Yes, a real demonstration showed how a person’s face captured by smart glasses could be matched to online information—but it did not make ordinary Ray-Ban Meta glasses automatically identify every passerby. In October 2024, Harvard students AnhPhu Nguyen and Caine Ardayfio presented I-XRAY, a custom workflow that combined glasses with external face search, web searches and language-model processing. The students described results in about 90 seconds, not literally “in seconds” for everyone. Harvard’s project description and Boston Globe reporting help put the viral claim in context.
What the I-XRAY demonstration did
I-XRAY was a chain of tools, not a facial-recognition feature operating entirely inside the glasses. At a high level, the glasses captured an image or footage; software outside the glasses sent a face image to a search service; the workflow tried to connect a visually similar result to a name; and automated searches and language-model processing gathered information associated with that identity. Reporting identified PimEyes as the face-search component, alongside public or commercially accessible information sources. Futurism’s report describes the reported components, while Harvard’s project page attributes the demonstration to Nguyen and Ardayfio.
The reported result time was about 90 seconds, according to the students’ description—not a guaranteed instant lookup. It depended on a usable image, network access, available services, a match in searchable material and enough information online to connect that match to a person. The system could fail to find someone, return several plausible candidates or attach the wrong information to a face.

“Hack” is an attention-grabbing but technically imprecise description. The demonstration showed a creative repurposing of camera capture and connected services; the cited accounts do not establish that the students broke into Meta’s systems, defeated the glasses’ security or activated a secret facial-recognition function built into the 2024 consumer glasses. In I-XRAY, the glasses served as a discreet camera and interface for a broader, externally operated identification workflow.

That distinction matters: the privacy risk does not require a hardware vulnerability. A wearable camera can make image capture easier, while external search and data-linking services do the identification work. I-XRAY also is not evidence that ordinary Meta glasses in 2024 automatically recognized everyone nearby.
What information might a workflow like this surface?
Coverage of I-XRAY described possible results including names, social-media accounts, employment details, addresses, phone numbers and relatives or associated people. These are potential findings, not guaranteed outputs. A face does not contain someone’s address or job; it can act as a search key that links an image to webpages, social profiles, people-search services or other public and commercially available records. Information found this way may be stale, duplicated, brokered or associated with the wrong person. A listed phone number might no longer belong to its subject; an address could refer to someone else; and several sites repeating the same error do not make it true. “Publicly findable” does not mean accurate, harmless or appropriate to compile and deliver during a brief encounter.
Why the accuracy problem can be dangerous
A face-search result is not verified identity. Search services may return visually similar images rather than a confirmed match. Image quality, angle, lighting, motion, occlusion and the size or makeup of the searchable collection can affect results. If an automated system then summarizes the wrong person’s pages fluently, it can make an uncertain match look authoritative.

Consider a hypothetical case: a blurry image of one person returns a page belonging to someone with a similar appearance. An automated search then joins that name to an old address and employer listing. The resulting profile may look coherent while being about an entirely different person. The most serious failure is not always no result; it can be a plausible-looking false profile. Such an output should never be treated as proof of identity or wrongdoing.
Why glasses change the social context
Smart glasses do not invent face search, but they can make the surrounding behavior less visible and easier to repeat. Compared with raising a phone, a wearer may capture an image from a natural viewpoint, keep their hands free and record in a way bystanders do not immediately notice. Connected devices can also make it easier to pair capture with an assistant or phone-based workflow.

The resulting concern is about convenience, scale and consent as much as the recognition technology itself. Aggregating scattered facts can change their practical privacy impact: information that took time and effort to find becomes available in a social interaction with little warning. This can create risks for people in bars, workplaces, schools, protests, clinics or shelters, and for people whose addresses or relationships are already exposed online.

In June 2026, WIRED reported that code in Meta’s companion app contained an unreleased system called NameTag. According to its report, the system was designed to recognize people seen by the glasses and alert the wearer when a match was found. WIRED described it as not publicly enabled at the time of reporting. That is a separate story from I-XRAY: one was a student demonstration built around external search and data correlation; the other was reporting about code for a potential Meta feature. WIRED’s report does not establish that NameTag shipped, what its final controls would be, or whether it would be available in any particular region.

On March 17, 2026, Senator Edward Markey sent Meta a letter asking how a facial-recognition feature would address consent, bystander notice, biometric-data retention, deletion controls and the information shown to users. The letter records questions for the company; it is not proof of a launched product or a settled privacy policy. Read the senator’s letter.
What bystanders and glasses owners can do
If you are a bystander
- Assume that camera-equipped wearables may be recording in public. A visible recording indicator can be a clue, but it is not a complete guarantee that no capture is happening.
- In a personal interaction, ask the wearer to stop recording if you are uncomfortable. Avoid sharing sensitive information near an unknown camera-equipped device.
- Review the visibility of your social profiles and remove unnecessary public images or location details. This can reduce exposure, but it cannot ensure that copied, reposted, archived or brokered material has disappeared.
- Where available, request removal of exposed information from data-broker or people-search sites. Venue policies can also restrict recording or facial-recognition use.
- If recording is connected to stalking, threats or harassment, consider reporting it to the relevant platform, venue or law-enforcement agency. Do not confront someone if doing so could put you at risk.
If you own smart glasses
- Disable livestreaming and sharing you do not need, and review camera, microphone, location and cloud permissions in the current companion app.
- Keep the glasses’ software and paired phone’s operating system updated; secure the phone with a strong passcode.
- Use privacy-sensitive modes or power the glasses off in confidential settings. Avoid recording people without consent where local law or venue policy requires it.
- Do not install unofficial face-recognition or scraping tools. Delete recordings and cloud copies when no longer needed, while recognizing that deletion from one device may not remove copies already transmitted or shared.
Exact settings and labels vary by device edition and app version, so check the current product controls rather than relying on a menu path that may have changed.
Why the story matters
I-XRAY’s significance is the convergence it illustrated: discreet cameras, searchable images, data brokers and automated text processing can turn a short encounter into an identity-search attempt. The demonstration did not prove that every stranger can be identified instantly, and it did not establish a glasses hardware breach. It did show why accuracy, consent, data retention and limits on using facial recognition deserve attention as these components become easier to combine.
