There is no single social media thumbnail size: the right canvas depends on whether you are making a video thumbnail, a feed image, or a link preview. As a starting point, use the intended platform and placement’s aspect ratio, then confirm its current upload guidance before publishing. YouTube’s current Help guidance recommends 3840 × 2160 pixels for standard-video custom thumbnails and 2160 × 3840 for Shorts; a widely used cross-platform chart gives different starting dimensions for other placements.
Quick-reference sizes by platform and placement
The dimensions below are starting points, not interchangeable universal specifications. SocialRoute’s reference, last updated August 2026, is a secondary source for the non-YouTube figures; it is not a substitute for the platform’s own current upload instructions. YouTube’s figures come from its Help guidance.
| Platform | Placement | Starting dimensions | Aspect ratio | Evidence and qualification |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Feed image | 1080 × 1350 px | 4:5 | Secondary-reference figure from SocialRoute, August 2026; confirm the intended Instagram surface before publishing. | |
| Link preview | 1200 × 630 px | 1.91:1 | Secondary-reference figure from SocialRoute, August 2026; this is for a link preview, not every Facebook image placement. | |
| X | Image listed in the cross-platform chart | 1600 × 900 px | 16:9 | Secondary-reference figure from SocialRoute, August 2026; verify the relevant X surface and current guidance. |
| Link preview | 1200 × 627 px | 1.91:1 | Secondary-reference figure from SocialRoute, August 2026; this is a link-preview starting point. | |
| TikTok | Vertical image listed in the cross-platform chart | 1080 × 1920 px | 9:16 | Secondary-reference figure from SocialRoute, August 2026; confirm how the chosen TikTok placement uses the image. |
| YouTube | Standard-video custom thumbnail | 3840 × 2160 px recommended | 16:9 | Current YouTube Help recommendation. YouTube also lists a minimum width of 640 px. |
| YouTube | Shorts custom thumbnail | 2160 × 3840 px recommended | 9:16 | Current YouTube Help recommendation. YouTube also lists a minimum height of 640 px. |
| YouTube | Thumbnail for experiments | 1280 × 720 px is the 720p threshold | 16:9 | YouTube says thumbnails below 720p (1280 × 720) are downscaled to 854 × 480 for experiments. This is not its current recommended standard-video resolution. |
“Thumbnail” can refer to different assets, even within one service. A video cover, a feed image, and a link preview may be shown in different contexts and cropped differently. Match the row to the placement you intend to publish rather than treating a platform name alone as a complete specification.
Why aspect ratio matters as much as pixels
Pixel dimensions describe an image’s width and height. Aspect ratio describes the shape of its frame. For example, 16:9 is a wide landscape frame, 9:16 is vertical, and 4:5 is portrait. An image can have enough pixels yet still be the wrong shape for its destination.

#1 Best Overall
If a platform places a differently shaped image into a fixed preview, it may crop the sides or top and bottom. That can cut off a face, logo, or text even when the original file meets a resolution recommendation. Keep the main subject and any essential wording away from the edges likely to be cropped. There is no universal safe-area measurement established for every service and placement, so inspect the actual preview where the platform provides one.
- Use 16:9 for the standard YouTube video-thumbnail recommendation in current YouTube Help.
- Use 9:16 for YouTube Shorts’ current recommendation and the secondary-reference TikTok starting point.
- Do not assume a 4:5 Instagram feed image and a 9:16 vertical video cover will frame the same content equally well.
- Use the link-preview rows for link previews; do not assume those ratios describe a platform’s feed, profile, or video artwork.
YouTube thumbnail sizes and upload limits
Standard videos
YouTube’s current custom-thumbnail Help guidance recommends 3840 × 2160 pixels in a 16:9 ratio. It says the custom image should be as large as possible and lists 640 pixels as the minimum width. This is why older or common charts that show 1280 × 720 should not be presented as YouTube’s current recommended standard-video resolution.
Rank #2
Shorts
For Shorts, YouTube recommends 2160 × 3840 pixels, a 9:16 frame, and lists 640 pixels as the minimum height. Appearance can vary by surface: on YouTube Home, Explore, and subscription pages, a custom 16:9 thumbnail for a vertical video may be replaced with an automatically generated 4:5 thumbnail. YouTube says the custom image still appears on other listed surfaces, including the watch feed, watch history, and non-mobile platforms. A design that works in the player or one feed therefore may not be framed the same way everywhere.
YouTube Help says Shorts thumbnail changes are currently available only through YouTube Studio on a computer. If the thumbnail needs updating, use the computer version of Studio rather than assuming the mobile workflow exposes the same control.

YouTube lists JPG and PNG as example image formats. Its stated file-size limits depend on the upload device and thumbnail type:
| Upload device | Video thumbnail | Podcast thumbnail | Shorts thumbnail |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mobile | 2 MB | 10 MB | The cited guidance does not state a separate mobile limit for Shorts. |
| Desktop | 50 MB | 50 MB | 50 MB |
These limits are the ones listed on YouTube’s Help page; check that page again if your upload is rejected, since platform requirements can change. A file being under the size limit does not make its dimensions or aspect ratio correct for the target placement.

What 1280 × 720 means for thumbnail experiments
YouTube separately says thumbnails below 720p (1280 × 720) will be downscaled to 854 × 480 for experiments. That statement concerns thumbnail experiments; it does not replace the 3840 × 2160 recommendation for a standard-video custom thumbnail. The two figures answer different questions: one is the current recommended resolution, and the other is a threshold relevant to how experiment images are handled.
How to prepare an image that survives the crop
- Identify the exact placement. Decide whether you are making a standard video thumbnail, Shorts cover, feed image, or link preview. If one image will appear in more than one placement, note each surface rather than relying on a broad platform label.
- Set the canvas ratio before composing. Start with the appropriate ratio in the quick-reference table. Where the platform publishes a current official recommendation, use that over a secondary chart.
- Compose for the frame. Keep faces, product details, logos, and essential text inside the central portion of the image. This is a practical precaution, not a claim that every platform uses the same crop or safe-area boundary.
- Export at the target dimensions and an accepted format. For YouTube, the cited Help guidance lists JPG and PNG examples and states the device-dependent file limits above. For the other entries, verify the current platform upload rules before export.
- Check the real preview. Inspect the image in the intended placement, including mobile or alternate surfaces if they matter to your audience. For YouTube vertical videos, specifically account for the documented 4:5 replacement on Home, Explore, and subscription pages.
- Revise the crop rather than stretching the artwork. If the preview cuts off content, make a version composed for that placement’s frame. Stretching a 16:9 image into 9:16 changes the proportions; it does not create a well-composed vertical thumbnail.
Common sizing mistakes and fixes
- Using one file for every platform: the listed ratios range from 1.91:1 link previews to 9:16 vertical images. Export separate crops when the placements differ.
- Treating a chart as an official specification: the non-YouTube dimensions above are secondary-reference starting points. Check the platform’s own current instructions for the exact placement.
- Using 1280 × 720 as YouTube’s current recommendation: YouTube currently recommends 3840 × 2160 for standard videos. The 1280 × 720 figure is separately relevant to its experiment downscaling threshold.
- Putting text at the edge: cropping may remove it. Move critical content inward and inspect the destination preview; no single cross-platform safe margin is established here.
- Ignoring vertical-video surface differences: a custom 16:9 thumbnail may not be the image viewers see on certain YouTube surfaces for vertical videos. Check the 4:5 behavior before finalizing the design.
- Uploading a file that exceeds the device limit: on YouTube, a mobile video-thumbnail limit is 2 MB while the desktop limit is 50 MB. Check the upload device and content type, then export a smaller file if necessary.

How to choose a size without guessing
Use the exact placement first, the platform’s current first-party specification second, and a cross-platform chart only as a provisional reference. The SocialRoute dimensions dated August 2026 are useful for planning non-YouTube feed and preview artwork, but they are not independently confirmed official specifications. For YouTube, distinguish the standard-video and Shorts recommendations, and account for the vertical-video crop behavior by surface. No single size guarantees better engagement; the evidence here establishes dimensions and display behavior, not a universal performance advantage.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does using a larger thumbnail automatically improve engagement?
No universal engagement advantage is established by the cited sizing guidance. The recommendations address dimensions and display behavior, not a controlled comparison of engagement.
Are the non-YouTube sizes official platform requirements?
No. The listed Instagram, Facebook, X, LinkedIn, and TikTok figures are secondary-reference starting points from SocialRoute’s August 2026 chart. Confirm the current requirements for the exact placement with the platform.
