A Sonos soundbar that is silent, missing from the app, or failing to control TV volume is not necessarily defective. In many cases, the cause is the wrong TV port, an incorrect audio-output setting, an HDMI-CEC handshake problem, an unsupported audio format, or an optical-remote limitation.
Use the symptom that matches your problem below. Start with power, setup, cables, and basic audio settings before considering a factory reset.

Start with the symptom
| What is happening? | Start here |
|---|---|
| No light or no response | Check power and the outlet |
| The Sonos app cannot find the soundbar | Check setup and network discovery |
| The app sees it, but TV audio is silent | Check HDMI ARC/eARC or optical connections |
| Music works but TV audio does not | Check the TV output and audio format |
| Audio cuts out or skips | Isolate cables, formats, and HDMI devices |
| The remote changes TV volume but not Sonos volume | Check CEC or infrared remote setup |
| Only a console, Blu-ray player, app, DTS, or Atmos content fails | Troubleshoot the source and format |
1. Check whether the soundbar is powered
- Firmly reseat the power cable at the soundbar and the wall outlet.
- Test the outlet with another working device.
- Temporarily bypass a power strip, smart plug, or surge protector.
- Check the product LED and try the soundbar’s controls or the Sonos app.
A dark front LED does not always mean the soundbar is dead; LED behavior and brightness can be configured differently. However, if the product remains completely unresponsive with a known-good outlet and cable, stop changing TV settings and contact Sonos Support or arrange service.

2. Confirm that it is set up in the Sonos app
A Beam, Arc, Ray, and other Sonos home-theater products must be set up in the Sonos app before they can play TV audio. Open the current Sonos app and confirm that your phone or tablet is connected to the same intended home network as the Sonos system.
#1 Best Overall
- Enrich your entertainment experience with vibrant bass, crystal clear dialogue, and a panoramic soundstage.
- Experience a 3D surround sound effect with Dolby Atmos.
- Stream music, radio, podcasts, and audiobooks from all your favorite services when the TV is off.
- Control with the Sonos app, your TV remote, Apple AirPlay 2, and your voice.
- Effortless setup with only two cables and smart Trueplay tuning.
- Open the Sonos app and check whether the soundbar appears in the system.
- If it is missing, use Settings → Add Speaker or Component, or the equivalent option shown in your app version.
- Keep the phone close to the soundbar during discovery.
- Temporarily disable a VPN or network-isolation feature if it prevents discovery.
- Make sure the phone is not connected to a guest Wi-Fi network while the soundbar is on the main network.
- If supported by your model and setup, connect the soundbar by Ethernet temporarily and try adding it again.
Menu names can differ between the current Sonos app, operating systems, and the S1 Controller. Use Sonos’s model-specific setup instructions for the Beam, Arc, or Ray.
3. Check the correct TV connection
The connection type is the most important branch in this troubleshooting process.
Arc, Arc Ultra, and Beam: HDMI ARC or eARC
- Connect the HDMI cable to the TV port labelled HDMI ARC or HDMI eARC.
- Connect the other end to the soundbar’s HDMI port.
- Do not use an ordinary HDMI input unless the TV manual explicitly identifies it as ARC/eARC.
- Turn on the TV and play content while testing.
- Enable HDMI-CEC in the TV settings.
CEC may have a different brand name, such as Anynet+, Simplink, Bravia Sync, Viera Link, or EasyLink. The relevant TV menus usually include labels such as Sound Output, External Speaker, Receiver, HDMI ARC/eARC, and CEC. If the Sonos app reports that HDMI ARC is not detected, follow Sonos’s HDMI ARC troubleshooting.
Ray, Playbar, and Playbase: digital optical
- Connect the optical cable to the TV’s Digital Optical Out port.
- Remove protective dust caps from the cable ends.
- Push both connectors fully into place without forcing them.
- Set the TV’s audio output to optical, external audio, or a similarly named option.
- With the TV powered on, check for a red optical light at the loose end of the cable.
Ray, Playbar, and Playbase require an optical TV output. Arc, Arc Ultra, and Beam can use an optical adapter when the TV lacks ARC, but optical removes HDMI-CEC-based TV control and TV voice-control benefits. Sonos provides additional no-sound troubleshooting.

4. Make sure the TV is sending audio to Sonos
Connecting a cable does not automatically make the TV route sound through the soundbar. Look in the TV’s sound menus for settings named Sound Output, Audio Output, Speakers, Receiver, External Speaker, Digital Audio Output, Passthrough, or CEC.
As a controlled test, disconnect or disable the Sonos connection and play the same content through the TV’s built-in speakers:
- If the TV speakers are also silent or drop out, troubleshoot the TV or source device first.
- If the TV speakers work but Sonos is silent, focus on the cable, ARC/eARC handshake, CEC, optical output, Sonos setup, or audio format.
This is a diagnostic inference rather than a guaranteed diagnosis, but it quickly separates a TV/source problem from the TV-to-Sonos path.
5. Restart the system before changing advanced settings
Reboot the TV, the external source device, and the soundbar before factory-resetting anything.
Rank #3
- Experience clearer, more powerful sound than ever before possible by a small standalone soundbar.
- Dynamic sound that enhances the drama and creates a surprisingly wide soundstage.
- Zero-stress setup with only two cables and help from the Sonos app.
- Stream all your content from your favorite services over WiFi using the Sonos app, Apple AirPlay 2, Spotify Connect, and more.
- Turn off the TV and connected devices.
- Unplug the TV and source devices for about 10 seconds.
- Reconnect power, turn on the TV, and play content.
- Test again with only the soundbar connected to the TV.
ARC/eARC uses HDMI-CEC communication for device detection, power behavior, and volume commands. A restart can restore a failed handshake without erasing the Sonos system.
6. Isolate HDMI-CEC interference
Receivers, cable boxes, game consoles, Blu-ray players, and other HDMI products can interfere with CEC. If the Sonos app displays an HDMI or CEC error:
- Disconnect every other HDMI device from the TV.
- Leave only the Sonos soundbar connected to the ARC/eARC port.
- Restart the TV and test audio.
- Reconnect consoles, cable boxes, receivers, and players one at a time.
- When the problem returns, disable that device’s CEC feature if possible and investigate it separately.
Sonos describes this isolation method in its guide to HDMI errors in the Sonos app.
7. Test the audio format
A soundbar may work normally with music and some TV programs while remaining silent with one app, console, or disc. The source may be sending a format that the TV-to-Sonos path or the particular Sonos product does not support.
Rank #4
- Enrich your entertainment experience with vibrant bass, crystal clear dialogue, and a panoramic soundstage.
- Experience a 3D surround sound effect with Dolby Atmos.
- Stream music, radio, podcasts, and audiobooks from all your favorite services when the TV is off.
- Control with the Sonos app, your TV remote, Apple AirPlay 2, and your voice.
- Effortless setup with only two cables and smart Trueplay tuning.
For diagnosis, set the TV or source device to PCM or Stereo. If that restores audio, try Dolby Digital next, then re-enable higher-quality formats one at a time.
- PCM/Stereo: The simplest compatibility test, but it may reduce surround capability.
- Dolby Digital: A useful next test for surround sound.
- Dolby Digital Plus: Supported for this use by models including Arc, Arc SL, and Arc Ultra, but the complete source path must also support it.
- DTS: Compatibility depends on the Sonos product and software ecosystem. Sonos states that DTS is not supported by Sonos S1 systems, while compatible products on the latest Sonos app may support DTS Digital Surround.
- Dolby Atmos: Requires compatible content, source hardware, TV pass-through, soundbar, and connection. Arc, Arc Ultra, and Beam Gen 2 require HDMI ARC/eARC for Atmos; Ray and Playbar should not be treated as Atmos soundbars.
Some consoles and Blu-ray players can transcode DTS to Dolby Digital 5.1. Consult the source device’s audio settings and Sonos’s TV and format requirements rather than assuming that enabling Atmos or Dolby Digital Plus will fix every silent source.
8. Fix audio that cuts out, skips, or stops
Follow this order:
- Reboot the TV and the external audio source.
- Inspect the HDMI or optical cable for kinks, damage, or a loose fit.
- Try another known-good cable if available.
- Update the TV software using the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Test PCM/Stereo.
- Compare the same content through the TV speakers.
- If only one source drops out, troubleshoot that source’s format and HDMI connection.
The symptom can narrow the search:
- Silence immediately after changing inputs often indicates an ARC/eARC or CEC handshake.
- Periodic dropouts can involve the cable, TV firmware, audio format, source device, or HDMI interference.
- If only Atmos drops out, investigate eARC, bandwidth, pass-through, and format compatibility before blaming the soundbar.
- If music is stable but TV audio drops, prioritize the TV signal path rather than Wi-Fi.
See Sonos’s guide for TV audio that stops or skips.

HDMI ARC/eARC
With HDMI ARC, HDMI-CEC must be enabled and the soundbar must be connected to the TV’s ARC port. Compatible HDMI setups can work with IR and RF remotes, depending on the TV and remote configuration.
Best Value
- Surround yourself in the story: Go deeper into every scene with spatial audio. Dolby Atmos and the upward-firing drivers work in concert to immerse you in a multidimensional soundstage. You’ll hear planes as if they’re flying overhead, sense footsteps moving across the room, and feel the music swell all around you.
- Feel the bass: Experience every rumble, roar, and beat you've been missing with clean, pulse-pounding bass. Sub 4 takes over the lowest frequencies so paired speakers are free to focus on midrange and high frequencies so everything sounds even clearer.
- Wonderfully wireless: Place Sub 4 anywhere in the room. It connects to the soundbar over WiFi, so you can create the setup that works best for your space.
- Perfectly tuned for the room: Using the microphones in your iOS device, Trueplay tuning technology analyzes the unique acoustics of your space and optimizes the EQ. So all your content sounds just the way it should.
- Breeze through setup: Simply plug in the power cable, connect your phone or tablet to WiFi, and open the Sonos app. It will guide you through connecting the soundbar to your TV and syncing your TV remote for streamlined control.
Optical
Optical connections do not carry CEC. The remote must generally use infrared (IR), not only Bluetooth or radio frequency (RF). In the current Sonos app, try Settings → room → Home Theater → Remote Control Setup. In S1 Controller, the path is Settings → System → Products → room → Remote Control Setup. Labels can vary by app version.
Only one remote can be programmed to control a Sonos home-theater speaker at a time. Apple TV, Samsung One, Samsung F-series, LG Magic Remote, cable, and satellite remotes may require additional configuration. Sonos explains the requirements for TV remotes and remote setup.
Model-specific connection limits
| Model | TV connection | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Ray | Digital optical | Requires a TV optical output. |
| Playbar | Digital optical | Remote behavior depends on IR setup. |
| Playbase | Digital optical | Requires a TV optical output. |
| Beam Gen 1/2 | HDMI ARC; optical adapter possible | Beam Gen 2 is not compatible with S1 Controller; optical removes CEC and TV voice-control benefits. |
| Arc / Arc SL | HDMI ARC/eARC; optical adapter possible | HDMI ARC/eARC is required for Atmos; Arc is not compatible with S1 Controller. |
| Arc Ultra | HDMI ARC/eARC | Atmos and advanced formats depend on the TV, source, and signal format. |

Do not factory-reset first
Reset only when Sonos Support instructs you to, when transferring the product to another owner, or when the app specifically recommends it after normal discovery and setup troubleshooting has failed. Document your system first and be prepared to set it up again. Reset procedures differ by model; use the model-specific steps on Sonos’s official reset page instead of using one universal button combination.
When is the soundbar probably defective?
Contact Sonos Support or pursue service when:
- The soundbar has no response after testing a known-good outlet and power cable.
- It repeatedly loses power.
- It fails with multiple known-good cables and sources.
- The TV and source work correctly through the built-in TV speakers, but a controlled soundbar-only test still fails.
- The product cannot be discovered after following official setup steps.
- It produces persistent distortion, crackling, overheating, a burning odor, or abnormal mechanical noise.
Do not conclude that the soundbar is dead solely because TV audio is absent. Connection, CEC, output-selection, and format problems are more likely explanations to rule out first.
What to tell Sonos Support
Have these details ready:
- Soundbar model and generation.
- TV brand and model.
- HDMI ARC/eARC or optical connection.
- Whether the soundbar appears in the Sonos app.
- Whether music plays normally.
- Whether the TV’s built-in speakers work.
- The exact error message.
- The audio format shown or selected by the TV or source.
A quick decision tree
Is the soundbar powered?
├─ No → Test outlet and cable; if still dead, contact Sonos.
└─ Yes
Is it visible in the Sonos app?
├─ No → Check Wi-Fi, setup, and discovery; avoid resetting initially.
└─ Yes
Does music play?
├─ No → Check app, system, network, and product status.
└─ Yes
Does TV audio play?
├─ No → Check ARC/eARC or optical, TV output, CEC, and format.
└─ Yes
Does it cut out?
├─ Yes → Reboot, inspect cable, test PCM, and isolate HDMI devices.
└─ No → Troubleshoot remote control or source-specific formats.
Should you replace the soundbar?
Replacement should follow controlled troubleshooting, not precede it. If your TV has only optical output, a Ray, Playbar, or Playbase can use that connection, but optical does not provide HDMI-CEC convenience or newer format support. A Beam or Arc requires a compatible ARC/eARC setup for its full HDMI features.
If the soundbar is confirmed faulty or your TV is incompatible with the features you need, compare current models on Sonos’s soundbar comparison page. Check the current price and availability before buying because promotions change. A replacement HDMI or optical cable is worthwhile only when the existing cable is visibly damaged or fails a controlled test; adding a Sub or rear speakers will not fix a silent soundbar.
