To make an embedded editor resize intelligently, first decide which behavior you mean: a starting width and height, a user-dragged resize handle, automatic height growth as content changes, or resizing an image or video inside the document. These are separate features, and the right setting depends on the editor and its mode.

Choose what should resize

“Smart resize” is not one shared setting across editors. Identify the target before changing configuration:

  • Initial dimensions: the editor starts at a chosen width or height.
  • Manual resizing: the person editing drags a handle to change the editor’s dimensions.
  • Content-driven growth: the editor area expands vertically to fit its content, optionally within minimum and maximum bounds.
  • Embedded media resizing: a video or other media item changes size inside the document; this does not resize the editor itself.

For TinyMCE, use size options for the initial dimensions and its Autoresize plugin for content-driven vertical growth. For CKEditor 4, distinguish Auto Grow from the Editor Resize plugin and check whether the editor uses classic or inline mode. CKEditor 5’s cited resize feature applies to media embeds in the document, not the editor container.

Configure TinyMCE dimensions and automatic height

Set the initial size

Set height and width in tinymce.init when you want a defined starting size. A numeric value for height means pixels. Width also accepts CSS strings, including values such as 300px or a percentage. TinyMCE’s documented height option does not currently support values such as 100%, 10vh, or auto; see the TinyMCE size options.

Let content drive the height

Enable the autoresize plugin when the editable content should control vertical height. Use min_height to define a lower bound. Set max_height if you want growth to stop at a limit; beyond that point, the bounded editor can scroll internally rather than continuing to expand. The plugin removes the resize handle by default. The regular resize option and autoresizing serve different purposes: one controls manual resizing, while the plugin follows content vertically.

Example configuration:

tinymce.init({
  selector: '#editor',
  width: '100%',
  height: 300,
  plugins: 'autoresize',
  min_height: 200,
  max_height: 700
});

These values illustrate the option types; choose bounds that fit your own layout. If your application inserts or removes content programmatically and the size needs to be recalculated, invoke the documented mceAutoResize command after the update:

tinymce.activeEditor.execCommand('mceAutoResize');

Consult the size options and Autoresize documentation for the version you deploy.

Configure CKEditor 4: check mode, then choose a resize behavior

Classic and inline mode do not share dimension behavior

CKEditor 4’s configured width and height apply in classic mode. Its size documentation says these settings are ignored in inline mode. If a height setting appears ineffective, confirm the editor mode before changing values or adding CSS. See CKEditor 4 size configuration.

Use Auto Grow for content-driven height

The Auto Grow plugin adjusts height to follow content. Its example shows autoGrow_minHeight, autoGrow_maxHeight, and autoGrow_bottomSpace. The documented example uses 200 px minimum height, 600 px maximum height, and 50 px bottom space; those are sample values, not universal recommendations.

CKEDITOR.replace('editor', {
  extraPlugins: 'autogrow',
  autoGrow_minHeight: 200,
  autoGrow_maxHeight: 600,
  autoGrow_bottomSpace: 50
});

Check the CKEditor 4 Auto Grow example and confirm that the plugin is present in the bundle and compatible with the deployed CKEditor 4 version.

Use Editor Resize for a user-dragged handle

The Editor Resize plugin provides manual resizing, including direction and minimum or maximum bounds. Use it when the user should choose the editor size rather than having content determine it. If manual resizing is not wanted, disable the feature in the deployed configuration. The resize example describes the plugin’s behavior and options. Auto Grow and Editor Resize address different interactions; choose one or combine them only if the resulting behavior is intentional.

Do not confuse editor sizing with media sizing

CKEditor 5 media embeds

CKEditor 5’s documented media resizing feature changes the width of media embeds inside content. Handles maintain the media’s aspect ratio, and toolbar controls can be available. This changes the embedded item, not the outer editor container; see CKEditor 5 media embed resizing.

Froala adjustable height

Froala’s adjustable-height example describes heightMin and heightMax as bounds within which editor height adjusts to fit content. The example alone does not establish all version-specific integration details, so check the documentation for the exact build installed before adopting a production configuration.

Canva rich media in an iframe

Canva’s rich-media embedding documentation describes media embedded in an iframe that users can position, rotate, and resize. That describes the media experience; it does not document a general iframe-sizing API for rich-text editors.

Account for iframe and responsive layout boundaries

Editor options are not a universal protocol for resizing every embedded editor. The cited vendor documentation does not establish a shared parent-frame messaging or cross-origin autoresize mechanism. If the editor is hosted inside an iframe, determine whether it is same-origin or cross-origin and consult the documentation for that specific editor, integration, version, and hosting arrangement before relying on parent-page resizing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Test the configured editor at the viewport sizes your application supports. In particular, verify that its width fits the available layout, that the chosen height bounds behave as expected, and that reaching a maximum does not hide content or make scrolling confusing. If the editor’s surrounding layout changes after initialization, verify that the editor integration supports the resize action you need rather than assuming a content autoresize option will respond to every parent-layout change.

A practical configuration decision checklist

  • Is the desired result a fixed starting size, manual user resizing, content-driven height, or a larger media item inside the content?
  • Does the selected editor feature provide a minimum and maximum, and what happens when the maximum is reached?
  • Does the setting apply to the editor mode in use, especially classic versus inline mode in CKEditor 4?
  • Will the application need to request a recalculation after programmatic content changes?
  • Is the editor inside a same-origin or cross-origin iframe, and does the integration document a supported resizing mechanism?
  • Have you checked the actual editor version and plugin bundle deployed, rather than relying on a setting from a different build?

Troubleshooting common resize problems

TinyMCE ignores a percentage or viewport-based height

Cause: TinyMCE’s documented height option does not support values such as 100% or 10vh.
Fix: Use a supported height value for the initial size and use the autoresize plugin for content-driven vertical growth. Treat width separately; it accepts CSS strings such as percentages.

TinyMCE stops growing or remains too short

Cause: A configured max_height may have been reached, or content was inserted programmatically without a recalculation.
Fix: Check the bound and, after programmatic content changes, run mceAutoResize as documented. Confirm that the autoresize plugin is enabled.

CKEditor 4 does not honor configured width or height

Cause: The editor may be in inline mode, where the documented config.width and config.height settings are ignored.
Fix: Confirm the mode. For inline mode, do not expect classic-mode dimension settings to control the editor; follow the integration’s documented layout approach.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

CKEditor 4 does not grow with content or show a resize handle

Cause: Auto Grow and Editor Resize are distinct plugins, and the required plugin may not be included or configured in the deployed build.
Fix: Check the installed version and plugin bundle, then enable the feature that matches the intended behavior. Auto Grow follows content; Editor Resize provides manual control.

Resizing a video does not change the editor’s outer dimensions

Cause: The setting resizes media inside the document, not the editor container.
Fix: Configure the editor’s own size or autoresize behavior separately. In CKEditor 5, the cited media-resize feature concerns embedded media.

An editor in an iframe does not respond to a parent-page resize

Cause: The editor may be cross-origin, or the integration may not provide a documented communication mechanism for resizing.
Fix: Check the specific hosting and editor integration documentation. Do not assume that one vendor’s size option establishes a generic cross-origin iframe protocol.
