Soorarai Pottru is a stirring, romance-led drama about making air travel accessible to ordinary people. Suriya and Aparna Balamurali give its ambition an appealing emotional centre, and director Sudha Kongara delivers vivid, rousing set pieces. The trade-off is a 149-minute film that leans on melodrama and simplifies the business behind its big dream. It works best as an inspirational story about partnership and access—not as a realistic airline-startup drama.
What is Soorarai Pottru about?
Released in 2020, the Tamil-language film follows Nedumaaran “Maara” Rajangam (Suriya), the son of a teacher who dreams of launching an airline that ordinary Indians can afford. Established commercial interests, officials and the practical difficulty of building an airline stand in his way. Friends, family and his community become part of the effort, keeping the story from being only about a lone hero willing his plan into existence.
The aviation goal gives the drama its stakes, but the larger idea is access: who gets to travel, aspire and claim a place in spaces traditionally associated with wealth. The film uses that idea to connect Maara’s business ambition to questions of class, dignity and social mobility. This review avoids the ending.

The romance is more than a subplot
Maara’s relationship with Sundari, played by Aparna Balamurali, is the film’s emotional engine. Their chemistry brings warmth and comedy to a story otherwise driven by setbacks and public battles. A conspicuous proposal and Maara’s awkward appeal for financial help show the couple’s lively, imperfect dynamic without turning their romance into a pause in the “real” plot.

More importantly, Sundari is not simply there to cheer Maara on. She is independent and self-possessed, and her practical and emotional contributions make her a partner in the dream. That gives the relationship more weight than a standard inspirational-film love interest. The screenplay could give her more interiority of her own, but the film is strongest when their ambitions and decisions meet as equals.
Suriya leads with conviction
Suriya makes Maara impulsive, stubborn and purposeful, moving between anger, humiliation, romantic vulnerability and public determination. His physical commitment and star presence give the character an immediate, rousing force. At times that force makes Maara feel almost too heroic; the film is more interested in the feeling of refusing to give up than in the ordinary limits that would complicate such a figure. Still, Suriya gives the ambition enough earthy energy to keep it engaging.

Balamurali is a major strength alongside him. Paresh Rawal plays Paresh Goswami, a formidable airline rival, while Mohan Babu, Urvashi, Karunas and the wider ensemble help build the family and community around Maara. The opposition can feel broadly drawn, with rivals and institutions often functioning more as obstacles than as fully explored points of view. The collective support, however, gives the project a social dimension that a pure “lone genius” story would lack.
A rousing film, not a business case study
Director Sudha Kongara interweaves romance, family, community and business conflict, building momentum through successive reversals and big emotional scenes. The goal is easy to grasp, and the prospect of affordable air travel makes an effective symbol of breaking class barriers. The film’s most persuasive argument is emotional: people shut out of opportunity deserve a chance to reach beyond the limits placed on them.

Its account of entrepreneurship is less persuasive as literal business drama. Launching an airline involves complex financial, operational and regulatory realities; the film simplifies those mechanics in favour of momentum and emotional payoff. Corporate rivalry and bureaucratic obstruction sometimes arrive in broad, melodramatic strokes. Soorarai Pottru is more convincing as a fable about ambition, access and shared effort than as a detailed portrait of how an airline is built.
Music, visuals and pacing
Niketh Bomireddy’s cinematography gives the film a warm brown-and-gold palette, grounding its rural settings while making the dream of flight feel expansive. G. V. Prakash Kumar’s energetic music helps carry the emotional surges and keeps the film moving toward its larger set pieces. The contrast between everyday surroundings and aspirational scale suits a story about people imagining access to a world beyond their reach.

The official Prime Video listing gives the runtime as 2 hours 29 minutes; the film’s 149 minutes leave room for its romance, family story, setbacks and public conflicts, but not every stretch sustains the same urgency. Viewers who enjoy expansive, emotionally heightened dramas may find the scale satisfying. Those expecting a taut aviation thriller or a compact business story may find it overextended, with some emotional escalation tipping into melodrama.
Is Soorarai Pottru a true story?
The film is loosely inspired by G. R. Gopinath’s aviation career and his memoir Simply Fly, which is associated with the story of low-cost airline Air Deccan. It is not a literal biography: Maara is a fictionalised character, and the film reshapes personal circumstances and other details. Treat the real-world connection as inspiration, not a claim that the screen story documents Gopinath’s life or reproduces Air Deccan’s history.

Soorarai Pottru has an official Prime Video listing. It is a Tamil-language film, and the listing shows subtitle options including English; a Telugu-language version, Aakaasam Nee Haddhu Ra, is also listed. Catalogue access, subscription or rental terms, audio and subtitles can vary by country and change, so check the local Prime Video page or app before subscribing. The verified runtime is 2 hours 29 minutes.
Who should watch it?
Choose it if you want a moving, high-energy drama about ambition, community and a romance that meaningfully shapes the hero’s journey. Suriya and Balamurali’s performances, the film’s visual warmth and its uplifting momentum outweigh its uneven pacing for viewers open to heightened storytelling.
Approach it with different expectations if you want a rigorously factual Gopinath biography, a close look at airline economics, understated conflict or a shorter film. Its emotional truth is stronger than its business realism. For viewers willing to take the dream on those terms, Soorarai Pottru earns its lift.
