If Slack is stuck on “Processing,” first check whether the file actually uploaded: look for its message card or find it under Files & links. A missing preview is not always a failed upload. If the file is still in the composer, test a small JPG or PDF in another conversation, then try Slack in a private browser window or a different client. Those quick checks help isolate whether the cause is the file, conversation permissions, your device or network, or Slack itself.
What “Processing” means—and how to tell if the upload failed
Slack’s processing indicator does not identify one specific error. The file may still be transferring, undergoing security checks, waiting for a preview, or blocked by a conversation policy or connection problem. In some cases, the message is sent and the file is available even though its inline preview has not appeared.
Check the conversation for a file card, filename, or download control. You can also look in the conversation’s Files & links tab, or browse files from Slack’s desktop Files area. If the file is listed or can be downloaded, the transfer may have succeeded and only the preview is missing. If it remains in the message composer and the message cannot be sent, the upload has not completed.

Try these checks first
- Wait briefly once. A large video, presentation, or archive can take longer, especially on an unstable connection.
- Cancel or remove the stuck attachment if Slack offers that control, then retry it once.
- Test with one small file. Use a harmless JPG or PDF, rather than uploading a batch.
- Try another conversation. Test in a normal internal channel or DM, if appropriate and permitted.
- Switch access methods. If Slack in your browser fails, try the desktop app; if the app fails, try the browser.
- Use a private or incognito browser window. If the test upload works there, an extension or browser setting may be interfering.
- Restart Slack or clear its cache using the steps below.
Slack documents a maximum size of 1 GB per file and allows up to 10 files to be dragged into a desktop message field at once. The maximum is not a guarantee that a file near that size will upload reliably; a large transfer is more vulnerable to a weak connection. See Slack’s file-upload instructions.
Check the file, not just its spinner
Size, name, and number of files
If the original file is large, try a smaller copy or upload one file at a time. If you are uploading multiple files, retry with just the one that is stuck. You can also rename the file with a simple name made of letters, numbers, hyphens, or underscores. These are diagnostic steps, not ways to bypass a security restriction.
A preview can fail even when the file is available
Slack’s documented preview limits help explain why a file may not display inline. An image preview appears only if the image is smaller than 25,000 pixels on its longest side and below 45 million pixels total. Microsoft Office files larger than 50 MB do not display a preview. If the message contains a file card or the file appears in the Files area, try opening or downloading it rather than assuming the upload failed. Security scanning and file types
Slack says it scans uploads for viruses and other malware, and will not upload files it detects as malicious. If you suspect a false detection, test with a harmless file and obtain a clean copy from the original source; contact Slack support if a clean file is still blocked. Do not disable antivirus protection or rename an extension to disguise a file. Renaming or compressing a genuinely infected file is not a safe fix.

File restrictions can also depend on the conversation. Slack Connect has a restricted-file-type list that includes formats such as some executables, installers, scripts, disk images, and archives—for example, listed types include .exe, .dll, .msi, .dmg, .iso, .js, .ps1, .sh, and certain .tar and .zip-related formats. Do not assume this list applies identically to every internal Slack conversation; check Slack’s Slack Connect restrictions for the applicable list.
Is the problem limited to one conversation?
If a small test file works elsewhere but not in one channel or DM, the issue may be a conversation or workspace rule rather than the client. This is especially likely in Slack Connect conversations with another organization. Uploads may be disabled, a file type may be restricted, or an administrator may have limited uploads for that external organization. Posting restrictions or channel membership can also affect whether you can send a message.
Ask a workspace owner or administrator to check the relevant permissions. Slack documents this desktop path for paid plans: Admin → Workspace settings → Permissions → File uploads for Slack Connect → Expand. Owners can enable or disable uploads; Enterprise administrators can also manage permissions by external organization. Details are in Slack’s Slack Connect file-upload settings guide.

If only you are affected, also check your channel membership and try another client. An admin or app developer may see more specific policy errors, but ordinary users may only see a generic processing state.

Fix browser, app, and network interference
Browser test
- Open Slack in a private or incognito window and try a small test file.
- If that works, disable browser extensions in your regular window one at a time and retry.
- Clear the browser cache, then test again. If needed, try another supported browser or the desktop app.

Desktop app cache reset
In the Slack desktop app, open Help → Troubleshooting → Clear Cache and Restart. The app will restart; test the upload again afterward. This is a troubleshooting step, not a guaranteed fix.
Network test
Unstable Wi-Fi, a VPN, proxy, firewall, antivirus inspection, or organization content filter can interrupt Slack connections or file transfers. If company policy allows, try another network, such as a phone hotspot, or temporarily test without a VPN. Do not bypass workplace security rules; ask IT for help if a network change is not permitted.

Slack’s connection guidance also recommends its connection test. For IT teams, Slack names wss-primary.slack.com, wss-backup.slack.com, and wss-mobile.slack.com for WebSocket troubleshooting. These are administrator-level checks, not settings most users should change themselves.

Update Slack and your browser
An outdated app, browser, or operating system can cause compatibility problems. Update Slack and use a browser and operating system that Slack currently supports. Slack says its support requirements are updated every six months, in May and November, so check the support lifecycle page for current cutoffs rather than relying on an old version list. That page was last checked for this article on August 18, 2026; its version details can change.

Check Slack Status if uploads fail across multiple files, conversations, devices, or networks—especially if messages are also delayed or Slack is having loading problems. A listed incident is service-side, so clearing your cache or changing file names will not repair it locally. This article does not assert that Slack is currently experiencing an incident; check the status page for live information.
Mobile-specific checks
- Try Wi-Fi and cellular data, if available and allowed.
- Confirm Slack has permission to access the relevant photos or files.
- Keep Slack open while the upload completes.
- Make sure the file is actually stored on the device; a cloud-provider placeholder may need to be downloaded first.
- Update the Slack mobile app and your operating system, or try the desktop app for a large or unusual file.
On mobile, open a channel or DM, tap the plus icon, choose a recent image, View library, Recent files, or Upload file, then tap the paper-plane icon to send. Menu labels can vary by device and app version. Desktop cache-clearing instructions do not apply to the mobile app.

If the file is urgent
Use an organization-approved storage service and share a controlled-access link in Slack, or send a smaller, sanitized copy. Exporting a document to PDF may help when the original format is the obstacle, though it will not solve a network or permission failure. Confirm that the recipient can access the channel or link. A link avoids Slack’s attachment transfer path, but it introduces separate access-control and data-governance considerations. Do not move confidential work files to an unapproved consumer transfer site just to work around a stuck upload.

What to send an administrator or Slack support
Provide the workspace URL; the exact time and date of the failure, including time zone; file size and extension; client (desktop, browser, or mobile), app/browser version, and operating system; whether other files, conversations, clients, or networks work; and the exact error or a screenshot. Do not share sensitive file contents unless support specifically needs them and your organization permits it.
If Slack asks for desktop network logs, open Help → Troubleshooting → Restart and Collect Net Logs, reproduce the problem, return to the logging window, select Stop Logging, and attach the ZIP from Downloads to your support request. Slack also documents a Chrome network-log workflow at chrome://net-export/. Network logs can contain sensitive technical information, so share them only through the appropriate support channel.
For developers: API uploads are a separate issue
If an integration—not the Slack message composer—is stuck uploading, do not apply the user-interface steps blindly. Slack says newly created applications can no longer use the retired files.upload method and should use files.getUploadURLExternal followed by files.completeUploadExternal.
