atmos playback through wired headphones, but ordinary wired headphones still do not gain dynamic head tracking.
HDMI home theater
On Apple-silicon Macs, Apple supports HDMI Dolby Atmos passthrough in Apple Music, QuickTime Player and the Apple TV app when using a built-in HDMI port or supported USB-C-to-HDMI adapter (Apple HDMI guidance). This is a home-theater output path, not AirPods Spatial Audio.
Automatic device switching
If the control disappears after switching devices, manually select the AirPods in Control Center. Automatic switching depends on supported software, the same Apple Account and two-factor authentication; manual selection is the clearer diagnostic step.

Test the AirPods with another compatible Apple-silicon Mac or iPhone. If Spatial Audio fails across compatible devices after updating, re-pairing and resetting, use Apple’s AirPods repair and service flow or the AirPods support hub. Do not treat missing Spatial Audio on an Intel Mac as a hardware defect: it is an advertised platform limitation.
