The Sony WF-1000XM5 is the better earbud overall: it is smaller, has stronger measured noise reduction, adds direct volume controls and head tracking, and uses newer Bluetooth hardware. But it is not an automatic upgrade for every XM4 owner—or a comfort win for every ear. The WF-1000XM4 can still make sense at a substantial discount if it fits you better and its battery is healthy. If you are buying new in 2026, also compare the XM5’s price with Sony’s newer WF-1000XM6 before deciding.
Sony WF-1000XM5 vs. WF-1000XM4: key differences
The XM5 is the newer generation, released in 2023; the XM4 dates to 2021. Both are premium true-wireless earbuds with active noise cancellation (ANC), wireless charging, LDAC, EQ, ambient sound mode and multipoint. The XM5’s upgrades are most noticeable in its smaller design, noise reduction, controls and newer connectivity—not in Sony’s headline music-battery rating.

Design and comfort: smaller helps, but seal matters more
The XM5 earbuds are smaller, and SoundGuys measured its charging case at about 38g compared with roughly 41.1g for the XM4 case. The XM5 also includes an XS tip option; the XM4 starts at S. Those changes make the XM5 the more promising first try for people who found the XM4 bulky or could not get a comfortable fit with its supplied tips.

That is not a universal comfort verdict. Some people with larger ears may find the XM4’s shape more secure, while others may prefer the XM5. An earbud that is smaller but does not seal properly can feel loose and let in more sound. Judge each model by pressure, stability and seal—not dimensions alone—and wear it for a while before deciding whether it will work for longer sessions.
Both use foam-style tips that can help create an isolating seal, but foam may feel less comfortable to some people and can wear differently from silicone. Try every supplied size and use Sony’s in-app ear-tip fit test. A good seal helps passive isolation and the perceived effectiveness of ANC; a bad seal can undermine both. If you plan to exercise, either model can handle light sweat or splashes, but neither has the stabilizing wings or hooks some runners need. IPX4 is not protection for swimming or showering, and keep the case dry.
Noise cancellation: XM5 leads in testing, with a fit caveat
Independent measurements by SoundGuys found stronger overall attenuation from the XM5, including about 32dB of sub-bass reduction compared with about 28dB for the XM4. The XM5 also showed a more consistent effect in the 100–300Hz range. That advantage is most useful against steady low-frequency sounds such as aircraft and bus engines, train rumble, HVAC and some city noise.

The XM5 also measured better isolation in the 1–3kHz region, which SoundGuys partly attributed to its redesigned tips, but an individual listener’s seal can change the result. A well-fitting XM4 may isolate better for you than a poorly fitting XM5. Neither pair makes every sound disappear, and wind or nearby conversation can still be audible.
Both earbuds offer Ambient Sound mode and Quick Attention, which let you hear more of your surroundings without removing them. Sony’s app provides settings for these modes. If your priority is the strongest possible ANC rather than Sony specifically, compare current alternatives too: Tom’s Guide’s current roundup places Bose’s QuietComfort Ultra ahead of the XM5 for ANC. That is a reviewer’s comparative judgment, not a guarantee for every ear or listening situation.
Sound quality: XM5 is clearer; XM4 is warmer
SoundGuys found broadly similar overall frequency responses, but reported more perceived vocal and instrumental clarity from the XM5, particularly in higher frequencies. The XM4’s default presentation is warmer and more bass-forward, which some listeners may prefer; the XM5 comes across as cleaner and more articulate. These are tendencies, not fixed rules about which sounds better for every genre or listener. Both have Sony’s EQ in the app, so you can tailor the balance.

If the bass is too prominent, reducing the app’s Clear Bass setting by a couple of notches is one possible starting point, not a universal setting. The XM5’s 8.4mm driver is larger than the XM4’s 6mm driver, but driver diameter by itself does not establish sound quality.
Both support LDAC, so that codec is not an upgrade reason on its own. LDAC is most relevant with a compatible Android device and software; iPhones do not output LDAC. The audible difference depends on the recording, source, settings and listening conditions. LDAC can also use more power or make a connection less stable in some circumstances. For many listeners, fit, tuning and ANC will matter more than the codec label.
Calls and microphones: the newer system favors XM5
The XM5 has a newer microphone and voice-processing system; SoundGuys describes three microphones per earbud and AI-based voice processing. That makes it the stronger candidate if calls are a priority. However, SoundGuys noted that its comparison’s original microphone section used pre-production XM5 units, so it should not be treated as a definitive standardized test of retail earbuds on current firmware.
As with most earbuds, expect call results to vary with fit, background traffic, wind, the connected device and the meeting or phone app. The XM5’s newer hardware is a sensible advantage to weigh, not a promise that it will make every outdoor call clear.
Battery life: tied on paper, different in practice
Sony rates both models for up to eight hours of music with ANC on and up to 12 hours with ANC off. For continuous communication with ANC on, Sony lists up to six hours for the XM5 and 5.5 hours for the XM4. These are rated figures, not a guarantee of runtime in every setting. Sony’s specifications are published for the XM5 and XM4.

In its own standardized ANC-on test, SoundGuys recorded about 9 hours 32 minutes for the XM5 and 7 hours 43 minutes for the XM4. Treat those as results under that outlet’s test conditions, not as a replacement for Sony’s ratings or a promise about your listening time. The case provides roughly 16 additional hours of ANC listening according to SoundGuys. Both cases support wireless charging. Sony says a roughly three-minute case charge can give the XM5 about an hour of playback; actual quick-charge results depend on conditions. See Sony’s XM5 product page for its charging information.

The XM5 does not improve the official music-battery rating. Its practical appeal is its newer hardware and better result in the cited independent test. More importantly for a 2026 buyer, an XM4 has had more time to accumulate battery wear: Sony notes that rechargeable battery capacity decreases with use and over time. That does not mean every XM4 has a battery problem. It does mean that a used or old-stock unit deserves more scrutiny than a new XM5.
Before buying a used or refurbished XM4, ask about real single-charge runtime, check whether the left and right earbuds drain evenly, and verify that the case charges them and that wireless charging works if you need it. Confirm what is included, whether the unit is genuine, how long the return period lasts and what warranty or repair coverage applies. Do not assume that a low asking price makes up for unknown battery condition.
Controls, app and device compatibility
The XM5’s clearest day-to-day control improvement is direct volume adjustment: four taps on the left earbud lower volume and four on the right raise it. The XM4 lacks that same native layout. Both models have customizable touch controls, wear detection, playback controls, voice-assistant access, ANC and ambient controls, and Sony app settings.
Sony has shifted the app branding from Headphones Connect to Sony | Sound Connect. Existing XM4 owners may still recognize the older name; use Sony’s current app listing for EQ, ANC and ambient settings, control mapping and firmware updates. Both generations offer features such as EQ, Adaptive Sound Control, Quick Attention, DSEE Extreme, 360 Reality Audio setup and an ear-tip fit test. The XM5 alone adds head tracking for compatible spatial-audio content.
Both work with Android and iPhone over Bluetooth, but feature support is not identical across every phone, computer and operating-system version. LDAC is mainly useful with compatible Android sources; LC3/LE Audio on the XM5 requires compatible source hardware and software. Both earbuds support multipoint, which connects to two devices, but the XM4 needs current firmware for it. Multipoint behavior and codec options can vary with the connected devices. Check Sony’s XM5 support page or XM4 support page for current firmware information rather than relying on a version number that may change.

Choose the WF-1000XM5 if…
- You want Sony’s stronger measured ANC and newer processing.
- You have smaller ears, or the XM4 felt too bulky; try the XS tip and check the seal.
- You want onboard volume controls, head tracking or Bluetooth 5.3 and LC3 support.
- You are buying new and the XM5 costs only modestly more than an XM4 in comparable condition.
- You would rather avoid the greater battery-age uncertainty of an older XM4.
Consider the WF-1000XM4 if…
- It is substantially cheaper and comes with a clear return policy and credible warranty or condition information.
- You prefer its larger shape or warmer default sound.
- You already own one with a comfortable, reliable fit and healthy batteries.
- You do not need head tracking, LC3 or direct volume taps.
There is no universal discount percentage that makes an XM4 the better buy: condition, warranty, seller and return rights all change the calculation. A used XM4 with uncertain battery life should be cheaper by more than a clean, warrantied unit, and neither should be compared with the price of a new XM5 as if condition were equal.

Is it worth upgrading from XM4 to XM5?
Keep your XM4 if it fits comfortably, seals well, holds enough charge for your day and you mainly listen to music. The XM5’s upgrades are real, but they do not transform the core experience enough to make replacement necessary for every owner. Both support LDAC, EQ, ANC, ambient sound, wireless charging and multipoint when the XM4 firmware is current.

This is a stronger case when replacing an aging pair than when replacing an XM4 that is still working well. Battery wear is a reason to compare, not evidence that every XM4 needs replacement.
For new buyers, there is another price check: the WF-1000XM6 is Sony’s newer flagship generation. TechRadar lists it as a February 12, 2026 release. Check the current XM5 and XM6 prices in your region; Sony’s XM5 page lists a $329.99 MSRP and says promotions and prices can change, so that figure is not a reliable current sale price. Do not assume the XM6’s price or performance advantage without checking current listings and comparisons. If you use an iPhone and value close Apple-device integration more than LDAC or Sony-specific settings, also compare AirPods Pro; Android users or people invested in Sony’s EQ and sound features may weigh the trade-offs differently. Check current comparative testing rather than assuming one model is best for every platform.
Verdict
The WF-1000XM5 wins this comparison for most people buying new: it delivers stronger measured noise reduction, a smaller design, more convenient controls and newer connectivity. The WF-1000XM4 remains a reasonable value only when its price reflects its age and its fit, battery condition and seller protections check out. If you already have a healthy XM4, keep it unless one of the XM5’s specific improvements solves a problem you actually have. And if the XM5 is near full price, compare it with Sony’s newer XM6 before buying.
