Your smartphone can help you plan a purchase, compare the real price, check a product, find a valid coupon, pay, and keep the records you may need later. The useful habit is to treat it as a shopping assistant—not just a faster checkout screen. A scan or wallet entry is not proof that a deal is good, a seller is trustworthy, or a receipt has been saved.
Plan the purchase before you shop
Start with a list in Notes, Reminders, your calendar, or a shopping-list app. Separate essentials from replacements and optional purchases. For each item, note a target price, acceptable substitutes, and a spending limit before opening a retailer app.
- For a replacement, photograph the label or product and record its model number, size, color, capacity, or connector type. This helps avoid buying a similar-looking but incompatible item.
- Compare unit prices—not just package prices. A larger package is not automatically cheaper per ounce, count, or use.
- Include the costs around the item: shipping, taxes, delivery tips, service fees, required membership, installation, accessories, and possible return shipping.
- For groceries, check whether a promotion requires multiple units or a loyalty account and phone number.

Compare the exact product and its delivered price
In a store, use the camera to scan a barcode or search the exact model number in the retailer’s official app or a reputable comparison service. Then compare the listing with the item in your hand. Check size, quantity, generation, condition, warranty, included accessories, and seller identity; marketplace results may come from a third party rather than the retailer.

- Scan the barcode or search the model number.
- Confirm that each result is the same version and condition.
- Compare the retailer’s price with one or two reputable alternatives.
- Add shipping, taxes, required memberships, and other charges; check delivery time and local stock.
- Read the store’s price-match conditions and ask whether the shelf price differs from the online price.
- Save a screenshot if the price or promotion matters, then verify it at checkout.
A barcode database can be stale or identify a regional package; a low listing may be used, open-box, incompatible, or counterfeit. Prices and stock can also vary by location. A Federal Reserve study of U.S. smartphone owners published in 2014 found that 44% reported comparison shopping in stores, 31% used barcode apps for price comparisons, and 42% used phones for reviews or product information. Compare the total, not the headline
Use this as a practical calculation:
Final cost = item price + mandatory fees + shipping + taxes + required membership + required accessories − legitimate discounts − applicable rewards.
The FTC’s Rule on Unfair or Deceptive Fees took effect on May 12, 2025. It requires covered businesses to display mandatory fees in the total price and disclose excluded charges before payment, but coverage and exceptions apply; taxes, shipping, and optional items may be treated differently. Use the camera to check details and keep evidence
A phone camera can scan a QR code, read a product label, open a manufacturer page or manual, record a serial number, and capture a shelf label. It can also document the condition of a delivery or a price discrepancy. The built-in camera is often enough; install a separate scanner only if it adds a useful feature such as price history, receipt parsing, or inventory management.

Before entering a password, payment detail, or personal information after scanning a QR code, inspect the web address. A code in a shop or on a package can still lead to a fraudulent page. For evidence, photograph the full receipt, including date, store, item description, and transaction number, rather than only the total. Keep pictures of damaged packaging or an incorrect delivery with the order confirmation.
For gift-card purchases, keep both the card and store receipt. The FTC recommends taking a picture of them when reporting a gift-card scam: FTC gift-card guidance.
Research reviews without relying on the star average
Use your phone to compare more than one source: product reviews, professional testing, warranty terms, return policy, and recent reports of failures. Check that a review refers to the exact model and variant you are considering. A review page may combine several generations, sizes, colors, or sellers.

- Check review volume and whether a verified-purchase label is available, while remembering neither proves a review is genuine.
- Notice disclosures of free products, payments, or other connections to the company.
- Separate complaints about shipping or a particular seller from reports about the product itself.

Use retailer apps and coupons selectively
An official retailer app may combine loyalty prices, digital coupons, inventory, pickup, delivery, purchase history, and digital receipts. It is worth installing when you shop there often or the functions save meaningful time or money. If the mobile website does the same job, or the savings are small, an account and extra app may not be worth the data and effort.
- Install the app from the official App Store or Google Play listing.
- Review its permissions and create an account only if the expected benefit is worthwhile.
- Activate or clip coupons before checkout; check the expiration, exclusions, minimum spend, and required quantity.
- Confirm the loyalty account was recognized and the discount appears on the receipt.
A coupon may not combine with a manufacturer coupon or price match, and a store’s inventory may be inaccurate. If a discount fails, check whether it was activated, whether the item was excluded, and whether the quantity or account requirement was met. Save a screenshot before checkout when the offer is important.
The FTC’s 2014 review of mobile shopping apps found gaps in disclosures about payment-related liability and data handling. Pay with a mobile wallet when it fits
Apple Pay works in supported apps, App Clips, and websites where the Apple Pay button appears. At checkout, tap Apple Pay, review the card and billing, shipping, and contact details, then authenticate and confirm. Availability depends on the country or region, merchant, and card issuer. For contactless Google Wallet payments, you need a supported payment method, a compatible phone with NFC enabled, a supported region, and a terminal that accepts contactless payment. Google Wallet contactless payment requirements.
A wallet can reduce repeated entry of card details and require device authentication, but it does not make an unfamiliar seller legitimate or guarantee a refund. Keep the merchant’s receipt, and use a protected phone. For online purchases, avoid entering payment details after following an unexpected text or QR link; go to the merchant’s official site or app instead.

Save the merchant confirmation, itemized receipt, order number, tracking number, return deadline, warranty, and serial number. A note or folder named for the purchase makes them easier to retrieve. Wallet history is a convenient index, not a substitute for the merchant’s detailed receipt or your bank statement.

Apple Wallet orders
For eligible orders from participating merchants, open Wallet, tap More, then Orders, and select an order. Available details can include status, estimated arrival, order number, total, and payment status. Use Manage Order, the merchant contact option, or a carrier link when needed. Google Wallet transactions and orders
To look up a transaction, open Google Wallet, tap View more, then View more transactions, and search or select the purchase. Compare it with the original receipt and bank statement; Wallet may not show all merchant details. Google Wallet transaction history.
In the U.S., Google Wallet can show supported online orders associated with Gmail, including available receipts and tracking. Relevant Gmail settings, merchant support, geography, and account association affect what appears. In Wallet, tap View more, View more transactions, and the Orders filter. Protect shopping privacy and accounts
Retailer apps and loyalty accounts may collect or infer location, browsing and search behavior, purchase history, payment metadata, device identifiers, and preferences. Google says Wallet and Google Pay may store transaction and payment-method activity and provide controls for personalization and data use. Review those settings rather than assuming all features work without account data: Google Pay privacy and personalization controls.
- Deny location access unless a feature such as nearby inventory or pickup needs it; remove access afterward if you prefer.
- Do not grant contacts access unless the app has a clear function you need.
- Use a unique password and multifactor authentication for shopping accounts.
- Avoid saving card details on unfamiliar merchant sites, and remove retailer apps you no longer use.
- Review loyalty and personalization settings, and avoid sharing payment details after an unexpected link.
The FTC has examined individualized pricing practices that may use data such as location, demographics, browsing patterns, and shopping history. This is an area of regulatory scrutiny, not proof that every retailer changes every customer’s price. The effect varies by retailer and transaction; switching browsers or using private browsing is not a guaranteed way to get a lower price. FTC surveillance-pricing study announcement.
Recognize scams and know where to turn
Watch for fake retailer apps, sponsored search results imitating a merchant, counterfeit listings, social-media storefronts, QR-code phishing, fake delivery texts, and customer-service numbers posted by scammers. Be especially wary of prices that seem implausibly low and sellers demanding gift cards, cryptocurrency, or wire transfers. A wallet’s presence does not validate the seller.
Before buying from an unfamiliar seller, find the site independently, check its return policy and contact information, and save the listing and confirmation. The FTC recommends keeping receipts and confirmation emails and using a credit card when possible because it generally offers stronger dispute protections than many alternative payment methods. If an order goes wrong, contact the seller through its official site and promptly contact your card issuer or payment provider about available dispute options. Google Wallet or Google Pay does not issue refunds for purchases from non-Google websites or apps; the merchant handles the return or refund. Google Pay help. For a missing wallet entry, wrong tracking, or incomplete transaction details, check the merchant receipt and bank statement first, then contact the merchant. Avoid payment entry on unknown public Wi-Fi where practical; use cellular data or a trusted network if a transaction page behaves unexpectedly.
