Verdict: The Sony ULT Wear (WH-ULT900N) is a compelling buy for bass fans when discounted, but it is not the best all-rounder at its $249.99 U.S. list price. Its ULT button delivers an unusually forceful low end, and Sony claims up to 30 hours of listening with noise canceling on. The trade-offs are less-neutral sound, no proven claim of class-leading noise cancellation or call quality, and a rotating-shaft issue Sony covers for eligible units under a regional service notice. At the $148 Forest Gray price observed on Sony’s U.S. store in August 2026, it is much easier to recommend—provided you check the service information and can return it if the fit or sound is not right.

These are manufacturer specifications and claims, not guarantees for every listening setup. The list price and the $148 sale observation refer to the U.S. market; Sony’s prices, service coverage and package contents can differ by country. Sony’s U.S. product page lists the product and its headline features.
Sound: the ULT button is the point
The ULT Wear is built around bass, not a neutral studio-style presentation. With ULT disabled, you get the headphone’s standard tuning. The physical ULT button adds two more bass-forward modes: ULT1 for a bass lift and ULT2 for a more extreme effect. They are options, not automatic improvements. Whether they sound better depends on your music and how much low-end weight you enjoy.
Hip-hop, dance, EDM, pop, reggae and bass-heavy soundtracks are natural matches. On vocals, acoustic recordings or music with busy guitars and keyboards, added bass can draw attention away from the midrange, especially in the stronger mode. If you like the ULT effect but find it too heavy, use the EQ in Sony Sound Connect to experiment with less bass and more midrange. EQ can tailor the presentation; it cannot guarantee a preferred result for every listener, fit or recording.

Try the same familiar tracks with ULT off, ULT1 and ULT2 before deciding. Listen for whether kick drums gain satisfying impact or become boomy, and whether singers remain clear. That short comparison is more informative than assuming the most bass is always best.
Noise canceling, transparency and travel
Sony specifies dual noise sensors and its V1 processor for noise reduction, plus an Ambient Sound mode. The ULT Wear is therefore equipped for commuting and travel, but the available evidence does not establish it as class-leading against Bose or Sony’s premium 1000X models. Bass performance and noise cancellation are separate questions: a headphone can make music exciting without being the strongest at reducing voices or revealing outside sound naturally.
For your own use, check low steady noise such as HVAC or a bus rumble separately from office conversation, announcements and wind. ANC generally has a different job from transparency: one reduces outside sound, while Ambient Sound lets more of it through. Test both without music and with music at a safe volume, especially if you need to hear people or announcements. Fit and the seal around your ears can also affect what you hear.

Comfort and everyday use
Sony describes the ear cushions as thermo-foaming. That does not make comfort universal: clamp, ear-cup depth, heat, headband pressure and glasses all depend on the wearer. If possible, try them on and wear them long enough to notice pressure or warmth, rather than judging from a brief fitting. People with larger ears, glasses or a warm commute should pay particular attention to cup depth and heat buildup.
The folding design and included accessories can depend on the package and region; check the U.S. retail listing for the exact contents rather than assuming every market includes the same case or cable. For daily use, also make sure the ULT button and other physical controls are easy for you to locate and operate. Sony’s support page for the WH-ULT900N is the place to confirm model-specific support information.
Battery, charging and wireless features
Sony claims up to 30 hours with noise canceling enabled and up to 50 hours with it disabled. Those are maximum manufacturer figures, not a promise of the same result with every codec, volume, call schedule or feature combination. RTINGS reported a 44-hour ANC-on result under its own test method, which illustrates why a lab measurement and a manufacturer maximum should not be presented as though they were directly interchangeable. Sony also claims about 1.5 hours of playback from a three-minute charge. Actual runtime varies with usage. The headphones support SBC and AAC as well as LDAC. LDAC needs a compatible source device—most relevant to some Android users—and its theoretical bandwidth does not mean every listener will hear an improvement with every track or connection.

In practice, choose LDAC when compatible high-bandwidth wireless playback matters more, or multipoint when convenient switching matters more.

Sony Sound Connect is used for sound and settings customization. Sony’s downloads page listed firmware version 2.1.0, released December 9, 2025, when the dossier was checked; availability can change. Check Sony’s WH-ULT900N downloads page for the current firmware and instructions. App labels and controls can change with updates, so consult the current app rather than relying on old menu directions.

The headphones support hands-free calling, but that specification does not prove how well your voice will come through in traffic, wind or a busy office. The available evidence does not establish a definitive call-quality ranking. If calls are central to your purchase, test them on the phone and computer you actually use, in a quiet room and with representative background noise. Pay attention to voice consistency, keyboard pickup and how the headphones switch between a call and music.
Durability: check Sony’s rotating-shaft service notice
This is the key caveat to investigate before buying. Sony has acknowledged that cracks may occur in the rotating shaft joining the headband and earcup housing for specified units. The Sony Asia service notice sets out eligibility and says qualifying affected units can receive free repair through January 31, 2027. Sony’s U.S. support page also lists a service program, but the Asia notice’s terms and deadline should not be assumed to apply identically in every country.

The notice does not say every ULT Wear will break or establish a universal failure rate. Eligibility depends on region and specified model or serial details, and the cited material does not establish that every later unit has a redesigned hinge. Before purchase—or immediately after, if you already bought one—check the official Sony notice for your region and unit. Keep the receipt, buy from a seller with a clear return policy, and inspect the joints without forcing or twisting them. For a used or refurbished pair, check the serial information, hinge condition, battery behavior and return coverage.
How it compares
- Sony WH-1000XM5 or a newer premium Sony model: Compare these if you prioritize travel-focused noise canceling and a more refined all-round presentation over the ULT Wear’s bass emphasis. A discounted premium model can change the value calculation, so compare actual prices and your priorities rather than assuming the ULT is cheaper in practice.
- Sony WH-CH720N: A lower-positioned Sony option to consider if lighter weight and price matter more than the ULT Wear’s bass feature set. Compare the current specifications and prices; don’t assume every feature is shared.
- Bose QuietComfort: A logical alternative to audition if comfort and noise canceling are your main reasons for buying. Choose by fit and use case, not by brand alone.
- JBL Live models: Worth comparing for mainstream, bass-friendly sound. Check the specific model’s current codec support, ANC, battery, app and price; these vary by model.
- Anker Soundcore Space series: A value-oriented comparison if price and features are central. Compare the exact model and its current capabilities against Sony’s app ecosystem and ULT controls.
These are use-case comparisons, not claims that one model wins every test. Prices and model lineups change, and comfort, tuning and ANC are personal.
Is the Sony ULT Wear worth buying?
At the $249.99 U.S. MSRP, buy it only if you specifically want the ULT bass presentation and its combination of features. At the $148 Forest Gray price observed on Sony’s U.S. store in August 2026, it is a much stronger value for bass fans, assuming the fit works and you have checked regional service eligibility. Between roughly $150 and $200, compare current Bose, JBL, Soundcore and discounted Sony alternatives. Near $250, weigh ANC, calls, fit and hinge concerns carefully rather than paying for bass alone.
Buy it for: forceful low end, Sony’s EQ/app options, long claimed battery life, LDAC on a compatible device, or two-device multipoint when used without LDAC.
