SpaceX launched Fram2 from Florida on March 31, 2025, carrying four civilians in a Crew Dragon on the first crewed flight into a near-polar orbit. The spacecraft passed over Earth’s polar regions, then returned safely to a Pacific splashdown off California on April 4 after nearly four days in space.
What Fram2 was—and what made it historic
Fram2 was a privately funded orbital mission operated by SpaceX for entrepreneur Chun Wang. Unlike Crew Dragon flights that ferry astronauts to the International Space Station, Fram2 followed a mission-specific orbit and did not rendezvous with the station. It was an international, all-civilian crew with no NASA astronaut aboard. The mission name refers to the Norwegian ship Fram, known for Arctic and Antarctic exploration. Fram2’s mission site describes its purpose and crew; NASA’s FY2025 activities report records the flight as a crewed polar-orbit mission.
The milestone needs a precise definition: Fram2 was the first crewed mission to fly in a polar orbit and pass over Earth’s polar regions. It was not the first spacecraft in a polar orbit; uncrewed satellites have used such orbits for decades. Nor did the crew land at either pole. “Around Earth’s poles” describes the route around the planet, not an expedition to the surface.
How a polar orbit works
An orbit inclined about 90 degrees to Earth’s equator carries a spacecraft north and south across the planet as it circles. Earth rotates beneath the orbit, so successive passes trace different paths over the globe. Fram2’s orbit was near-polar, not a promise that every pass crossed the exact geographic North and South Poles. The mission’s launch announcement described an approximately 90-degree orbit.

That trajectory is different from the commonly used eastward routes to the ISS. A crewed polar launch requires a carefully planned ground track, range coordination and safety planning so a launch or abort does not put people or populated areas at undue risk. Fram2 showed that a specialized orbit could be flown from Florida’s established crew-launch complex; it does not mean any Florida launch can simply be aimed over the poles.
Launch and mission timeline
| Event | Details |
|---|---|
| Launch | March 31, 2025, at 9:46:50 p.m. EDT (April 1 at 01:46:50 UTC), from Launch Complex 39A at Kennedy Space Center, Florida |
| Rocket and spacecraft | SpaceX Falcon 9 and Crew Dragon Resilience |
| Return | April 4, 2025, with a Pacific Ocean splashdown off California |
The local and UTC dates differ because the launch occurred late in the evening in Florida but after midnight UTC. Fram2’s official launch announcement gives the launch details; the Associated Press mission report covers the return.

Who flew on Fram2?
All four crew members were civilians and were making their first spaceflight. Their mission-specific titles reflected separate responsibilities aboard the spacecraft, rather than a government-agency astronaut assignment.
- Chun Wang, mission commander: Entrepreneur associated with f2pool and stakefish, and the mission’s private organizer.
- Jannicke Mikkelsen, vehicle commander: Norwegian filmmaker and cinematographer with experience in Arctic and remote environments.
- Rabea Rogge, vehicle pilot: German robotics researcher.
- Eric Philips, mission specialist and medical officer: Australian polar explorer.
The crew roster and roles are listed on the Fram2 mission site. Calling the crew “space tourists” misses the structured operational and research duties of the flight, though they were private participants rather than government-assigned astronauts.

Inside Crew Dragon Resilience
Fram2 flew in Crew Dragon Resilience, a reusable capsule previously used on other human-spaceflight missions. Specialist coverage identifies this vehicle as capsule C207-4. For Fram2, Dragon was fitted with a large domed observation window, often called a cupola, in place of the standard docking-port arrangement used for ISS missions. The window gave the crew broad views of the polar regions and supported Earth observation; it was a mission-specific modification to an existing Dragon, not an entirely new spacecraft design. NASASpaceFlight’s launch report describes the vehicle and configuration.
Research and observations during the flight
The mission announced 22 research projects intended to inform human health and performance in space. Planned work included an attempt at human X-ray imaging in space, exercise research related to muscle and skeletal health, growing mushrooms in microgravity, behavioral-health and human-performance studies, and testing crew function soon after landing. The crew also planned to observe aurora-like light emissions over polar regions, with the cupola supporting views of Earth. The research announcement outlines these planned activities.

Those announcements describe a research program, not a confirmed set of published findings. The available mission information establishes what the crew intended to study, but does not establish results for all 22 projects. In particular, the proposed first in-space human X-ray imaging should not be described as a completed achievement without a results report.

After nearly four days in orbit, Resilience performed its return sequence, reentered the atmosphere under parachutes and splashed down in the Pacific Ocean off California on April 4, 2025. Contemporary reporting identified the Pacific recovery as the first Pacific splashdown for a crewed Dragon mission. The location marked a distinct recovery profile from the Florida-area splashdowns associated with many crewed Dragon flights. The Associated Press report and Friends of NASA recovery coverage document the return.

Where Fram2 fits in private spaceflight
Fram2 added a specialized orbital objective to the private Crew Dragon flights that preceded it. Inspiration4 demonstrated an all-civilian orbital mission, while Polaris Dawn pursued more demanding private operations, including a commercial spacewalk. Fram2 centered on a near-polar orbit, Earth observation and human-performance research. Together, these missions show that commercial crew spacecraft can support objectives beyond transporting people to the ISS, though a bespoke mission still depends on extensive training, launch and range approvals, medical preparation and recovery planning. Fram2 demonstrated a capability; it does not by itself show that private human spaceflight is routine or broadly accessible.
