SpaceX launched Northrop Grumman’s Cygnus XL cargo spacecraft—not a SpaceX-built cargo ship—to the International Space Station on September 14, 2025. A Falcon 9 carried the first enlarged Cygnus XL from Cape Canaveral, delivering more than 11,000 pounds of research, food, supplies, replacement hardware, and station equipment.

The short version

The mission was Northrop Grumman’s Commercial Resupply Services-23 flight, commonly called NG-23 or CRS-23. SpaceX provided the launch vehicle: a Falcon 9 that lifted off from Space Launch Complex 40 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station at 6:11 p.m. EDT on September 14, 2025.

The spacecraft was Northrop Grumman’s first Cygnus XL, named the S.S. William “Willie” C. McCool after NASA astronaut William C. McCool. NASA said it carried more than 11,000 pounds of investigations, food, supplies, and equipment to the ISS.

After launch, Cygnus XL deployed its solar arrays and began a roughly two-day trip to the station. Its arrival was delayed by a day after propulsion software safeguards triggered during engine burns, but NASA later cleared the vehicle to approach. Astronauts captured it with the station’s Canadarm2 robotic arm and berthed it to the Unity module on September 18.

Estes 3226 Hi-Flier XL Intermediate Model-Rocket Kit
  • Can soar upward of 1,300 feet

NASA’s launch report provides the mission’s basic timeline and vehicle identifications.

This was not a SpaceX cargo spacecraft

The headline needs one important qualification:

  • SpaceX: supplied the Falcon 9 launch service.
  • Northrop Grumman: built and operated the Cygnus XL cargo spacecraft.
  • NASA: contracted the resupply mission for the International Space Station.

That division is similar to hiring a trucking company to transport a container built and loaded by another company. SpaceX supplied the ride to orbit; Northrop Grumman supplied the vehicle that carried the cargo to the station.

Why Cygnus XL was significant

Cygnus XL was an enlarged version of Northrop Grumman’s established Cygnus resupply vehicle. According to the company’s NG-23 mission overview, the larger configuration increased cargo capacity by 33 percent.

Its published specifications included:

  • Up to 5,000 kilograms, or about 11,000 pounds, of ascent cargo.
  • Approximately 38 cubic meters of pressurized cargo volume.
  • Two fixed-wing UltraFlex solar arrays using ZTJ gallium-arsenide solar cells.
  • The ability to remain berthed to the station and perform routine reboost services.
  • Controlled destructive reentry at the end of its mission.

The 11,000-pound figure should not be confused with the total mass of the spacecraft, its propellant, or its launch hardware. It refers to the cargo capacity or delivered cargo, depending on the context. Nor was every pound a scientific experiment: NASA’s description includes food, crew provisions, station spares, gases, operational equipment, and research investigations.

What was inside Cygnus XL?

Station maintenance and life-support hardware

A large and important part of the shipment consisted of replacement components. NASA’s CRS-23 hardware inventory identifies equipment supporting the station’s air, water, power, lighting, exercise, and visiting-vehicle systems.

The publicly identified hardware included:

  • An IDA Planar Reflector, which helps visiting spacecraft calculate relative range, velocity, and attitude during approach.
  • A spare Urine Processing Assembly Distillation Assembly, part of the system that recovers potable water from wastewater.
  • Reactor Health Sensors for the station’s Water Processing Assembly.
  • A Pressure Management Device used to pressurize and depressurize vestibules.
  • Air Selector Valves for the Carbon Dioxide Removal Assembly.
  • Components for the Major Constituent Analyzer, which monitors gases such as oxygen, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, methane, hydrogen, and water vapor.
  • A Charcoal Bed for removing trace contaminants from cabin air.
  • A Common Cabin Air Assembly Heat Exchanger for temperature, humidity, and airflow control.
  • A Sequential Shunt Unit for regulating solar-array voltage.
  • Solid-State Lighting Assemblies and remote power-control modules.
  • Treadmill Isolator Assemblies that reduce vibration and force transfer.
  • A pump fan motor controller, emergency quick-don mask assemblies, and anomaly gas analyzers.
  • Nitrogen and oxygen resupply hardware.
  • A lighting unit used for crew and equipment translation during spacewalks.

These are not glamorous payloads, but they are essential. The station depends on a constant supply of spares because failures in water recovery, air purification, power regulation, or environmental monitoring cannot be solved by simply ordering a replacement from Earth after the problem occurs.

Research payloads

Mission coverage also identified several science and technology investigations. These should be treated as reported payload highlights rather than as a complete NASA inventory of every experiment aboard.

Similarly, the cryogenic investigation concerns the long-duration storage and management of extremely cold fluids. It does not mean the station received a ready-to-use deep-space fuel depot.

How Cygnus XL reached the station

  1. Launch: A SpaceX Falcon 9 lifted off from SLC-40 on September 14, 2025.
  2. Deployment: Cygnus XL separated from the rocket’s upper stage and deployed its solar arrays.
  3. Transit: The spacecraft began its approach to the ISS, a trip planned to take roughly two days.
  4. Rendezvous: NASA flight controllers coordinated the approach while the spacecraft used its propulsion system to adjust its orbit.
  5. Capture: Astronauts used Canadarm2 to capture the spacecraft.
  6. Berthing: Ground controllers moved Cygnus XL to the Earth-facing port of the station’s Unity module.

This was a capture-and-berthing operation, not simply an autonomous docking. Canadarm2 physically grappled the spacecraft, after which controllers guided it into position and attached it to the station.

Why the arrival was delayed

The original plan called for capture on September 17. NASA later reported that the arrival shifted by one day while flight controllers assessed an alternate approach after the spacecraft’s main engine shut down early during two burns.

NASA said a conservative software safeguard triggered the shutdowns. That did not automatically mean the spacecraft was lost. Teams evaluated the vehicle’s condition, developed a revised approach plan, and cleared Cygnus XL to continue toward the station. NASA reported its installation on Unity on September 18.

The episode illustrates why launch success and mission success are separate milestones. Reaching orbit is only the first stage; a cargo mission also has to deploy its spacecraft, navigate to the station, complete rendezvous operations, and safely transfer its cargo.

NASA’s approach update describes the propulsion-related delay and the revised rendezvous plan.

What happens after unloading?

Cygnus is primarily an upmass vehicle. Unlike SpaceX’s Dragon cargo spacecraft, it is not designed to return intact with a payload of experiments or equipment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

While berthed, Cygnus can also support station operations by performing reboost services. After its cargo mission is complete, it departs the station and performs a controlled destructive reentry, burning up in Earth’s atmosphere along with approved waste and disposal cargo. The available mission sources establish that planned end-of-life sequence but do not establish a verified NG-23 reentry date.

Why the larger cargo ship matters

The Cygnus XL’s 33 percent capacity increase gives NASA and its commercial partners more room for station spares, crew supplies, gases, and research hardware on a single mission. It may also make it easier to fly larger or more complex investigations without splitting them across as many logistics flights.

That does not, by itself, prove a specific cost saving or guarantee a particular scientific breakthrough. Its immediate value is logistical: more pressurized cargo volume and greater payload capacity for a station that needs regular deliveries to remain operational.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The longer-term implication is that larger and more capable cargo vehicles could become useful for future commercial stations and, potentially, lunar or deep-space logistics. Those are future applications, not results demonstrated by NG-23 itself.
