Slate’s “$20,000” Electric Truck Has No Radio—But Its Current Price Is $24,950

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The vehicle behind the headline is Slate Auto’s two-door, rear-wheel-drive Slate Truck. Its April 2025 launch pitch targeted a price below $20,000 after potential federal incentives and deliberately omitted a conventional radio, speakers and touchscreen. As of August 18, 2026, the advertised Blank Slate starts at $24,950 before a $1,450 destination charge, taxes, fees and options. It remains a preproduction vehicle available by preorder, with deliveries targeted for late 2026.

What the Slate Truck actually is

Slate Auto, a Michigan startup, describes the Slate as a compact electric pickup sold directly to consumers rather than primarily through traditional dealerships. The base vehicle has two doors, rear-wheel drive and two seats. Optional modular hardware is intended to convert it into a five-seat SUV, so the platform can change roles instead of being replaced.

Slate says the truck will be designed, engineered and manufactured in the United States, but normal production and independently verified customer deliveries have not begun. Product details and pricing remain subject to change.

Slate’s overview of the vehicle and its current fleet page describe that platform strategy.

Does it really have no radio?

In the minimalist configuration, there is no conventional integrated radio or infotainment head unit, no large center touchscreen and no factory speaker system. That does not make the cabin incapable of playing audio. Slate’s current FAQ describes a phone-centered setup using a universal phone mount and USB power, with wireless connection to a portable Bluetooth speaker or an accessory audio system.

In practical terms, the owner supplies the phone, music or navigation app and, for the bare configuration, the speaker. It is “no built-in audio,” not “no way to hear music or directions.” This distinction matters because early launch coverage sometimes treated the design as if Bluetooth or all audio were absent. Slate’s current guidance supports phone-connected portable or accessory audio.

The approach removes the cost, weight and proprietary software of a built-in screen and stereo. It also leaves the owner with a speaker that may need charging, can be stolen and will not be integrated as cleanly with vehicle controls as factory equipment.

Why the original story said $20,000

Slate’s April 24, 2025 announcement used “under $20,000” as a target after potential federal incentives. It was not a guaranteed transaction price: the release excluded taxes and fees, and incentive eligibility depends on the vehicle, buyer, tax situation, law and timing.

Figure What it means
Under $20,000 Slate’s April 2025 target after potential incentives, not the current MSRP or an assured out-the-door price.
$24,950 Current advertised price for the Blank Slate before destination, taxes, government charges, documentation and optional equipment.
$1,450 Current destination charge listed by Slate.
$26,400 Base price plus destination only; taxes, title, registration, documentation and options still apply.

The headline therefore reflects a real 2025 launch claim, but calling the truck a current $20,000 vehicle is obsolete. Slate’s ordering page states the exclusions attached to today’s price.

What the Blank Slate includes—and leaves out

The base configuration is intentionally austere. Slate’s launch materials and current product descriptions point to:

  • A two-seat, two-door pickup body.
  • Rear-wheel drive.
  • Manual crank windows and a sparse interior with physical controls.
  • Basic steel wheels.
  • Molded plastic exterior panels rather than conventional painted bodywork.
  • A phone mount and USB power instead of an integrated digital dashboard.
  • No large touchscreen, integrated stereo or factory speakers in the bare configuration.

Slate has also described automatic emergency braking, forward-collision warning and up to eight airbags. Those are intended equipment claims, not an independent crash-test result or final safety rating. Buyers should wait for production specifications and official testing before treating them as verified performance.

Some launch reports mentioned a single gray exterior and no internet connectivity. Those details came from early material and should not be treated as immutable final-production specifications; Slate now emphasizes wraps and accessories for appearance and personalization.

  • A truck gift for kids – This set for pretend play makes a fun birthday, holiday or special occasion gift for boys, girls and kids who love garbage truck toys and vehicles

Projected range, charging and utility

Slate’s current material projects approximately 205 miles of range, compared with the 150-mile estimate in the 2025 launch announcement. The 205-mile figure is based on an approximation of the EPA test cycle, is not yet an official EPA rating and can change before production. Temperature, speed, payload, tires, accessories and battery choice will affect real-world results.

Item Current information
Vehicle Slate Truck, marketed in base form as Blank Slate
Body Two-door electric pickup; convertible to a five-seat SUV with kits
Drive Rear-wheel drive
Projected base range Approximately 205 miles; not EPA-rated
Original launch estimate 150 miles
Charging connector NACS
Battery The 2025 launch release listed a 52.7-kWh standard pack and an 84.3-kWh accessory pack; the current specification sheet does not establish a final production battery configuration.
Production status Preproduction
Base seating Two-seat pickup
SUV conversion Five-seat configurations through optional kits

A 205-mile headline range should not be read as a promise of 205 miles while hauling, towing, driving in winter or traveling at sustained highway speeds. Slate has not positioned this compact rear-drive truck as a substitute for a heavy-duty or half-ton pickup. Buyers who need frequent towing or heavy payload work will need confirmed payload, tow ratings, bed dimensions and loaded-range testing.

See Slate’s official specifications PDF for the current projections.

The modular strategy: buy a simple truck, add capability later

Slate’s larger idea is a configurable vehicle platform rather than a fixed trim ladder. An owner can begin with a simple pickup, then add SUV hardware, appearance wraps, wheels, utility equipment, audio, comfort features or a larger battery when needed. Slate says it offers more than 200 accessories and has received more than 180,000 reservations; those figures are company-reported.

The SUV conversion is the most consequential option. A buyer who needs five seats from the first day is not comparing the base pickup alone; the relevant calculation includes the conversion parts and any installation charge. Wraps can change the exterior without a conventional paint finish, while Slate promotes DIY instructions and service support for personalization and maintenance.

Why modularity can help

  • Lower entry cost for an owner who genuinely wants a simple two-seat commuter pickup.
  • Ability to change body style instead of replacing the vehicle.
  • Aftermarket-like personalization through a single accessory ecosystem.
  • Less dependence on a large proprietary touchscreen and software system.

Where the strategy can disappoint

  • Adding ordinary expectations—audio, extra seats, appearance upgrades, utility gear or more range—raises the final bill.
  • DIY installation transfers time, tools and responsibility to the owner.
  • Accessory availability, prices and installation procedures are not all finalized publicly.
  • A portable speaker is less integrated and less theft-resistant than factory audio.

What ordering means in 2026

  1. Place a preorder through Slate’s direct-to-consumer process.
  2. Pay a $300 non-refundable deposit, or $250 for certain holders of the earlier $50 reservation. The deposit is credited toward the eventual purchase price.
  3. Select final accessories and configuration closer to purchase; Slate says options and specifications may change.
  4. Wait for the company’s targeted late-2026 buying and delivery window.

A preorder is not a completed purchase, a guarantee of a delivery date or evidence that a production truck has passed independent safety testing. Slate’s buying page contains the current deposit and delivery terms.

Who could find it compelling?

  • Minimalist commuter: Someone who values a small, simple vehicle, has reliable charging and is comfortable using a phone and portable speaker.
  • DIY enthusiast: An owner who enjoys installing accessories and changing between pickup and SUV roles.
  • Local utility user: Someone hauling light loads locally rather than towing or covering long highway distances.
  • Small-business operator: A buyer who can use the open bed and add only the equipment the job requires.

Who should probably wait or choose something else?

  • Long-distance or rural driver: The projected, non-EPA range leaves uncertainty for cold weather, high speeds and loaded trips.
  • Heavy-duty truck buyer: Four-wheel drive, towing, payload and loaded-range capability are not established as a replacement for a full-size work truck.
  • Family buyer: The base vehicle has two seats; five-seat SUV use requires additional hardware and cost.
  • Convenience-first buyer: There is no built-in infotainment, conventional stereo or factory-painted body in the minimalist setup.
  • Immediate buyer: Deliveries are targeted for late 2026, not available as ordinary inventory today.
  • Risk-averse buyer: Final EPA range, crash-test results, production reliability and complete accessory pricing are still pending.

How to judge whether it is a bargain

Start with the configuration you would actually live with, not the stripped base vehicle in the headline. Add the SUV kit if you need rear seats, audio if you do not want a portable speaker, appearance and comfort equipment, any larger battery or range option, installation, destination, taxes, registration, documentation and charging costs. Then compare that total with a used Chevrolet Bolt or similar EV, used compact pickups, small gas crossovers and new entry-level EVs that include normal infotainment and five seats.

The Slate’s value proposition is strongest for buyers who truly want the minimalist configuration. It weakens as the vehicle accumulates features that conventional cars include as standard.

Bottom line

The Slate Truck really was announced as an unusually bare-bones electric pickup with no conventional radio, speakers or touchscreen. That design remains broadly true for the minimalist configuration, although owners can use phone-connected portable or accessory audio. The more important 2026 correction is price: the Blank Slate is currently advertised at $24,950, plus a $1,450 destination charge and all taxes, fees and options—not $20,000.

Slate’s modular pickup-to-SUV concept is distinctive, but the truck is still preproduction. Treat the 205-mile range, late-2026 deliveries, safety equipment and accessory ecosystem as projections or company claims until final ratings, production vehicles and customer deliveries provide independent confirmation.
