To connect Eclipse to a code-quality server, install and configure an integration that the server provider supports; Eclipse does not have a universal setting for connecting to any quality server. First identify whether you need server findings in the IDE, local checks using team rules, or scan results uploaded to a server. Those workflows are different, and only product documentation can confirm when findings appear.

Choose the integration that matches the feedback you need

Code-quality tools may check style, detect bugs, scan for security issues, or combine several kinds of analysis. Before installing anything, identify the server and the specific analysis feature your team expects to use in Eclipse.

Integration type What it can provide What to verify
Server-supported Eclipse plugin Depending on the product, it may analyze locally, retrieve server findings, upload scan results, or combine these functions. Supported Eclipse and server versions, installation source, authentication, project mapping, and documented sync or analysis behavior.
Language Server Protocol (LSP) A compatible language server can provide Eclipse features such as problem markers, completion, hover information, and navigation. The analyzer must supply a compatible language server and explain how it connects to its quality service. Eclipse LSP4E provides the IDE-side integration, not the language server or server connection.
Local Eclipse analyzer with shared rules Local checks can report issues while you work without connecting to a central analysis server. Whether the local analyzer uses the team’s configuration and whether its results match the server or CI analysis.
CI or web dashboard Analysis runs through a documented command-line or CI workflow, with results viewed in the tool’s reporting interface. Use this fallback if no supported Eclipse integration exists; a dashboard does not automatically send findings into Eclipse.

LSP4E connects Eclipse to compatible language servers; it does not install individual servers or make arbitrary quality services available in the IDE. See the LSP4E project scope.

Prepare the details your administrator or provider must confirm

  • Compatibility: The supported Eclipse release, operating system, language, project type, plugin release, and server version.
  • Installation: The provider’s current update-site URL or other supported installation route. The Eclipse Foundation marketplace information describes plugin discovery, but follow product-specific instructions for the integration itself.
  • Server and project: The reachable server URL and the exact project, application, or application-version identifier used to associate results.
  • Access: The required account or token, authentication method, and permissions for the target project.
  • Network and certificates: Access from your machine to the update site and server, including any required trusted certificates.
  • Analysis behavior: Whether checks run while editing, on save or build, after a manual scan, or only when results are uploaded or synchronized.

Do not put credentials or tokens in source control. If the server uses an internal or self-signed certificate, follow the product’s certificate and trust-store instructions rather than disabling certificate validation.

Example: configure Fortify’s Eclipse plugin for server synchronization

This is a product-specific example based on OpenText Fortify’s 25.4 documentation, not a general Eclipse setup recipe. The cited guide was generated October 28, 2025; check the documentation for your installed release before following exact instructions. Fortify documentation refers to Fortify Software Security Center (SSC), with some current materials using the name Application Security.

For this documented workflow, you need a server URL, access to an existing application version, and permission to use it. The guide describes a ToolsConnectToken for connecting tools; confirm the required token type and authentication method with your administrator and the guide for your version. See the Fortify Plugin for Eclipse 25.4 guide and its explanation of authentication token types.

  1. Install the Fortify Eclipse plugin using the installation instructions for your supported release.
  2. Ensure a local OpenText SAST installation is available if you intend to run local analysis; server synchronization is a separate configuration.
  3. In the plugin’s documented connection configuration, enter the SSC URL and select the configured login method.
  4. Authenticate, then select the existing application version you are authorized to access.
  5. Run or synchronize analysis as required by your workflow, and check where the plugin displays findings and what action updates them.

Fortify’s 25.4 local-scanning and synchronization documentation describes configuring the connection and selecting an application version. Its overview of local scanning explains that local analysis requires the local SAST installation. Uploading scan results or synchronizing with a server does not, by itself, establish continuous feedback as code is edited.

Distinguish live IDE feedback from uploaded scan results

After setup, verify the actual trigger and destination of the results rather than assuming that a server connection means live diagnostics. Check the provider’s documentation and confirm the behavior in your own Eclipse project.

  • While editing: Findings appear as you type only if the integration documents that behavior.
  • On save or build: A local project builder may run checks when files are saved or the project builds.
  • After a manual scan: The plugin may show results only after you explicitly start analysis.
  • After upload or synchronization: Results may be sent to a server or retrieved from it without appearing continuously in the editor.

For a local style-check example, the Eclipse Checkstyle plugin documents violations in the Problems view and editor annotations. Its project builder checks files on save when Eclipse Auto-Build is enabled, and configurations can be shared across projects or loaded from an external location. This is local Eclipse feedback, not proof that Eclipse is connected to a central quality server. See the Eclipse Checkstyle plugin documentation.

SpotBugs is another local-analysis example: its Eclipse plugin reports problem markers in source and the Problems view, and lists Eclipse Neon (4.6) or later as a requirement. Check its current documentation for compatibility before installing it: SpotBugs Eclipse plugin documentation.

Troubleshoot common setup problems

The plugin will not install

  • Confirm that the update site or marketplace listing comes from the plugin publisher.
  • Check the supported Eclipse release and whether your machine can reach the installation site.
  • Use the provider’s current installation instructions; marketplace discovery does not guarantee compatibility.

Authentication or access fails

  • Check the server URL, selected login method, token type and validity, and permissions for the target project or application version.
  • Confirm that the project or application identifier is correct and that your account is authorized to access it.
  • Keep tokens and credentials out of source control.

The server connection fails on TLS

Ask the administrator for the supported certificate and trust-store configuration, then follow the provider’s instructions. Do not disable certificate checks to work around a trust error.

No findings appear in Eclipse

  • Confirm that the expected analysis ran and that it included the relevant project files.
  • Check that the expected rules are enabled and that the plugin is showing results from the intended local or server-side analysis.
  • Inspect the Problems view filters and the plugin’s results view for hidden markers.
  • If using Checkstyle and expecting checks on save, verify that Eclipse Auto-Build is enabled, as described in its plugin documentation.

IDE results differ from CI

Compare analyzer versions, rule configuration, language and build classpaths, exclusions, and generated-source handling. Also establish whether Eclipse is reporting local analysis or server-side findings; those results may not represent the same run or configuration.

If there is no supported server integration

Use the analyzer’s documented command-line or CI workflow and access findings through its supported reporting interface. If local Eclipse feedback is still useful, a local analyzer with shared rules may help, but it should not be treated as equivalent to server analysis unless the provider documents that equivalence. An LSP setup is an option only when a compatible language server and its connection to the quality service are documented.
