The “new device” in the headline was SoilReader, a Canadian system designed to estimate soil properties as farm equipment moved through a field. The original report appeared on February 24, 2020—not in 2026—and described a product still undergoing accuracy and durability work. As of August 18, 2026, its official website still carries legacy 2020 availability language, so current sales, specifications, and performance cannot be confirmed.
What SoilReader was designed to do
Developed by SoilReader founder and CEO Erik Eising, SoilReader was presented as an on-the-go soil-analysis system. A coulter-mounted optical sensor would pass through the field, with a sapphire-glass window contacting soil. A spectrometer captured reflected near-infrared light, and an onboard microcomputer processed the signal. The aim was to estimate soil properties without collecting and sending a separate sample to a laboratory.
The 2020 report said the system could measure at multiple depths in one pass, but did not specify the depth range, number of depth bands, working speed, or compatible implement configurations. The company described the coulter—a circular cutting disc—as less disruptive than a shank that drags through the soil. Less disturbance may help keep soil contact and measurement conditions more consistent; it does not mean the sensor has no physical interaction with the soil.
Near-infrared spectroscopy works by measuring light reflected from a material. Spectral patterns can correlate with properties such as moisture, organic matter, and texture. Turning those patterns into useful estimates depends on calibration: models need to be compared with appropriate reference measurements and may behave differently across soils and field conditions. SoilReader’s original coverage did not provide its calibration equations or independent performance results. The 2020 report on SoilReader describes the device and its development status.

Nine properties were claimed, but “measure” needs context
The report attributed estimates of these nine properties to the system:
- Nitrogen
- Phosphorus
- Potassium
- pH
- Organic matter
- Electrical conductivity (EC)
- Soil moisture
- Clay
- Sand
That list does not establish that each property was directly sensed or measured with laboratory-equivalent accuracy. The report gives no constituent-by-constituent error ranges, detection limits, validation sample sizes, or independent peer-reviewed results. It also does not say whether “nitrogen” means total nitrogen, nitrate, plant-available nitrogen, or a model-derived proxy—or whether phosphorus and potassium are directly sensed or inferred from spectral data. Those distinctions matter if a reading will guide fertilizer or lime application.

- 【Quick Accurate measurement】The latest probe detection technology in 2026 can quickly and accurately measure the pH, moisture and temperature in the soil, with the light intensity of the light sensor analysis on the instrument, it can allow you to know when to water, to control the pH and temperature acidity, and determine whether the plants have enough light to better cultivate the plants more scientifically.
- 【Easy to use】Just simply plug the probe into the soil about 4 inches(10cm) , wait 10 seconds to read intuitive data, and you will get an accurate and precise reading immediately.(This soil tester cannot be used directly to test any liquid. When measuring the soil, if the soil is too dry, do not insert it into dry and hard soil. Before testing, please water the soil test area and wait for 10 minutes, otherwise the testing machine will be damaged.)When testing soil pH and moisture, you need to read data from at least 5 locations in the soil. The average value of all the data will be the final soil pH and moisture.
- 【More convenient to read】The screen content adopts visual content design, which helps you read the data through specific values and easy to understand graphics, so that even novice growers can easily understand your soil conditions. The 45° rotating head design allows you to bend your head 0°-45°, allowing you to easily view the screen content without bending over.
What “real time” means—and what it does not
Here, “real time” means on-the-go or near-real-time estimates generated as an implement travels through a field, rather than results returned after samples are collected and processed in a laboratory. It should not be taken to mean instant laboratory-quality chemistry, an immediate agronomic recommendation, or reliable readings in every soil and weather condition. Nor does a dense stream of readings remove the need for calibration or laboratory checks.
If validated for a farm’s soils and workflow, high-density readings could help map within-field variability, refine management zones, compare conditions at different depths, or inform variable-rate fertilizer and lime prescriptions. These are plausible uses, not documented SoilReader outcomes: the cited coverage reports no attributable yield gains, input savings, reduction in sampling costs, or payback period.

- Accurate Soil Moisture Detection: The XLUX Soil Moisture Meter can tell you if the soil deep inside your pot or garden is dry, moist or wet; whereas your eyes and fingers can only determine the moisture level of the soil surface. The probe is 5.5 inches (14 cm) longer than regular styles, allowing it to measure the soil moisture at the bottom of larger and deeper flower pots.
- Easy-to-Read Large Dial: The large dial is easy to read and includes three zones with ten scales, making it very straightforward to understand.
- Immediate Moisture Reading: Insert the probe into the soil, and without waiting, the dial will immediately display the moisture level. You can then decide whether your plant needs watering based on the measurement. Do not leave this moisture meter in the soil for more than 5 minutes, as the metal tip will gradually corrode.
- Less Damage: A single probe causes less damage to plant roots compared to double or multiple probes, and when you remove the probe after testing, it won't bring out much soil.
- Usage Precautions: Do not use it to test very hard soil. Do not test water or other liquids. After testing, please wipe the probe clean.
What the public record says about validation and availability
The original article said SoilReader was in the final stages of documenting field accuracy and durability, and anticipated purchase availability in 2020. That was a forecast, not proof that the product launched or completed validation. A later trade report expected production units for the 2021 seeding season and cited an approximate US$25,000 price. A 2022 technology assessment classified SoilReader as commercially ready but listed a different estimated cost: $25,000 per year plus a $5,000 annual subscription. These are conflicting historical estimates, not a verified current price.
As of August 18, 2026, SoilReader’s official website still showed old “coming in 2020” language and an interest form, rather than a current product listing, specification sheet, dealer directory, or checkout page. The available public information therefore does not establish whether units are currently sold, what they cost, what regions are supported, or what accuracy and service terms apply. Do not assume the 2020 launch forecast came true or treat the old price estimates as current.

How to evaluate on-the-go soil sensing
Before using any sensor-generated nutrient estimate to make a prescription, ask the vendor for evidence and operating details that allow you to judge its fit:
Recommended Free Tools
- Accuracy and reference method: Request separate validation statistics for each reported property, the lab or reference method used, sample sizes, soil types and regions tested, and uncertainty or error ranges. Ask whether a value is directly sensed, calibrated to laboratory results, or inferred by a model.
- Field conditions: Ask how performance changes with wet or dry soil, residue, stones, compaction, changing texture, operating speed, vibration, and sensor contact. Confirm working depth, compatible equipment, cleaning needs, and optical-window wear.
- Calibration and transferability: Find out whether models are locally calibrated, how often calibration checks are needed, how updates are delivered, and whether models have been validated on soils like yours. A model trained in one region may not transfer cleanly to another.
- Data and workflow: Confirm GPS requirements, export formats, data ownership, farm-software compatibility, and whether the system can provide raw readings and uncertainty—not only a finished map or recommendation. Check whether it creates prescriptions or merely supplies data for another tool.
- Economics and support: Compare purchase or service fees, subscriptions, calibration costs, cost per acre, labor saved, and expected use across seasons. Ask about warranty, replacement parts, downtime, regional service, and the acres needed to justify the investment.
- Decision safeguards: Establish which readings need laboratory confirmation before they drive fertilizer or lime rates. A map with many data points can look precise even when its underlying estimates are uncertain.
Alternatives depend on the job
These products are not interchangeable: they differ in sensing approach, measured properties, workflow, and commercial model. Ask vendors for current specifications and validation relevant to your location before comparing them.

Its sensing and downloads and software pages provide product information. | Public pricing was not shown on the reviewed official pages; ask for a quote and confirm what the selected configuration measures. |
| CRP Soil Action SAM | Vendor-advertised live readings and variable-rate workflow integration. The vendor listed Handheld SAM at $5,000+ plus $14 per reading, with a 500-reading minimum; SAM Live at $10,000+ plus $3,000 per year starting, covering up to 1,000 acres. | Those were vendor price signals observed on August 18, 2026; verify the quote, geography, included measurements, and terms. The entry cost and minimum may not suit small acreages. |
| Doktar SoilScanner | A portable, infrared- and AI-assisted analysis workflow that the vendor says returns results through an app in minutes. Its page lists properties including N, P, K, pH, moisture, clay, and organic matter. | No public price or public accuracy table was shown on the reviewed page. Confirm local calibration, what each value represents, and independent evidence before purchase. |
| Conventional laboratory soil testing | Reference measurements using established analytical methods; results can anchor calibration and support nutrient decisions. | Requires sampling labor and a turnaround period. Sparse or inconsistent sampling locations and depths can miss field variability. |
| Targeted moisture or EC sensors | Focused monitoring, particularly when the practical question is irrigation timing or soil conditions at a monitored location. Examples include Spectrum Technologies, Vernier Go Direct Soil Moisture Sensor, and EarthScout. | These narrower sensors are not substitutes for multi-constituent, on-the-go soil chemistry mapping. |
For context, prices listed by vendors and catalogs during the August 18, 2026 research pass included Spectrum WaterScout moisture products at roughly $115–$275 and a FieldScout reader at $365, Vernier’s Go Direct Soil Moisture Sensor at $159, and CRP Soil Action’s prices above. These figures describe different products and use cases; they do not establish comparable capabilities or current quotes. For any shortlisted system, verify availability, pricing, measurements, and terms directly with the vendor.
For a nutrient prescription, high-resolution sensing is most useful when its estimates are validated for the relevant soils and cross-checked against a sound sampling and agronomic process. SoilReader’s original promise was compelling, but the public evidence cited here does not establish current availability or independently verified, constituent-level performance.
